The prefrontal cortex, an area of the brain involved in decision-making, is not fully developed during adolescence. This can look like a dog barking and lunging at something, becoming easily and frequently distracted, a lack of inhibition, and/or not listening to verbal cues as well as they once did.

If you’re feeling frustrated with your adolescent dog, take a breath and try to remember this is temporary. 😮‍💨

LASER POINTER SYNDROME

Lots of people have noticed that their dogs love chasing laser lights, and humans love the fact that their dog is nice and tired after a round of laser games. But is that really what's happening?

Dog's are scavengers, which means that they're highly reward motivated. They hunt every now and then, but not to the same extent cats and other wild animals do. When we use a laser with our dogs, it might seem like they're having fun but in reality they're getting extremely frustrated because they're never able to catch the laser. They're also always over aroused when ever a laser is used which can actually stimulate cortisol production and make them more stressed out than calm. You'll notice this by the following:
•Hyper focused on finding the laser even when the game has stopped.
•They take a long time to relax after the game has stopped. This is because they never got to catch something, and the laser could appear at any time in their mind.
•They will start chasing anything that's shiny like a watch reflection or even a shadow.
•Some dogs will dig and scratch at the last spot the laser was seen.
•Laser lights also stimulate their prey drive and by them constantly chasing it, their prey drive can very easily become out of control.

So instead of creating a happy and tired dog, we're actually making them frustrated and causing behaviour problems for our furry friends such as anxiety disorders and even OCD.

So what are some safe alternatives?
•Puzzles and grazing games are great. Sniffing and scavenging produces all the happy hormones and calming signals in the brain. Instead of feeding your dog out of a bowl, use a snuffle mat, throw their kibble on the grass, hide piles of their food all over the room and teach them to find it.
•Walking, hiking and nature adventures. They're moving, sniffing and with their family, what's not to love?
•For very high energy adult dogs, flirt poles are a great way to train with prey drive since they do get rewarded for catching the prey. I would only recommend this for short amounts of time since fast running and turning can be bad for their joints.

About Us

Your Canine Commitment is here to help you become 100% committed to your dog for life. We will work to modify behavior through socialization, education and exercise. Established in 2016, Your Canine Commitment has helped save many dogs from being surrendered.

After volunteering her time at a local dog rescue, Sandy realized she didn’t know enough about dog behavior to feel confident in helping these poor souls become adoptable. Some were very troubled. SomeA good dog just doesn’t happen. With a little patience and a lot of repetition behavior can be modified. She invested in learning all she could and became a certified dog trainer through FernDog Training Academy.

She offers her services to the public hoping to have less and less dogs being surrendered . There are too many unwanted dogs out there. Please contact her today if you feel she could help with a certain issue you may be having or are considering giving up on your canine friend.
