Please, please, please STOP pulling your dog when you’re out for a walk. Dogs primary sense is smell, so let them smell. I like to call it a “Sniffari” and it will tire your dog due to the mental stimulation, far more than walking or running 5 miles. When you “walk your dog,” it’s for them, not you.
I see this happening far too often, we “walk” our dogs from point A to point B and back to Point A and I see the dogs stop to sniff a spot, and the human, in a hurry or just created by our own habits, pull the dog away from a spot that the dog is still trying to smell and process those scents. We’re neglecting our dogs perspective and mental stimulation when we do this. Dogs (well.. most of them) are built to walk/run miles and miles, we’re not giving them the exercise we think when we’re constantly moving and covering all the ground in our neighborhoods. That’s the human perspective and not the dog’s perspective.

That said, of course there are standard deviations to everything under the sun, but in almost all cases, dogs who constantly move forward (from point A to B, do so out of habitualization (the habits we created) and not out of its own self interests.

I can’t emphasize this enough! One thing I’ve noticed is many of us seem to think our dogs are like robots, that their training session are more like software you upload to a computer then it just automatically generates that action/behavior, when it couldn’t be more different. Similar to our own diet and exercise routine, YOU have to put in the time, the work, and the consistency.

With the summer time heat setting in it’s important to be aware of how important it is to let your dog sniff its environment. A slow walk around the block sniffing everything is more stimulating to your pup than a 5 mile run. Love your pups and be safe 🐶❤️

Did you know…

“dogs have learned the best way to get what they want and need – to feel safe, to be fed, and to have shelter. The trade-off is that they are dependent on people. One increasingly popular line of thinking with cognition experts as it’s a two-way arrangement: dogs are using people just as much as the other way around.”

Do you know what it’s like to live and experience life as a dog? They have a completely different sensory system than we do and even while they experience things with us they are experiencing it completely differently.

“One barrier to gaining insight into what it might be like to be a dog is the way in which humans define intelligence. This question was addressed by a famous biologist Franz De Waal in his theory of “the biological latter,” A hierarchy of classification that places humans at the top (i.e., the most intelligent) and other creatures below them. In this hierarchy, intelligence is gauge has the ability to revise and execute solutions to problems, and then to analyze the results. Increasingly, though, cognition studies across a whole range of species have presented a much more complicated picture – less of a ladder and more of a dense, not a network of abilities, which are defined by needs, expectations, and motivation.”

It is important to consider our own socialization and hence perception when training and building a bond with our dog and recognizing that they are experiencing it completely differently than we are and it’s wise to be aware of this when socializing and training our furbabies.

It would be great to snap our fingers, or send our dog off for a week to board and train and have them come back and be all set for the rest of their life but the fact of the matter is, just like our own learning & health/ exercise journey, we have to be consistent, create habits and practice those behaviors daily in order to reinforce those behaviors and make them stronger in our own daily lives to reap the benefits of those actions, as is the same with your dog.

In dog training, similar to those first few months of human weight loss that may seem monotonous with very little results, if you stick to it, persistent through all the challenges and difficulties, you will be greatly rewarded for all your efforts, ultimately resulting in well behaved, happy dog 🐶❤️

Repetition is an extremely valuable commodity in dog training.

Similar to human socialization, the habits of today become the behavior of tomorrow. It’s especially important in dog training as this helps your dog to understand exactly what they’re supposed to do in social situations and in the case of crossing the street (off leash) life, injury, or death. Wether she’s on or off leash, we use the same language (aka: cues) in every situation, every time.

The language we use are just sounds that are associated with a reward or a punishment and the repetition of those cause and effect experiences confirms & reinforces those behavior patterns. Like the sound of a bag of treats opening is pretty much a universal “all domesticated dogs know” sound of treats and come running to attention.

It may feel redundant, but it’s arguably the most important factor in dog training; keep repeating the same words (cues) for every activity and while every dog is different, you will see the benefits of your time and effort 🐶❤️

Meet Mowgli 🐶❤️

These terriers have gotten such a bad wrap and that stereotype couldn’t be more inaccurate as it is with Mowgli. He’s such a lover but he needed some obedience training as this family has a new addition to the family any day now. You can have the best or worst trainer come into your home and train your dog, or you can send your dog away to a board and train facility but the responsibility will always fall back on the owners to be consistent and habitualize the behaviors you want your dog to exhibit. After working with Mowgli & his parents for a week I was very proud to see him looking for direction and following the cues his dad gives him. It makes me very happy to help create such a great bond between human and dog and to give them both the tools to be successful in that relationship

Meet Regan 🐶❤️

She is a 5 month old Golden Retriever and a super smart cookie! While all breeds have their breed standards they are still all individuals, and Regan is a little rockstar! Prior to our week of training she knew “sit” and “spin,” but she quickly picked up all the cues I taught her and would be a prime candidate for service dog training. I give her more credit than I give myself for her ability to quickly pick up what we worked on. Her parents encountered me and my dog who I walk off leash pretty much everywhere and they wanted to have a dog that could do the same, I’m positive they have the perfect pup to achieve that goal!

Meet Luna 🐶❤️

Luna is a rescue who came from unknown environments. She was skittish and knew zero obedience cues. She was terrified of her crate and had separation anxiety, her owners had lots of trouble getting her to go in her crate and said they often had to pick her up and physically put her in there. She has made tremendous improvements after only one week of training, she shows a much more comfortable behavior with her crate and goes inside on cue. Now she and her favorite humans have a much better relationship because she is such a rockstar. Maintenance is very important and life long but Luna was eager to work for her rewards and is a very smart and incredibly sweet dog.

Frenchies are a difficult breed to train. They don’t really have a “job” as they’re breed to look cute and due to being brachycephalic and short statured they don’t require much exercise. They are very smart but can be stubborn. If not mentally stimulated and not properly socialized there can be many behavioral issues. Of course these “problems” are only problems in the human world and not in the dogs world so acceptable behavior varies in different homes. Gus was the boss of the house and the yard and had almost zero cues to follow in his repertoire other than “sit.” After 4 hours in one week Gus has added watch me, down, come, stay, and wait. Learning is a life long process in humans as is with dogs and continued exercises by all dog owners, regardless of breed, will produced great results and a better relationship between you and your dog.
