ON LAMINITIS/FOUNDER:

Laminitis is a prevalent and extremely painful condition in horses that has significant welfare implications. It is an inflammatory condition of issues (laminae) bonding the hoof wall to the pedal bone in the hoof. It is often recurrent for individual horses. Founder occurrence is due to a lack of blood flow in the laminae which produces swelling and inflammation in the hoof. Founder (laminitis) in horses is a serious condition of the foot caused by the pedal bone rotating and pointing towards the horses sole and in the worst cases to sink right through it.

How does the TheraPlate help with treating Laminitis / Founder?

By helping improving blood flow into the feet can aid in clearing and cleaning the circulatory system of the lymphatic system and help provide some digital vasodilatory (shock) support. Help reduce inflammation and increase hoof growth.

Other Management to take into consideration while treating Laminitis / Founder

Management is paramount. A modified diet providing adequate nutrition based forage, digestible fibre. Avoiding excess carbohydrates. Routine hoof care, good health-maintenance including parasite control, vaccinations to reduce the risk of the horse’s susceptibility to illness or disease, avoid grazing on lush pastures especially late morning and late afternoon hours since plant sugars are at the highest during these times. Restrict pasture intake especially springtime or anytime the pasture suddenly greens up. Avoid pastures when there’s a frost. Avoid stressful environment.

Blood is pumped from the heart through arteries to the hoof and is assisted in its return through a “pumping mechanism” in the hoof. This mechanism is necessary due to the position of the hoof in relation to the heart. There are no muscles in the lower leg or hoof to aid in the return of venous blood to the heart. Thus, the hoof has to pump venous blood back to the heart.

An extensive network of veins called a venous plexus are located on both sides of each of the lateral cartilages and in the sensitive structures of the hoof. The compression of these veins by the plantar cushion against the lateral cartilages or the coffin bone against the hoof acts as a “pump” to force the blood up the leg and back to the heart.
