Coturnix eating cucumber
Watermelon, cucumbers, kale and romaine are some of my quails' favorite treats. Dried worms are their utmost favorite. When they see any of these treats coming, they gather at the door. Sometimes they jump out the door, and onto the treat. They're enjoying some locally grown cucumber here. A little leery of the phone, but that doesn't stop them. :)
It's been such a warm day that I took the entrance reducers out of the hives. The girls have been using the warmth, sunshine and open entrances to clean out debris and dead bees, and to take much-needed cleansing flights. I see orientation flights too. So far this fall, there have been no robbing frenzies, but I've found a very few yellow jacket carcasses in front of a couple of the hives. It warms my heart - ha! The bees have done a great job of keeping them out.
One of "the" girls, busy at the rosebush today. In years past, I'd mainly see bumbles on the roses, but the honey bees are doing fine with it this year.
Third day after package installs. So far, so good. The queens were released, and comb is being built. The bees are taking sugar syrup from baggie feeders. So far, these Saskatraz are very gentle. They are a pretty bee. We'll see how the year goes. I turned a couple of empty so-so boxes into a bait hive, which is set up in an area where there is at least a chance that scout bees will notice it. If that ever comes of anything, I'll just put the top box, top bars, bees and all onto a waiting floor. Again, we'll see.
