I get a lot of inquiries from folks looking for a broke horse, but I often find that people have different ideas of what “broke” really means. I have found that there are two main types of “broke” horses, and understanding the difference can make a world of difference in finding the right match for you.
🔹 Handy Broke Horses:
These are the horses that excel in responsiveness, agility, and precision. A handy broke horse is trained to handle quick movements and tight turns, making them ideal for ranch work, roping, cutting, or any task where you need a horse that can move with speed and accuracy. They are incredibly smart, responsive to the slightest cues, and can be a bit more “on edge” in terms of their energy. These horses are best suited for someone who has experience riding and can keep up with their quick reactions.
🔹 Gentle Broke Horses:
On the flip side, a gentle broke horse is calm, steady, and patient. These horses are usually bombproof, meaning they are un-phased in almost any situation. They are often perfect for beginners or people who want a horse that is easy-going and forgiving. Gentle broke horses are great for relaxed trail rides, leisurely riding, or just bonding with your horse in a calm setting. They may not be as quick to react as handy broke horses, but they make up for it with their consistency and ease of handling.
🧐 So, which one is right for you?
If you’re looking for a horse to help you with performance, work tasks, or something that requires agility, a handy broke horse is probably your best bet. But if you’re after a steady, safe, and gentle partner for leisurely riding or bonding, then a gentle broke horse is the way to go.
