While we don't normally post things outside of our dogs and kennel on here. We do occasionally post things that pertain to dog ownership, education and breeding. Today the dog community continues to watch this story. This is not the first one like this. A similar fate was met in the south when a breeder met someone away from his home. With the increase of online scams and just unscrupulous people, buyers, breeders and all must be vigilant.

As many as 10 Doberman puppies are missing after a breeder was killed in Colorado. Efforts are underway to locate them and solve his homicide.

FINAL REPORT ON A STUDY SCARF SUPPORTED:

EXPLORING NEW TREATMENTS FOR A PAINFUL EYE DISEASE - CORNEAL ENDOTHELIAL DYSTROPHY
By Sharon Albright, DVM, CCRT
Manager of Communications & Veterinary Outreach
AKC Canine Health Foundation
June 2024

Dogs are susceptible to a painful eye condition known as corneal endothelial dystrophy (CED). In this disease, the cells of the innermost layer of the cornea, the clear part of the eye, deteriorate and lose their important ability to maintain the fluid balance and clarity of the cornea. This results in corneal swelling and vision loss. Painful corneal ulcers can also form, potentially leading to infection and even eye removal.

The only definitive treatment for CED is corneal transplantation, which is rarely done in veterinary medicine due to the risk of rejection, lack of donor tissue, and cost. Veterinarians typically focus on palliative treatments to reduce corneal swelling and manage corneal ulcers.

To explore new treatments for CED, researchers at the University of California, Davis looked to a class of drugs called ROCK inhibitors. Ripasudil is a topical ROCK inhibitor that led to stable or improved disease in more than 60% of treated CED eyes in a recent study. Unfortunately, this drug is not commercially available in the United States and must be given four times per day. Building on this research with funding from the AKC Canine Health Foundation (CHF) (CHF Grant 02696: Efficacy and Safety of Netarsudil for Canine Corneal Endothelial Dystrophy), researchers tested another ROCK inhibitor, netarsudil, that is FDA-approved for the treatment of glaucoma in people and only requires twice daily administration.

To assess netarsudil’s effectiveness in treating canine CED, several measures of corneal health were monitored in dogs receiving either the medication or a control solution over 4-8 months. All dogs developed some degree of conjunctival hyperemia (dilation and redness of the conjunctival blood vessels) while receiving netarsudil, but it was never severe enough to require treatment and other adverse reactions were rare. While well-tolerated, corneal health measurements did not significantly improve during netarsudil treatment.

Researchers compared the results from this netarsudil study with their previous study on ripasudil. Even though ripasudil requires more frequent application, it does appear to be a better choice for treating CED in dogs.

Studies like this are important to develop proven, evidence-based treatments for canine diseases like CED. Veterinary medicine can often borrow knowledge and medications used in human medicine, but not always. This study demonstrates that research focused specifically on canine disease is needed to ensure a healthier future for our beloved dogs. CHF and its donors remain committed to finding and funding such studies with the most potential to advance the health of all dogs. Learn more about this important work at akcchf.org/research.

Today was the last day of a 5 day show week.

Summary today was:

Shasta took his class in sweeps and went back to compete for best in sweeps. Shasta also won his puppy class and went to compete for winners dog.

Rumor came to what was only her second time out and the biscuit Baby owned by Diana Ruiz and out of Phany and Daikon took her AmBred class and competed in a stellar class of girls for winners.

Tiki was shown by Genesis the last two days and it’s been a challenge for her as I often have Tiki so she was bad when I wasn’t showing her. Until…..
The two worked it out in Juniors and Genesis took a first place in the novice juniors class with Tiki.

So I have no other pictures as I was in the ring a lot today and I’ll get some to dwindle in from friends but until then. My pics reflect a great brag on my daughter who is just learning the ropes of the ring.

Congratulations to all the winners. Congrats to all the small steps that lead to big achievements and great memories

Thank you to Antietam Creek Samoyed club for hosting a lovely specialty.

Today at the dog show.

Thank you to Judge Robin Clark for the BOS in sweeps for Shasta. He has only ever been to one event and that was a national so we are so happy for the opportunity to let him be shown.

Shasta got to compete with the big boys for WD and gain more experience to the ring.

We were also so happy to show Rumor who took a 3rd in her class next to her sister. The girls were last together this same weekend 4 years ago as puppies and I love that they all get along.

Genesis competed then in Juniors which we barely made the connection on and got to the ring as they were calling her number.

Thanks to Diana and Merrilee for trusting me with ring time with their veterans Snickers and Bucky. Temps were good, our building wasn’t evacuated and it was another great day with friends. ❤️

The last 3 days were whirlwind of work and play. Trust me when someone says they do stuff with their dogs that there are several layers.

We have been at the York shows and today 14 Month Shasta took a reserve. He has been re-learning shows and we are so thanks that his owners have given us the chance to take home out.

This tends to be our first shows of the year. We have presented Tiki and Shasta along with a lovely lineup of dogs this week. I love to see friends win. I love to see camaraderie and kindness and good examples to the youth.

Thanks for those who took pics and entertained my energy. ❤️
