After a 3 month Board & Train, Flynn is ready to head home a new man!
I met Flynn and his momma during a time when she wasn't sure whether or not Flynn had what it took to be her multi-purpose Service Dog. After a few previous training programs from other companies with limited luck, we decided to give Flynn his final opportunity with MLU to see what he was made of. It turns out this boy is a rockstar, and simply needed the right guidance to bring out the best in him!
Flynn has a stellar temperament. He's confident, handler-focused, and has just the right amount of independence to enable him to problem solve during his multitude of tasks. He accompanied us at our recent road trip to Florida, visited Disney World, spent the holidays with family, and learned nearly 10 different tasks in a short window of time.
He goes home on Monday, and we're incredibly excited for this team's journey!

It's a special week for Opie! This big kid begins his transition to what will be the forever of his life 💜
As I was navigating the always chaotic Denver International Airport, a nice gentleman walked up and sat down on the bench next to mine. He continued to share his observations on how Opie is so attentive to me, and noticed I was walking toward my gate with his muzzle resting in my hand (a trained task).
He then asked what Opie does for me. I shared that I am his Trainer and he is going to begin the final chapter of his journey this week - that he is trained to notice subtle changes in his Handler's body, and that he responds to those changes in ways that will help her to stay grounded and in tune with her needs.
And then I showed him how. I turned my gaze downward, changed my breathing, and Opie began to nudge me repetitively with his nose. The gentleman was in awe - not just of Opie's quick tasking; but also how he managed to tune out every detail in his environment, including a stranger sitting and talking so closely next to him.
Many times, we don't realize the impact we have on others who are simply a passerby in our lives - but I know in my heart that this gentleman will remember Opie and our conversation about Service Dogs for a very long time.
I am often asked if I find it difficult, after having a dog for two years, only to see them leave. Each time, my answer is the same:
"I have the best human clients in the world. If you observed the same life changing future that I foresee unfolding in front of me, you'd share my same perspective. To watch a dog I have loved as my own move on from this chapter in order to fulfill their true calling, it means I have just experienced the easiest part of what I do."
Go do your thing, Opie! 🥹

I cannot say enough about this boy!
Opie accompanied his Trainer during a week long trip to visit family in Florida. During his time there, not only did he work full back to back days, but he experienced more restaurants than I can remember, a very busy and exciting college graduation, explored downtown St Augustine and even took a trip to their Medieval Torture Museum (where I was intently warned by the staff coming in that they previously had another SD team become very triggered by their exhibits), swimming at the beach, and multiple plane and Uber/Lyft rides - just to name a few. He was a rockstar during every outing - absolutely unshakeable in terms of confidence and poise. But what makes us most proud is how focused and happy to task he was throughout all of these experiences - he was pushed HARD, and never wavered from the true duties of his job. The brief moment in this video that captures Opie's expression is what I observe consistently from him. His eyes are constantly on his Handler, and he is immensely thoughtful about every move I make or command I give, and how he responds to it.
Opie will be getting placed at the end of this month, and he is absolutely ready! Trips like these serve as a wonderful testament toward Opie's ability to move onto the goals that have been set forth since he was just an 8 week old puppy. We're incredibly proud of him, and eager to watch this next chapter of him and his Handler's journey unfold.

In a very hectic environment, Opie responds to a change in his Trainer's breathing - which if it weren't for Opie's quick tasking, may otherwise indicate the onset of a panic attack in his Handler.
