Introducing our 2022-2023 officers ⭐️ starting with our lovely president, Rachel Kuehl!

Rachel is in the class of 2024 and is interested in zoo medicine!

“I’m from Portland, Oregon! I got my undergraduate degree in Biology at Portland State University before taking a couple of years to gain more experience as a vet tech in a mixed small animal / exotics practice, then worked as a lab animal technician while volunteering at the Oregon Zoo before applying to KSU CVM 💜 I joined AMC during my first year because I knew NOTHING about birds at the time, but knew that I would be working with birds in the future. Through wildlife / zoo externships over the last two years I’ve gained a lot more confidence with birds… but there is still SO MUCH more to learn!”

The AMC will be hosting our Avian Trivia Night TONIGHT at 5:30pm in Mosier E-107. Come learn about birds and show off your fancy knowledge!

To make this event even better, we will be providing dinner for AMC members. You can sign up to be a member at the meeting. If you’ve read this far and still aren’t convinced, we are even having the trivia night co-hosted by our club advisors, Dr. James Carpenter and Dr. Sara Gardhouse! If you haven’t met them yet, they are the CVM’s exotics and zoo med teaching faculty and clinicians (and are tons of fun and are coming loaded with tons of bird facts).

Aside from a fun night of trivia with the CVM’s Exotics Experts, we will be introducing the AMC’s semester plans and opening nominations for the officer board elections. This a fun, yet important meeting – be sure you’re there!

PM us for details to sign up and if you haven’t, don’t fret! You’re still welcome to join in the bird fun (just bring your own meal. See you there!

Monday Medical Quiz!

A 4 week old chicken presents with unilateral leg paralysis, and her legs are splayed. Upon physical examination you notice it has swollen bumps on its skin, which you realize must be feather follicles, as well as some crusty scabs. You also notice labored breathing and that the bird has a blue-gray colored iris. The owner reports that the bird has had diarrhea and has lost weight, and that other birds in her flock have had similar symptoms.

What do you think is wrong with this chicken? Enter your response in the comments below.

Happy Monday! We’re kicking your week off with one of the biggest names in veterinary medicine (and we’re fortunate to have him as the founding faculty advisor for the Avian Medicine Club)! He has given his time, knowledge, and passion to help bring the AMC to K-State!

“James W. Carpenter, MS, DVM, Dipl. ACZM, is a Professor of Zoological Medicine at Kansas State University. He established the program in zoological/exotic animal medicine at KSU in 1990, which has now trained 43 interns and residents and thousands of veterinary students. He is the Co-editor of Ferrets, Rabbits, and Rodents: Clinical Medicine and Surgery (2004; 2012; 2021) and Editor of the Exotic Animal Formulary (1996, 2001, 2005, 2013, 2018). Dr. Carpenter is the Past-President of the American Association of Zoo Veterinarians, the Association of Avian Veterinarians, and the American College of Zoological Medicine. He was named the Exotic DVM of the Year for 2000, the T.J. Lafeber Avian Practitioner of the Year for 2012, and the Oxbow Exotic Mammal Health Award recipient for 2019. In 2013, the Veterinary Health Center named the new veterinary facility at Manhattan’s Sunset Zoo the “James W. Carpenter Clinic at Sunset Zoo”. Dr. Carpenter is also the former Editor-in-Chief of both the Journal of Zoo and Wildlife Medicine and the Journal of Avian Medicine and Surgery (for 26 years).”

Kicking off your Friday with our last AMC officer board introduction to your wet-lab coordinator:

“My name is Sarah and I am a first-year student from Dubuque, Iowa! I grew up with birds, turtles, hamsters, fish, dogs, cats, and horses so I’ll be looking forward to studying the mixed animal track! I am interested in exotic animal medicine and hope to pursue a residency in zoo medicine. I am pretty adventurous and would love to live in South Africa some day! I became involved with AMC because I love how diverse bird species are and wanted to learn more! My favorite birds are hyacinth macaws and flamingos.”
