Building up focus in Tully (golden retriever), and confidence in Piper (goldendoodle).

These girls have very different obstacles to overcome but both compliment each others training.

Sydney (on the left) just finished her 2 week refresher program! πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘

She has been here a few times before, including when she was an 8 week old puppy. So we know her very well. She has always been fearful, submissive, and uncertain in new situations. As she matured she became reactive to other dogs when out on walks, and on high alert which intensified her prey drive.

So these past 2 weeks have been all about boosting her confidence by improving all of her skills, and counter conditioning the way she feels about her triggers. Now she walks with her head held high and a wagging tail. She still has a long way to go, but with patience and consistency, she will continue to grow more confident and secure. πŸ€—πŸ™Œ

She is a sweet girl with amazing owners! We can't wait to have her back in a couple of weeks to join her sister on training walks! ❀🐾🐾

Sydney got to check out the petting zoo. She did so well and handled the crowd like a champ! ❀🐾🐾

πŸΎπŸ’™ CHARLIE πŸ’™πŸΎ 2 WEEK PROGRESS - PART 2!

In this video:
Heel, sit-stay, down-stay, come - all with increased distractions. Or in this case, his puppy friend, Freya.
πŸ€—πŸΎπŸΎπŸΎπŸΎπŸ™Œ

It is so important to teach your young dog how to behave, and have self control in the presence of other dogs. This prevents pulling on the leash, reactivity, and excitement when you come across another dog on walks or adventures.

πŸΎπŸ’™ CHARLIE πŸ’™πŸΎ 2 WEEK PROGRESS

13 week old sheepadoodle
Aspiring Therapy Dog

In this video:
'Wait' (to be released from crate)
'Get in' and point (to go into crate)
'Wait' (to be released to eat from dish)
'Come' and 'sit' (to clip the leash to collar)
'Wait' (to walk through front door together)
'Heel' (to walk on my left side)
Right, left, about turns, figure 8s
Automatic sit when I halt.
'Leave it' (leave food on the ground alone)
Increased distance to 20 ft on:
'Sit-stay' and 'down-stay'
'Come' (to a heel position)
'Wait' (to walk through front door together)

What else:
Charlie quietly sleeps in his crate throughout the night. He is also crated during the day for short amount of times while he cannot be supervised.
He has not had any potty accidents in the past week and uses the doggy door. He will be transitioning to using potty bells at home.
He likes to nap inside and outside in the shade, and play with his puppy friends!
He no longer tries to nip or growl at any of us. 😊

General information:
These are a lot of new skills for a pup this age to learn in just 2 short weeks. This provides a solid foundation for all the other training that is to come. It is imperative to continue this training at home so your pup does not forget any of it. Sessions can be short (5-10 minutes) or long (20-40 min), depending on your schedule and puppy's energy level.

Remember to have patience and make each session fun! If you or your puppy messes up, no big deal! Mistakes will happen. Just try again next session. We don't expect our kids to be ready to graduate high school after 2 weeks of school. 😊 So we shouldn't expect our puppies to be perfect after 2 weeks of training. ❀🐾🐾

Charlie is such a sweet pup and will be missed!!! I look forward to working with him again in the future!! πŸ€—πŸΎπŸΎ

Why pack walk???

Helps build confidence in pups. This is especially great for shy and anxious dogs.

Provides mental stimulation.

Teaches them proper leash walking and pacing.

Fosters socialization in a structured manner.

And a new chapter begins!!Hoping to offer classes to my community soon. 😊

I have a couple of spots open July 30th - Aug 13th!!! Buddy says come play!!!

Please note: A 2 week program is not enough time to solve long lived behavioral issues. We can definitely get started in correcting problem behaviors, but the work will need to be continued by YOU when your pup goes back home. So what can be accomplished in a 2 week board and train program?

➑️ Puppy Boot Camp
➑️ Refresher course for returning dogs
➑️ Trick training/task training
➑️ Improved (but not perfected) overall behavior in home, on leash, loose lead walking.
➑️ Beginning phase of desensitization and counter conditioning to triggers
➑️ Safe and controlled socialization
➑️ Improved recall

We tailor your pup's program depending on hers and your needs, and our availability. I will not take in a dog I don't believe I can help. I do refer to more seasoned trainers for dogs with aggression and behaviors I am not experienced in solving.

If interested, please act quick as summer spots fill fast!! Send your email address for pricing and more information.

PICKLES OFF LEASH!!! 🐾🐾❀🐢

Spent a few hours at Bass Pro Shops yesterday preparing for her CGCA & CGCU.

Working that off leash heel in a public location on the busiest day of the week! All the basics, stair and elevator work, and lots of 3 minute down stays from 20'+.

You've seen her in several of my videos over the past few months. She has been training with me since she was a tiny pup!

Wrightwood's 1st pack walk was wonderful this morning!! 🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾 We had a total of 11 dogs big and small, young and old.

All the dogs and owners were amazing!! 🀩😁

Thank you to all who joined us. Big thanks to Daniela for helping me organize it. This wouldn't have happened without you! πŸ™β€πŸ€—

Looking forward to the next one! If you'd like to join us, send your email to be added to the list!

❀🐾 AUTUMN 🐾❀
Sister to Ginger. 1 week progress.
We had some icy conditions today but we still had to get out and work!

Autumn is super sweet and cuddly. So much so that she doesn't want to "stay" and just wants to be right at her handlers' side! However, teaching a dog "stay" is an important skill that can be applied in real life situations. It shouldn't be left out of any training program!

We use this elevated dog bed to help teach this skill to new dogs who need a visual of where they should stay. It clearly teaches them not to step off of the bed. If they do, we guide them back onto the bed and try again. They quickly learn they only get rewarded when staying on the bed. Once they show a good understanding of what "stay" means, it can be practiced anywhere without the bed.

Autumn knows all the basics. More videos to come!

FOCUSING ON PUPPIES AND BONE GROWTH:

Today we bring you the explanation of why we shouldn't perform intense physical exercise with puppies until 18 months and even up to 24 months of age.
Puppy growth rates vary greatly by size. It's important to adapt diet and exercise to your puppies' specific requirements to ensure ideal skeletal development. Endocondral ossification (the process during which cartilage turns into bone) differs according to the adult size of your puppy, with closed growth plates (complete ossification has occurred) between 3 months in toy breeds and 24 months in large breeds (see photos).
There are many factors affecting growth rate and maturity age. For example, males mature more slowly than females. There are variations in periods of 'fast growth' ranging from birth to 11 weeks in small dogs and toys. Large breeds range from birth to 20 weeks (Hawthorne et al 2004). Excessive exercise and inadequate nutrition during these periods can lead to conformation and malformation of bones, which can lead to osteoarthritis development and degenerative joint disease.
Recommended exercise levels for puppies are 1 minute for each week of their life, twice a day. This should be LOW IMPACT at a steady pace. Puppies shouldn’t be fetching at high speeds, or jumping on/off furniture or in/out of vehicles.
If your goal is to train to compete for flyball or agility (for example), it is recommended to AVOID any jump training until full ossification has occurred.
This is why breeders tell new owners to not to rush certain physical activities with your pups. Instead, focus working on other things with them. Work their minds, smell, desensitizing, and socialization, etc.
After going through the development months and developing the corresponding plates, consult your veterinarian to determine if your dog is 100% ready for sport.

"DO NOT PET ME. I'M WORKING"

What exactly does this mean?

This means:
-No petting
-No talking to
-No saying his/her name
-No eye contact
-No action in an attempt to get the dog’s attention
-No allowing your child to run up to or grab for the dog

So, now to the question everybody wants to ask…...WHY?

The simple answer is that the Service Dog is there to keep his or her handler safe, and to perform very specific tasks to mitigate their handler's disability.

When the service dog is distracted he is not paying attention to his job and his human handler could very easily get hurt or worse.
This is not only bad, in most cases, this is ILLEGAL. You may not intentionally interfere or prevent an Service Dog from doing their job.

Try thinking about it like this: When you see a person using a wheelchair do you go up to them and ask if you can take it for a spin? When you see a person using a cane, do you allow your kids to run up to the person and touch or grab the cane? Hopefully not.

So, think of the service dog as a wheelchair or cane the next time you are tempted to pet or are about to ask to pet a Service Dog.

Service dog handlers get MANY questions everyday.....sometimes the best option may be to just quietly admire the working dog and handler from a distance. :)

She was so well behaved with all of the kids! 😁

Maddox, my 6 year old son wanted a turn at being her leader. πŸ™Œ

We can learn from children. Look at Maddox's relaxed and confident posture when he walks. Then watch how he leads as he runs. This is how we should look when we walk our dogs!
