Post from Spirit Dog Training

Did you have a cup of coffee or tea this morning?
Did you call a friend to catch up?
Watch your favorite show on Netflix?
Take a painkiller when you had a headache?
Go to the gym?
Treat yourself after dinner?
You probably did multiple of these. You can take care of your own needs whenever you choose.
Your dog cannot.
Your dog cannot decide to meet their social needs. They cannot go outside and walk off their energy. They cannot grab a snack or a chew when they’re bored.
They cannot call a doctor when they don’t feel well. They cannot choose to go for a run, see their friends or go swim on their own.
Dogs are captive animals. They depend on us to meet EVERY need in their lives.
And what amazes me is how patient and hopeful they are about it.
They wait for us to take them on a walk. They wait for us to fill their bowl. They wait for us to give them play, comfort, and care.
Sometimes, we forget how extraordinary this relationship is. We forget the sheer weight and privilege of being someone’s entire world.
It's a huge, precious responsibility.
Their lives are so short. And in that short time, they rely on us for everything. And yet they do it SO joyfully, meeting us each day with hope, love, and excitement.
In return, they give us friendship, fun and endless happiness.
Take a moment to just appreciate how extraordinary that is.
So here’s my challenge to you: stop scrolling.
Close Facebook. Put your phone down.
And just take your dog for another walk (today, and every other single day.)
Don’t leave them crated for hours on end. Give them chances to run, sniff, chew, play, and just be your friend.
Because remember: they cannot do ANY of this on their own. Not one single thing. Every need they have depends on you.
Their whole precious life is in your hands.
It's your amazing privilege to make it the very best one.
With the most walks, games, adventures, playtimes and memories.
Don’t ever waste that chance to make it the most amazing life.

QUICK TIP: I've been posting this for the past 15 years, as many of you know, but I will keep positing it until it is common knowledge.

If the trainer you are considering using falls into any of these categories, you should pick another trainer.

• If the equipment recommended for basic obedience includes or is focused on choke collars, prong collars, or shock collars.

• Trainers who ban head collars of any kind may rely unduly on force.

• If the trainer instructs you to manage your dog’s behaviors by pinching toes, kneeing the dog in the chest or abdomen, hitting the dog, forcibly holding the dog down against their will, constantly yelling at the dog, frequently yanking the collar constantly, or using prong, choke, pinch or shock collars or electronic stimulation.

• If the trainer believes most or all training is about encouraging the person to be “alpha” and teaching the dog to “submit”.

• If the trainer explains that most dog behavior, for example jumping on people, occurs because the dog is trying to be “dominant”.

• If a trainer recommends “alpha rolls”, “scruffing”, “helicoptering”, “choking” or any other painful or physical methods as a means of “training” or modifying behavior.

Post from RM Drake

Your dog will always have a place in your heart. In your soul. We don’t celebrate this enough. We wait until the ground has swallowed them, until the house is too quiet, until the leash hangs on the hook like some cruel joke—then suddenly we remember how much they meant. But while they’re alive, we brush it off, too busy, too tired, caught up in all the noise we mistake for life.

The truth is, your dog has been teaching you all along. How to sit in the sun without guilt. How to be thrilled just to see the door open. How to forgive in seconds. How to love without a single word. And you miss it, because you think it’s simple. But simple is the hardest thing to see.

One day it hits you—the best soul you ever knew walked on four legs, and you can’t explain that to anyone who hasn’t lived it. They’ll nod, they’ll smile, but they won’t know. Only you will carry it. And it’ll hurt, God it’ll hurt, but it’ll also save you. Because in a world that wears you down and makes you question yourself, your dog saw you as enough. Always enough.

And maybe that’s the point. Not medals, not money, not applause. Just being somebody’s whole world for the short stretch of years you get together. We don’t celebrate this enough. But we should. Because in the end, it’s all that ever mattered.
