What do you do when it’s late at night and the dishes are all done? Make Rosemary Oil!
Fresh from the garden, rosemary is not only great for cooking but has an amazing smell that I personally never get tired of 🥰

Cayenne and red pepper flakes are a great addition to your chicken feed. They help with the weight of your egg yolk, fighting off bacteria infections and on top of that, help to keep rodents from stealing your feed! So check your spice racks and start mixing! 🍳 🥚

Ever wonder about those tiny red or brownish spots in your farm fresh eggs?
Nothing to worry about! They are safe to eat, although if if makes you more comfortable you can scrape it out before cooking 🍳
These spots are caused when small blood vessels in your hens ovaries rupture during the egg laying process.
Fun life hack when trying to get bits of shell or even the blood spot out of your egg, use the shell you just broke open to scoop hard to get bits out of your egg yolk. It cuts right through and you don’t have to worry about getting the mess all over your fingers from trying to fish it out 😁
Have an eggcellent day! 🥚 ☀️

Nothing like some farm fresh eggs in the morning to start your day out right!

It’s cucumber galore here at the homestead, time to grab a couple baskets and gather the rest!
Fun facts about cucumbers: they are great for hydration and full of vitamins you need to support your body such as vitamin C, K and most of your B vitamins! They also have potassium and magnesium which is mostly stored in the skin so if you like to peel your cucumbers, keep in mind your throwing out a lot of those goodies that help nourish your body. They contain antioxidants and on top of that, some people even use cucumbers on their skin to get that nice healthy glow 🥰
So why not add cucumbers into your daily routine and diet? Your body will thank you!

Our sweet Bee is the first to pick our first cherry tomato this year!

Exciting day for Suzanne’s babies today! They’ve officially moved outdoors into their tractor for the grow out phase!

We use a plucker to pluck the feathers off our meat chickens after they’ve taken the long black train, if you know what I mean ☠️
Here’s a little tutorial video of how we use it!

It’s time to process the meat chickens! How is your Sunday going??

A lot of people don’t realize that watermelon plants have both male and female parts. Who would have thought?!
Sometimes you have to help the males pollinate the females so you can get some good melons when the time is right 🍉 just pluck a flower from the plant that does not contain a melon on it, and use it to pollinate the female blooms with the melons.
Also the best way to keep your melons from breaking is use either a sock or some panty hose, wrap it around the watermelon when it starts to get heavy and tie it up like a hammock. You’ll have some nice healthy melons in no time! Happy harvest!

Last but not least, say hello to Alexander the Great! He is our breeding buck and fathers all the litters we have here on The Deatherage Hoppin Homestead. He is the most social and you can always find him begging for some ear scratchins. When he’s done getting the attention he craves, he’s begging for a different type of tasty treat, apples and clovers! Just be careful to avoid giving rabbits the apple seeds, which can actually contain a deadly toxin to rabbits. If your as high class as Alexander here, you prefer your apples skinned and cut into perfect bite size slices 🍎

Meet Freya! Our momma doe who had her second litter of 8 kits April 26th. She is an experienced mom who knows what she’s doing when it comes to caring for her babies. She’s definitely the sweetest of the does and never turns down a opportunity to snack 🐇

There are a few different types of chickens we raise around here but there are two specific breeds that play an important role when it comes to feeding the family.
First off, we have our meat chickens, also known as the Cornish cross breed. These chickens will literally eat themselves to death so you want to make sure you monitor their food and try to get them moving some for exercise.
And second, we have our black Australorp chickens which are our egg layers. These black beauties are very docile and produce more than enough eggs to feed our family of 5 and some!
If you are considering raising chickens in your future, I’ll let you in on a little secret…you can never have too many!!! 🐓

What is on the menu for tonight?
Sticky Rabbit! 🤤 we used two of our rabbits from our last harvest to make this delicious, tender treat. Just sauté some yellow onion and garlic, pour in some stock, and let it simmer! Then serve it up over some rice for the whole family to enjoy🍴

Meet Suzanne! She’s a first time mommy here and had a littler of 10 kits on April 24th! It is a little early to tell the s*x of her babies but if this one is a buck, I feel the need to name him Master Splinter! He is the smallest of the batch so he needs a little help supplement feeding but he’s doing great and catching up to his siblings quick 🥰

We’ve got a fresh batch of rabbit meat still resting. It usually take 24-48 hours for rigor mortis to pass. The larger the animal, the longer the rest. We rest our meat in a clean cooler of ice and water. This batch has been resting for 24 hours and still a little stiff so we are going to put another layer of ice and water over them to rest another day.
You can also dry rest in a large pan in the fridge however, it would be difficult unless you have a large extra fridge laying around you could use.

Our TANUK composite rabbits are bred not only for their meat, but their ability to better tolerate this Texas heat and are easier to handle with their gentle temperaments. These grow outs were sweet and loving, always wanting snuggles and of course, would do anything for some treats!

05/09/2022

It’s that time, when the weened kits, or “grow outs” are old enough to process. We take care of them, and now it’s time for them to take care of us. It’s a bitter sweet Mother’s Day Sunday 🌸
