We have some work to do and some muscle to build but could not be more happy with her ground manners and how sensible this horse is.
2nd time on the lunge line since January 😊

Peach is ready for spring!
We worked her slightly today just to see where she was at on the lunge line and safe to say we are both coming out of winter a little out of shape and rusty 😂

Unfortunately we have made the difficult decision to take a break from pulling horses for at least the next 2 months. We had an auction trip planned for April but with the outbreak of EHV-1 we believe the safest thing we can do for the horse community is not move horses across state lines that are in compromised conditions. We will be following the advice from our vet and keep an eye on the numbers. We are hopeful to plan a summer trip once things calm down.
Until then we will be focusing on getting Peach in tip top condition ❤️

I am really hoping within 2 weeks we can get riding.
She is always looking for her people and always wants to be glued to your side.

We received Journey from Stanley’s
These are the conditions these animals are subjected too and this is how they arrive to us. It is devastating to see any animal like this.

Animals’ Angels recently conducted an extensive months-long undercover investigation into the Kalona Auction in Iowa, exposing the terrible treatment and conditions inflicted on the horses trusted to the auction’s care.

The auction caters to many of North America’s most notorious kill buyers, including Boots Stanley, Bouvry Exports, Scott Kurtenbach, George Baker and Keith Tongen. Each auction sells between 300 to 500 horses, with Stanley and Bouvry Exports buying the bulk of the slaughter horses.

Peach & her little friend Buttercup!
Peach is done with quarantine and she had a visit from our farrier this week. This weather is still killing us for ride time. We have just been able to walk around on her but she is more than happy to do that. She has been doing her carrot stretches to encourage her to bend and flex along with getting introduced to all of the neighborhood kids that go sledding past her paddock while she happily watches them fly by. So far we have not seen one spook out of this horse. Overall all good updates for Peach!

All dressed up with nowhere to go!
Unfortunately our barn is currently like an ice castle.
We don’t have to many places to ride right now. But there was a small portion of her paddock that was ice free! So we took a stroll around with her little friend Buttercup and she did great! We had the chestnut mare ears going 🤷🏼‍♀️ butttt she was super happy to be moving. She moved great off of my seat and was super in tune to what I was asking of her.
Cannot wait to get her into the arena and see what she can really do. I think she might be quite the fancy lady

Peach update
She had her vaccines and was seen by our vet who said she looks great! We need to keep an eye on her cuts and clean them daily. She will remain in quarantine the next 30 days just to be safe. She did unfortunately bring back some little friends with her (lice) so if you see her covered in powder that is why. We were also able to track down her brand the “flying b” she is out of Bartlett’s Ranch so we think Miss Peach may be quite the fancy lady who just lost her way. We are so so excited for her.

“574” now known as Peach is getting settled in. It was a long ride for all of us but she did great. At the auction she was kept in a small pen with 5 other horses. One of those horses was really going after her unfortunately she does have some bumps and cuts that our vet will be looking at shortly. She had her saddle on for over 8 hours and it was done up way to tight she is pretty swollen and sensitive around her girth area. She is munching on hay and relaxing until our vet gets here for a full exam. So far she is extremely cuddly and friendly she loves being brushed and loves to be very close with you.
Welcome Peach ❤️

Introducing hip # 574
This mare is the sweetest thing we have ever seen. While the bigger horses were all over the place she just stood in the corner and kept to herself. She’s a little dehydrated and got pretty banged up she has a few scrapes and cuts our vet will be looking at in the morning. We gave her electrolytes and did what we could for her wounds. We are headed back now and are so happy we could get her out of the slaughter pipeline ❤️

End of year recap
We started ABC in October 2020 in 3 short months we were able to save 2 horses Chance and Journey from the slaughter pipeline. Both of these horses taught us so much. Chance taught us the psychological aspect of what these horses go through and how traumatizing it can be coming out of the pens while Journey showed us the medical side of what these horses bodies go through. These two will always hold a special place in our hearts. We are so happy that we could help them find their way to their new lives.
We will be starting 2021 off New Year’s Day at auction with the goal of bringing one horse back. Thank you so much for everyone’s support with our new adventure we are so excited to see what 2021 will bring and how many of these guys we can get out of the slaughter pipeline 🖤

“The inside of a slaughter truck. When horses enter this they are forever lost. They do not deserve the misery that overwhelms this space. Life ends for many of them as soon as they enter this metallic moving box. Cold, sharp and frightening. Many horses at livestock auctions across the country are sold only to be forced upon this moving coffin. “

Journey girl is all set at her new house ❤️
This is her new friend Ember who is also a southern kill pen rescue. She has acres and acres of green paddocks to run in. Some of her new friends include pigs, turkeys, cows, ducks and just about every other farm animal imaginable. Her new owner is absolutely perfect for her we could not have picked her a better match. As heartbroken as I am to let her go I could not be more excited for Journey🥰

We received the most wonderful news today!!
Journey has found her furever home! She will shortly be leaving to a beautiful farm in Connecticut . This farm has extensive history in training and working with horses from kill pens. We could not have found a better match for her. We are so excited for our pretty girl. She has sure taken all of us on a journey and we are so excited we were able to help her continue hers 🖤

“Dangerous, aggressive, unpredictable, lost cause, wild, will put you in the hospital, untrustworthy, hopeless.”
This is how Journey was described to us.
Journey is not any of those things.
Journey loves kids, is eager to learn and please, forgiving of humans, trusting, smart, a mare 🤷🏼‍♀️, she loves being brushed and loved on, she really likes to work. Journey is a good horse that people let down. Uneducated owners make uneducated horses and those horses are the ones that end up in situations like Journeys.

We found one of Journey’s previous owners!!
Exciting news today we tracked down one of Journeys owners and grabbed a ton of info on her!
She is a 7 year old TWH/quarter cross started under western pleasure.
This woman rescued Journey at a year old she had been kept in a 6x6 stall and was never allowed around other horses she was extremely abused and neglected as a baby. After rescuing her they halter broke her and got her health back in order and sent her for some training after that she was bounced around to a few homes before landing in the kill pen.
We are so happy we were able to track this woman down and for all the info she has given us. We are so thankful to know that our Journey girl has at least experienced love and good care once before💕💕💕

Journey update!
Little lady is feeling good! We are in the final couple weeks of quarantine. Safe to say she has made a 100% recovery.
She is filling out nicely... maybe a little tooooooo nicely 🧐 Our vet will be coming out to check on her very soon along with our farrier. We are anxious to begin all of her ground work and see what she knows. She is talking up a storm with the other horses and seems to really be interested in watching our lesson kids. We are hopeful to be welcoming visitors to meet and greet with her in the upcoming weeks.

This picture might just look like a horse in a blanket to most of you but when we see this picture we see a terrified horse that is learning to trust humans again.
During our first few days with Journey we could not go near this girl with a blanket as soon as she saw it she would take off. Today in the dark with flashlights and moving shadows and scary noises in the trees this girl stood like a champ and let us toss the blanket right over her. We still aren’t a fan of any heavy blankets YET but we are so incredibly proud of this little girl for trusting us enough to get this fleece over her. Sometimes the smallest victories are the most encouraging ❤️

Take a look at Journeys first day compared to her now. This is what 20 days of time, love and around the clock health care can do.
Holidays are fast approaching check out ABC’s wishlist. These are our most commonly used items to make these transformations happen. Our Journey girl still has a long road ahead of her but every day she is getting stronger and healthier. Please consider sending Journey a gift or help us stock up for the next horses we will be pulling come spring 💕

A Slaughter Pipeline Survivor Story ~ Journey

This used to be me, I was scared, weak, shaking and I was beat up and thrown away like garbage. I was used to have babies for years and then they were done with me. I was destined to be just a number on a USDA Slaughter export report. As I stood in the auction yard I dreamed of better days, days that were behind me, days I figured I would never see again. I was sick, with a runny nose and bad cough. “Who would want a sick, skinny bedraggled mare?

I wished there were people out there who cared. What I didn’t know is that I was purchased by people that really do care. I was purchased by ABC Second Chance Horses. They paid that price for my life. They told me that everything was about to change and I would be okay.

That was less than 2 weeks ago, and all I can say is that my life has changed. I’m living the better days again. I don’t have my health a hundred percent back yet, but I’m fighting hard to get completely healthy. I still have a runny nose and I have around the clock care. My spirits are back. I am a proud regal horse once again.

I’m still in quarantine to make sure I’m 100% back to good health before playing any horse games with my new pasture friends. I have had many visitors and know once I am back to full health I will enjoy all your living touches.

If it wasn’t for people like you I could have been just another number on the USDA slaughter export report.

It is because of people like you that my life was saved, people like you who donated so I could be rescued are the true heroes.

I ask of you that you will consider giving to help save other horses just like me. The people at ABC Second Chance Horses are always ready to save another horse just like me. They are in communication with the kill pens throughout the USA constantly.

Journey, a slaughter pipeline survivor.

Well Journey has definitely taken us on a Journey this week! For anyone that saw her this week knows she was looking pretty rough. We are excited to announce that she is finally starting to feel WAY better. She has had around the clock care (shout-out ) and is making a full recovery. She was pretty dehydrated and under the weather when she got off of her 48 hour trailer ride here. With the help of electrolytes and probiotics she is making leaps and bounds of progress.
Journey will remain in quarantine until further notice please do not approach her paddock. Thank you!!🖤
