Teaching Functional Communication is one of the most important parts of my job as an ABA therapist for children with Autism. I love blending my hobby with what I learn from my job.

"Manding," or making demands is a vital part of getting essential needs like food, using the bathroom or even wanting attention.

I think Picasso has mastered Manding for millet. What do you think?! What would your bird ask for if they are non-verbal?

Did you know that when cockatiels preen they are actually "zipping up" their feathers?

Preening is a healthy behavior exhibited by birds who are happy and comfortable. When birds become anxious, unfamiliar with their surroundings, have an unhealthy diet, or receive excessive attention for preening, sometimes this turns into "over-preening" or plucking.

In order for Picasso to get out of her cage, she has to ring a bell. Flock calling/screaming for attention does not get the cage opened. Reinforce quiet, calm behavior!

Happy 3rd birthday to Picasso! The first picture is Picasso with her brothers and sisters, can you tell which one she is?

Right now she's working on her balloon game on the iPad, correctly choosing the right image in her book when prompted, choosing toys for her cage (preference assessment) and using basic mands on a comm board (yes/no, treat, scratch).

Can't wait to see how much she grows this year!
