Here is a link to the current requirements for dog importation into the US (including coming back to the US from an event in Canada). They are not tremendously burdensome IF you prepare!

Starting August 1, 2024, all dogs entering or re-entering the U.S. must meet new requirements. AVMA's FAQ will answer your questions.

Border Collies are the most common breed in agility and their reported injury rate is much higher than that of other breeds. We aimed to identify demographic, training, and competition variables associated with the injury risk for this breed. We hypothesized that higher jump heights and competition....

If you find a tick attached to your dog (or other animal of yours) or to you, here is a resource that will test the tick for commonly carried & transmitted diseases. If the results come back negative, no need to begin treatment. No more random administration of antibiotics.
For more info, or for where to send the tick(s) for tests, either call 1.866.713.TICK
or send an email to:
[email protected]
Place the tick in a sealed ā€œzip lockā€ bag and mail. No other preparation is recommended.
The basic test costs $49 - pretty reasonably priced for valuable information!!

Remove the tick Use tweezers to carefully remove the tick, then place it in a small plastic bag. Learn how to remove a tick

Here is a link to a well written blog about dogs overheating. I find that people think alot about extreme weather temps, especially cold and wind-chill (ā€œreal feelā€), but not about the effects of heat and humidity - the resulting temperature index ā€œreal feelā€ temperature.
One thing not mentioned in the blog is using fans. Fan blowing on a wet dog creates evaporative cooling from the air moving over the wet surface. A wet dog sitting in a crate with no ā€œbreezeā€ creates humidity, which increases the temperature index!
BTW, personally, I use Waggle monitors in my vehicle. I tried several Bluetooth monitors in past years but found their functioning ranges to be too variable and inconsistent.
Even if you run the A/C in your vehicle or RV, please have a temperature/humidity monitorā€” A/C has been known to fail, resulting in catastrophic results!

Great information!

What is the RFGS?
The Royal Kennel Club and the University of Cambridge have devised the Respiratory Function Grading Scheme (RFGS) designed to advise owners if their dog is affected by BOAS (Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome) and give guidance to breeders on how to lower the risk of producing affected puppies. The program has been licensed by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals, and RFGS screening is now available in North America.

The a select number of veterinarians have been approved as OFA RFGS examiners as of Spring 2024.The list will continue grow in numbers and by geography over time, but the roll out is slow as all approved examiners must shadow under an approved examiner in a clinical setting in order to gain familiarity with the exam protocol and gain experience and proficiency in the grading scheme before becoming approved.

French Bulldog owners - hereā€™s an opportunity to participate in a study, and help the health of your breed!

We are seeking normal neurologic French Bulldogs to participate in a new study evaluating French Bulldogsā€™ structural conformation and potential underlying neurologic impacts. We will be performing neurologic exams, physical exam, x-rays of the spine, and pressure testing on those enrolled. We ask that the French Bulldogs enrolled not have a history of back pain or other neurologic disease. We also request that these patients are not on any medications other than preventatives. Please reach out to [email protected] for more information.

Clinical research allows us to develop new and more effective diagnostic and treatment options. UW Veterinary Care clinicians and staff are dedicated to raising the standard of care by using the latest technologies, while also performing research to advance veterinary and human medicine now and in the future.

Barn fires are usually devastating. Especially in light of the recent horrendous Ohio horse barn fire, I want to share a resource about FIRE PREVENTION! Once a barn fire starts, often it cannot be stopped until it destroys everything. Try to PREVENT fires.

Researchers at U C -Davis have released updated research and guidelines about spaying and neutering specific breeds of dogs to try to avoid health risks. This builds on their 2020 research.
Nothing is absolute for all dogs across the board, but these guidelines should be considered when discussing spaying or neutering YOUR specific dog with your veterinarian.

We have come a long way from the blanket recommendation of spay and neuter all dogs around 6 months of age. Yes, there are some health concerns (such as mammary cancer) with not spaying, but preventative health checks should be performed at least annually.

BTW, there are 2 breeds where the recommendations are to leave the dogs intact!

FYI - new regulations are to go into effect August 1 for bringing dogs into the US - it seems even when you go to Canada for an event.
Be sure your dogs are microchipped and that the microchip number is recorded on their rabies certificate. Please remember to prepare for trips in advance, as last-minute veterinary appointments may not be readily possible.

You also need to be sure you are following any regulations that the countries into which you are going may have.

MY PERSONAL OPINION: while these regulations may be an inconvenience, the importation of ā€œrescuedā€ dogs with diseases and/or unknown health histories poses a real threat not only to the animal population in the US but also to human health when you consider the zoonotic diseases such as rabies.

11/23/2023

This is a long post: Here are my comments about LIBRELA, since several of my clients have asked me my opinion about it ā€” used appropriately, Librela is probably wonderful, BUT, be aware of appropriate use and potential adverse reactions: Just a little information about Librela, the new (new in the US) monoclonal antibody monthly injection to help treat the pain from LIMB JOINT osteoarthritis (OA) in dogs (I do not believe it was tested in dogs with spine arthritis). It is ONLY APPROVED for use in dogs with limb joint OA - no other conditions. It works by inhibiting nerve growth factor (NGF), a protein that is elevated in dogs with OA and is involved with pain. When Librelaā€™s active drug inhibits NGF, that pain sensation doesnā€™t get to the brain, so the dog doesnā€™t feel as much pain.
By far, for the most part, owners have reported either wonderful results in arthritic dogs being more comfortable and mobile, or little improvement.
What is very troubling are the reports of adverse reactions that donā€™t seem to have been widely reported to the veterinary community, including anaphylactic and neurological reactions. The neuro reactions have included severe weakness, ataxia/difficulty walking and/or standing and even seizures. It appears that dogs having adverse reactions are those that do not only have OA, but may also have some degree of concurrent neuro issues (which is common in older dogs).
More adverse reactions seem to occur after one of the repeated monthly interval injections.
It also seems that if a dog has a non-fatal adverse reaction that the adverse symptoms appear to gradually improve over a period of more than 4 weeks, with the dog returning to or nearly to its pre-Librela status. I have observed this in a patient that received Librela.
PLEASE discuss the pros & cons with your primary care veterinarian. As I said, most owner reports have been good.
