Welcome back,
Let's learn about the different wolves!

As we learned in the last post, the modern grey wolf and our canine friends both came to evolve from the Megafaunal Wolf, a late Pleistocene Wolf.

So, if it all started with this ancient ancestor..
What are the species of wolf today, and how have we gotten here? Let's take a look.

The Grey Wolf was one of the few larger predators to survive the late pleistocene megafauna extinction. It is believed the Grey Wolf was able to survive on smaller prey as where the Late Pleistocene Wolf was adopted for hunting of the largest megafauna prey which led to it dieing off with the other creatures.

So, how many species of wolf do we have today?

The answer is two.
The Grey Wolf (Canis Lupus) and
The Red Wolf (Canis Rufus).

Why does it seem like we have so many kinds of wolves? Well, that's because of the Subspecies of wolves that have branched out in different parts of the world, being best adapted to their areas. We have roughly 40 Subspecies of wolf today.

Most all the Subspecies are from the grey wolf.
The Red Wolf is actually a result of breeding between the Grey Wolf and Coyotes.

The Beginning
Evolution of our canine companions.
(Part 1 of 3)

Did you know?
It all started with the early grey wolf?
Or so they thought...

The original ancestor was the Megafaunal Wolf, a gigantic elite hunter with a bite power 29% stronger and weight 25% more than the largest modern grey wolves. These wolves were pretty different than your modern grey wolf.

Humans and wolves started out by being beneficial to one another because the wolves would scavenge around the camps, the early humans would allow the wolves to stay close because this in turn would alert them to intruders or outsiders coming into the camp.

As the humans traveled and the wolves followed the camps the humans began to keep the more promising litter mates of these wolves with their immediate family. This was the beginning of what led to artificial selection.

This process of the wolf becoming one with the humans of the area was not believed to have been in only one place, rather this was believed to have been repeated by many different cultures in many different areas of thousands of years.

As this domestication continues we see a change in appearance and temperament of the wolves. Wolves continue to hybridize themselves to this day.

"So, in response to the question "Do dogs descend from wolves?", we can indeed say they do, but genetics now give us the tools to clarify which ones. Modern dogs, irrespective of their variety, all stem from a now-extinct line of prehistoric wolves that are only very distantly linked to modern wolves."

Texas streets and EU lists to the great Pacific Northwest. That's the Mission.
I will walk you through breeds and why knowing the different genetics is beneficial to providing your pup the most ideal life!
I plan to share breeds matching these discussions and showing you live adoptable examples. (Absolutely mixed breed mutts included, that's our specialty.)
