Two Category 5 hurricanes ripped through our islands in September. "Irmaria" as we now call it. It badly damaged and destroyed our island's businesses, homes and belongings, brought down our power grid and communications. People lost their lives. It altered our landscape. It scared us, made us cry. It forever changed our island lives and the way we view it. But we are strong and with the help of others are working through a new normal, towards a stronger existence. Most people know me and my husband Frank as the owners of Caribbean Saloon, Pure'ly Paws & Six Fifteen in Red Hook, St. Thomas. We have been a proud part of this community for 25 years. We are also as many here, passionate lovers of all animals. My affection for animals began back as far as I can remember and grows stronger every day. We have loved and lost our beloved fur-family members, some quite tragically. This is for them, in loving memory of them and for the countless others all around the world. What began as a strong sense of personal responsibility to help our islands residents, their pets and strays turned into something far more rewarding. A community of the most beautiful, caring people have all come together to support these animals. Local animal organizations, the loving people struggling tirelessly on a normal basis to save lives have somehow found even more human strength. Their resilience and commitment brings me to tears. The amount of other friends, old and new who always drop everything to devote their time to help bring me to tears. Most have badly damaged or destroyed homes and businesses, lost their jobs, homeless. Yet everyone joins together because the mission is greater than us. I can not even begin to personally mention everyone as the list is long but you all know who you are, most pictured here.
