Did you know peanuts are not for birds?
Please do not feed your pet birds peanuts. Peanuts grow in the ground and can be subject to molds and fungus like Aflatoxin and Aspergillus which can make birds very sick or even die. Pet food and bird food products are regulated differently than many human grade products. Do not purchase seed mixes which contain peanuts. Though rare, we do see it and recommend peanut free diet for birds.

Today, as we honor the heroes of 9/11, we also recognize the tireless efforts of the rescue dogs who worked at Ground Zero, and the veterinarians and volunteers who cared for them.
These animals not only helped in search-and-rescue efforts but also brought comfort to first responders. Veterinarians and volunteers were a "godsend," providing crucial care to ensure the health and well-being of these brave dogs as they performed their heroic duties. Today, we remember and give thanks for their dedication.

9/11 rescue dogs' best friends were the people who kept dogs safe at Ground Zero .

Found a Lump on Your Pet? Here’s What You Need to Know!
Lumps can be alarming, but not all of them are dangerous. Whether it’s painful or not, it’s important to have it checked out by your veterinarian. While some lumps are harmless, others can be more serious! If you discover a lump on your pet that’s the size of a pea or larger, don’t delay—schedule a vet visit. A simple procedure called a fine needle aspiration and cytology can help determine if it’s something to be concerned about. Early detection is key to keeping your pet healthy, so don’t ignore those lumps—get them checked out, even if they aren’t painful!

Is Your Dog Limping? Time to Take Action!
When your dog is limping, it's a clear sign they’re in pain. One of the easiest ways to spot this is when your dog doesn’t put weight on one of its legs and stands like this (see the black arrow). Not putting pressure on the foot is a tell-tale sign that the leg hurts! If you notice your dog limping, don’t wait—have it checked out by your veterinarian. Your pup will likely need an exam, x-rays, and pain medicine to get started on the path to feeling better!

Don’t Ignore Dental Pain in Your Pets!
Just like us, our pets can suffer from tooth pain, and it can be incredibly debilitating for them. Unlike us, they can’t tell us when something hurts, so it's up to us to pay attention and keep their mouths healthy. Regular dental check-ups are essential! Dental issues like broken teeth, gum disease, and infections can lead to severe pain, difficulty eating, and even more serious health problems. Keeping an eye on your pet’s teeth and scheduling regular vet visits for dental exams can prevent pain and keep them happy and healthy. Remember, a healthy mouth means a happy pet!

Is Your Pet in Pain?
This week, I’ll be focusing on animal pain awareness. Our pets can't tell us when something's wrong, but they do show us through their behavior and appearance. It's important to be aware of the subtle signs of pain that might go unnoticed.
These photos show:
1. A bunny with a cast on his leg: Obvious signs like limping or avoiding movement are clear indicators of discomfort.
2. A geriatric thin dog: Weight loss in older pets can be a sign of underlying pain or illness.
3. A cat with a head tilt: Head tilts could indicate ear infections or neurological issues causing discomfort.
4. A quiet, sad-looking dog: A change in mood or energy levels might be a sign that something is wrong.
If you notice any of these signs in your pets, don't ignore them! Reach out to your vet to ensure they get the care they need. Early detection is key to keeping our beloved companions happy and healthy.

Some pets live long, extraordinary lives, and some even break records. Pumpkin was one of those special pets. She was a frequent flyer at Canobie Lake Veterinary Hospital in her final years, and it was always a joy to help her feel better. Pumpkin lived to the remarkable age of 20, passing just at the beginning of this year. She touched my heart deeply, always having something to tell me—and she always did! Miss you, Pumpkin! 🌈🐾
