Dressage friends, someone please help me understand this because this makes no sense at all. On the surface, this seems BS to me.

The United States was eliminated from Olympic dressage competition Tuesday when Marcus Orlob's mare, Jane, displayed blood on the right hind leg during the pairs first Olympic appearance.

The Holsteiner Verband is coming to Aiken!

Mark your calendars for 1 October 2024 at Full Gallop Farm in Aiken!

Each year the Holsteiner Verband conducts a mare and foal inspection at regional sites throughout North America and we are excited to report that in 2024 one of the sites will be right here in Aiken! The purpose of the inspection is to approve mare candidates for entry into the Holsteiner studbooks and to inspect and judge foals to give feedback to the breeder on the progress of their breeding program.

Mares are judged and receive a score on 7 traits: type, topline, front legs, back legs, walk, trot, and canter. Foals are judged and receive scores on 2 traits: conformation and movement. Horses are shown in hand on a triangle and also at liberty in an arena. Typically there are 2 judges from the Verband.

Eligible mares include any mare with existing papers from any European warmblood registry and mares with Jockey Club papers. Inspection, approval and entry into the Holsteiner studbooks is necessary for any foal from the mare to be registered as a Holsteiner, when sired by an approved Holsteiner stallion, and to receive the optional Holsteiner brand. Special cases do exist and if you are unsure as to whether your mare meets inspection requirements, please contact me or Marja-Liisa Solterbeck at [email protected]

The fee schedule for mares and foals is $171 for mares and $86 for foals. For more information on how to sign up and prepare for the inspection, please go here: https://www.holsteiner.com/approvals

Ample overnight stabling will be available on site. Please contact Full Gallop Farm at 803 215 6590 to make arrangements.

Thanks to Lara Anderson for her generosity in making her wonderful facility available for this event.

In the fall of each year, the Holsteiner Verband conducts an approvals tour at sites across the United States and Canada.  The approvals events are gatherings of  Holsteiner horses and studbook eligible Warmbloods and Thoroughbreds for evaluation by judges.  Successful evaluations will enable s...

Our Camiros x Ariadus Holsteiner mare, Waltz Across Texas, aka Electra on day 337, awaiting arrival of her Uriko c**t. This pic doesn’t do her justice, as she is glowing and deeply dappled and looking pretty sharp despite her 18 years. This foal is not spoken for.

This is our 2022 Holsteiner gelding, Lieutenant Dan, aka "LT". Pedigree is Larimar / Calido / Rocadero, stamm 5381. He is a full sibling to Nessa Cossentine Equestrian's L'Azzure and Lauren Elizabeth's Carolina and shares their good looks, correct conformation, beautiful movement, and great personality. He is one of the friendliest horses we have produced and seems to genuinely enjoy interacting with his human handlers. He has shown talent and courage in the jump chute and is well socialized with other horses. he is a purpose bred show jumper but he would also make a superb event horse. LT is available and we have quite a bit of video of him. Please message me or comment here for more information. Located near Aiken, SC. 18 carrots.

As spring has sprung and foaling season is upon us, I'm reminded of the special qualities the season brings to us who own mares about to offer up their "packages" of equine joy. I think it's common for anyone who owns a horse farm, but perhaps especially true for breeders, to ask the question, "why do i keep doing this?". Horses are expensive to create and maintain and they are a lot of work. A LOT of work! The answer to the question is this, at least for me: I just can't imagine a life without the joy and anticipation i get from breeding these amazing creatures. There is nothing more satisfying to me to see a perfect foal produced by my farm. To me, horses are more than an interest; they are a passion. Our first foal (Uriko x Camiros) is due 25 April. Let the good times roll.

That's all. Carry on.

I urgently need to go computer shopping today. If anyone is familiar with all-in-one type computers I would appreciate input. Also, I'm assuming Best Buy to be the best local source but if anyone knows of other sources with a good selection (not Walmart or Staples), please let me know. Lastly, for any military friends, does the PX at Ft Eisenhower / Jackson have a decent selection and is it worth the drive?

The 30 January meeting (on Zoom) of the Holsteiner Verband North American Breeding District was a great opportunity to hear from other members and to learn more about the state of the Holsteiner breed as well as laying out future plans. Marja-Liisa Solterbeck gave an excellent presentation on membership numbers (both horses and humans) as well as the results of the 2023 inspection tour. We learned that our membership is growing. Some of the highlights:

- We added 59 new members in 2023 and total membership is now 216.
- The number of regional inspection sites rose from 3 sites in 2022 to 7 sites in 2023.
- The number of horses inspected rose from 32 mares and 59 foals in 2022 to 61 mares and 97 foals in 2023.
- Foals by 49 different sires were inspected.
- Planning for the 2024 inspection tour is underway with further expansion of the number of sites, including one here in South Carolina!
Marja-Liisa was kind enough to share her presentation, which I don't seem to be able to attach here, so shoot me a message and I'll send it to you. There was another presentation on specifics on stallions and comparing Holsteiners to other breeds by Sebastian Rohde which i will ask for to post here.

The 2024 Holsteiner inspection tour is coming to Aiken County! Each year the Holsteiner Verband conducts breeding stock inspections at regional sites in North America. The Verband has agreed to include Aiken County as an inspection site for 2024. The exact date is TBD but typically is in late September or early October.

The purpose of the inspections is to examine and approve brood mares and stallions, and optionally at owner's discretion, foals. The Aiken site will be for mares and foals only. Eligibility for mares requires registration in an existing warmblood registry or Jockey Club (Yes, Thoroughbreds are welcome!). There are also minimum height requirements. If a mare is approved, her foals by a stallion approved by the Verband are eligible for Holsteiner registration papers and to receive the Holsteiner brand, which is optional.

I'm happy to be the site host here at Patriot Farm in Windsor, but we are just 11 acres, so space will be tight. If anyone with a larger farm is interested in being a site host please let me know. Minimum facility requirements are a fenced paddock (200 x 200) for observing mares and foals at liberty and at least some onsite stabling.

If we have enough participation in 2024 this will hopefully become an annual event here. The event will be open to the public and is a great opportunity to see some nice mares and foals, listen to the judges explain an objective appraisal of each horse, and learn more about this amazing breed called the Holsteiner.

There are typically 2 Verband judges and there may also be an American judge.

If you have questions about mare inspections or about possibly serving as site host, please let me know. You can also learn more at www. holsteiner-verband.de.

"This horse is the stuff of legends," could be legitimately said about Calido I. One of the most prolific sport horse sires in Holstein, Calido I has had a huge impact on our breeding program through his daughter, Adriana MMP. Adriana has been our flagship broodmare since I acquired her from Hans Harmsen as a three year old in 2011. Coincidentally, Hans Harmsen is also the breeder of Contefino, one of our favorite stallions, to whom Adriana is in foal for 2024. Adriana has produced a number of top notch sport horses, crossing her with 3 different stallions: Larimar (L'Azzure, O Carolina, Lieutenant Dan), Contefino (Gizelle, Lagertha/Gertie, Casofino, Clayton Kershaw), and Uriko (Union Jack). Her 2024 Contefino foal is sure to be another winner.

Update on our breeding program - foals coming in 2024! We have three mares in foal to outstanding stallions. They are:

Waltz Across Texas (Electra) (Camiros x Ariadus x Accord II, stamm 6660) is in foal to Uriko, due 25 April. This will be Electra's first foal for us and judging from the quality of this year's exceptional Uriko x Calido foal, Union Jack, this will be one to watch.

Adriana (Calido x Rocadero x Capitol II, stamm 5381) is in foal to Contefino. This is the 5th time we have crossed this wonderful mare to one of our favorite stallions and all 4 have been exceptionally athletic and rideable horses. We're looking forward to another superstar! Adriana is due 2 June.

Hollywood, SSH (Cancara x Cacique x Ariadus, stamm 6660) is in foal to Casquino. This is a reprise of last year's breeding, which produced our gorgeous filly, Romina Belle (Mia). If this foal follows suit, it will be gray, tall, athletic and have a great personality.

I'm happy to consider in utero purchases. Please contact me for more information.

We have had a run of very good looking foals the past several years but this Holsteiner c**t is at the top of the good looks list. Union Jack, born 1 June 2023 is by Uriko out of our Calido daughter and premium Holsteiner mare, Adriana. The full pedigree is here:…

Starting off the week on a very positive note: Our Camiros mare, Waltz Across Texas, aka Electra, just checked in foal to Uriko. I had tried unsuccessfully to breed her to Ibisco XX and had no joy, so we switched to Uriko and she took. This foal should be more of a jumper than eventer, but either way it's a good cross of a super stallion with a super mare!

The January 2023 issue of Pferd and Sport, https://www.holsteiner-verband.de/downloads/pferd-sport/PFERD-SPORT_Holsteiner_englisch_0123.pdfwhich is the Holsteiner Verband's monthly publication, had some interesting articles and other bits featuring some of the stallions available through the Verband's frozen semen program. Of note, Diarado was named the stallion of the month, and Million Dollar was the spotlighted stallion, with a very nice write-up about his burgeoning career as a showjumper. Also, a listing of stallions producing 10 or more foals, showed Chezarro and United Way listed in top ten; both of these young stallions will be available through the frozen program for the first time this year. We are awaiting shipment of this year's batch of frozen semen and expect it in late January - early February. For further information on the program or to request a contract, please contact Karen Reid at 253 208 4574 or Brian Jalbert at 805 423 1361 or by PM message here.

Coming soon to a Holsteiner frozen semen program near you….
Casall son, Chezarro, will be available to US breeders for the 2023 breeding season. His breeding fee will be $1800 and includes LFG. For more information, contact Karen Reid at 253 208-4574 or Brian Jalbert 805 423-1361. Notes below are from the Holsteiner Verband website.

About Chezarro
The stallion keeping GmbH deems Chezarro, a stallion licensed in 2018, to be such an interesting Casall son.
In his age group, the Caretino grandson was doubtless among those stallions with the most expressive type. Boasting a very well-constructed top line, he is also a particular attractive eye-catcher thanks to his dark coat and distinctive marking. His basic gaits are of extraordinary quality as the dark bay always displays an up-hill tendency with good rhythm and active hind legs.
Chezarro’s jumping is in accord with his breeding, as he is very careful and demonstrates great intelligence and extraordinary quality as well as most impressive ability.

Pedigree of Chezarro
Note: The Verband website shows Chezarro’s height as 172 CM.
https://www.horsetelex.com/horses/pedigree/1883297/chezarro
Sire
Upon the completion of Casall’s exemplary showing career in May 2017, the sole focus in evaluating this stallion has turned on his achievements at stud, in terms of results and evaluation of his young offspring at foal inspections, the two-year-old c**ts presented for stallion grading, his daughters presented for studbook registration and in particular his sport horse offspring. The number of successful offspring is increasing year upon year and the champion of the 2018 Neumünster stallion grading, Cadilo, is also by Casall. Due to his offspring’s worldwide achievements, Casall is listed on 3rd position on the WBFSH sire ranking already at the age of 19. Despite Casall and his offspring’s great impact, it is necessary and of great importance for the Verband stallion keeping to have interesting sons put to stud.

Damline
The pedigree offers a wealth of interesting information on Chezarro’s genetic background. His dam Siance is by Conteur, a stallion closely related to important sire Contendro I.
His second dam Ciance by Athlet Z introduces the highly successful international blood of the top showjumping sires Alme and Gotthard into the bloodline. His fourth dam, a full sister to exceptional stallion Lord, is of particular interest, as Fiance contributes plenty of first rate TB genes to Chezarro’s genetic make-up: the TB stallions Ladykiller and Cottage Son guarantee performance attitude and hardiness.

Own Performance of Chezarro
Chezarro completed 14-day-ability assessment with good marks, receiving 9.0 on willingness to perform and 8.5 on temperament/character, canter, rideability and jumping aptitude, resulting in a total mark of 8.45 (jumping weighted).
Chezarro completed sport testing at Münster-Handorf in 2020. With a weighted final mark of 9.11, he was given 9.0 or better on all assessment criteria. Five-year-old, Chezarro has improved considerably again, completing his sport test with a weighted final mark of 9.78! Canter 9.5, ability 9.80, technique 9.70, rideability 10.0 and overall impression 10.0.
His first showing season was highly successful with Maximilian Gräfe. His first starts saw him chalk up three wins and four top placings in young horse jumping classes up to L level.
Considerations for breeding
This Casall son is expected to pass on his type and movement to his offspring. The successful mare family 1298 is an excellent guarantee for this stallion’s performance potential.
