Are you thinking of adding to your family? Before you do please think about this
These two handsome devils are Scout & Tracker (left to right) and they are littermates. The boys are 10 mos old and both are wildly smart and very, very bonded. Their parents called me in because the boys have been getting into fights pretty often and they have a host of anxiety and over-excitement issues.
After a couple of sessions, it has become clear that the boys have fallen into a condition known as “littermate syndrome”. While not all siblings fall prey to littermate syndrome, the risk of it happening causes trainers and responsible breeders to recommend against bringing home littermates.
Littermate syndrome causes canine siblings to have an intense, dysfunctional and often stress-inducing bond that results in separation anxiety when out of each other’s sight, intense over-excitement that leads to fighting, difficulty bonding with humans or other dogs, and generalized severe anxiety. In most cases, the best solution is to re-home one of the dogs. Once separated, the dogs can decompress into a healthier existence that frees them to bond with humans and other dogs, and alleviates the anxiety that being with their sibling created.
Before making the decision to re-home one of the boys, we will explore rehab potential by training the boys separately, keeping them apart strategically to help address separation anxiety, and more. This is going to be a serious challenge. Stay tuned.
