Recently ive been asked about sweat marks and how they relate to saddle fit? There's alot of opinions out there on what they mean or how to read them. The problem is there are several variables that come into play when evaluating saddle fit in this way. So to keep this narrative simple what you can take away from the sweat pattern is, if the mark is not symmetrical on both sides of your horse back then the fit of your saddle needs to be checked. Your riding position balance and symmetry also may need to be checked as well. When it comes down to the question of Does this saddle fit? First the saddle needs to be evluated on the crossties girthed up for a baseline fit and second evaluation comes by watching the rider riding the horse and putting the horse through their paces. One would look for the horse's freedom of movement and comfort, as well as, the riders supported balanced position. And yes, the sweat pattern can be looked at as a reference for symmetry but it's only part of the picture.
