It's a little late Christmas when you get to find some old teeth that need to be extracted. This came out of an old 26-year-old Mare, she had quite the bad smell coming out of her mouth.

As most of you know I don't float like the everyday Equine Dentist. Because of that I pay attention to everything the smell of a horse's mouth the fill of it and what their saliva looks like, how they handle a speck and pressure of the float
The coolest thing that just happened has to do with their saliva. Old horses have a thicker saliva that sticks to your hands and is stringy. This is due to them producing more saliva to break food down. I have come across horses that are younger that have the same thing going on. I started paying more attention to this and started wondering if these horses may have ulcers? So I started mentioning it to my clients that have younger horses with thick saliva they may wan't to keep an eye on it or visit with their vet. I had a client get their horse scoped and it did have ulcers. Something so simple may be a clue to get a horse the help it needs.

Barns are made to make memories.
To day I had two young girls visiting with me why I worked on there filly. We extracted some very large wolf teeth, witch mean the girls got to go home with some treasures to boot. I got the opportunity to explain how there horses teeth work. I have been work more and more out of my barn. It makes it easier to accommodate people's schedules. My more open schedule gave these two young ladys the ability to learn about there horses mouth. I all so hope the barn gives some other people or cute little girls some memories to keep as well.

The surface of the chewing teeth is naturally textured with enamel folds necessary for grinding forage to a pulp to start the digestive process.

-Over abraded/over floated teeth are smooth.
-Can cause chewing disability.
-Have little to no texture to grind up food.
-Rounded edges that flatten the molar table angles.
-Little to no molar occlusion without incisor reduction.
-Are at risk of sensitivity, decay, and fracture.
-Disrupts the first step of digestion.

Good morning everyone! While we are not an equine hospital, this case is just too wild not to share. 🤯

This particular patient was the Idaho Equine Hospital's Case of the Day!

A 2 year old Quarter Horse gelding came in for an exam as the owner noticed a firm swelling on the lower jaw. The gelding was having no problems eating and no signs of pain to the touch. An exam showed no drainage with a normal oral exam. Radiographs then revealed what looked to be numerous disorganized tooth roots….

Next step surgery: Under general anesthesia the bone on the lower jaw was removed to expose a large cavity with numerous (𝟐𝟖𝟖 to be exact) unattached tooth roots. Most of these were able to be removed by flushing the cavity with saline, though some required the use of instruments to remove from the surrounding bone. No involvement of the oral cavity was noted. The cavity was left open to heal on its own with daily flushing. The horse was rechecked several weeks later and the area was healing well. He was expected to have a full recovery.

The diagnosis was a 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐝𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐚, 𝐚 𝐛𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐭𝐮𝐦𝐨𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐧 that is rare but can occur in young horses.

TWO HUNDRED & EIGHTY-EIGHT TEETH were removed from ONE HORSE! 😳That has to be a record.
