Sleep, Red Flags!🚩🚩🚩

Have you ever given much thought to your dog's sleeping habits?

We underestimate how important sleep is to humans, let alone our dogs. We should never underestimate the impact of sleep, or lack thereof, on your dog's behaviour.

Dogs need to sleep between 12 and 14 hours per day, while puppies and adolescents need more—between 18 and 20 hours per day. We mean actual, crashed-out, restful sleep, not just dozing or watching the world go by.

Sleep is essential for processing and learning. Without sufficient sleep, your dog will struggle to retain learned information, which can easily fade or disappear.

There are some of the red flags, we look for that can tell you that your dog is possibly not getting enough sleep
🔺 Increased mouthing in puppies and young dogs.
🔺 Restlessness – unable to settle
🔺 Increased attention seeking
🔺 Barking – tiredness means dogs are less likely to be able to process things well, so their natural reaction is to bark when they are unsure of something
🔺 Increased anxiety – everything becomes slightly more overwhelming, particularly for a dog that struggles with anxiety already will be worse when they are over-tired
🔺 Over-excitable – hu***ng, jumping up and basically, they will find everything super exciting.
🔺 Lack of focus – tired dogs will struggle with even the simplest tasks.
🔺 Increased reactive responses – when a dog is tired, they have a lower tolerance for social interactions or finds it more challenging to deal with frustration.
🔺 Changes in appetite

So sleep is not for wimps; it is crucial for all living beings, including our canine companions!

Do you think your dog gets enough sleep in a 24-hour period?

🚩🚩🚩Following on from last Wednesday's post, these are some of the red flags we see that could indicate there is a problem with your dog's gut health.

▪️Restlessness and or irritability
▪️Barking (at certain times of the day – often in the evenings)
▪️Nipping and mouthing
▪️Licking surfaces
▪️Pawing at carpet/bedding
▪️Picky eating habits
▪️Periods of inappetence
▪️Obsessed with food or Always hungry
▪️Stealing food
▪️Eating non-food items
▪️Food guarding
▪️Eating poo – their own and other dogs.
▪️More significant amounts of poo than is normal for the size of the dog
▪️Inconsistent stools (firm in the morning, getting looser as the day goes on)

Which ones have surprised you?

When we assess a dog with a behaviour challenge(s), we go beyond examining the behaviour and review many aspects of your dog's life, including diet and gut health.

Some behaviour challenges may be caused or influenced by a gut problem, and if we don't address it, the behaviour will never really resolve.

If you would like to discuss your dog's behaviour challenges and learn how we can help with our bespoke 121 support, email [email protected], and we will arrange a chat.

How, why and when to keep your dog cool during hot summer days. 🥵

Every dog is different and has different tolerances to the heat, despite the breed. It’s important to get to know what YOUR dog is able to cope and be comfortable with.

It’s easy to get terrified from all the scare mongering on social media about the heat but important to understand and be aware of the signs and risks that come with walking your dog in such temperatures.

Educate yourself, know the dog in front of you and use common sense. Stay cool out there people! ✌🏻

I have been talking to some clients recently about how the link between chronic pain and behaviour often doesn't make sense at face value.

Sometimes our pain does not flare up whilst doing an activity. Let me explain.

On Friday - I did some gardening here at our house.
On Saturday - I worked most of the day and then sat on an uncomfortable chair.
On Sunday - I traveled to my parents' house and helped with their gardening for around 4-5 hours.
On Monday - I had a great yoga session BUT at the end of the lesson I realised I had pushed myself too far.

Guess what.....

On Tuesday - Lots of pain in my hip.
On Wednesday - Pain was even worse.

I didn't notice my pain flare up on any of the days where I was busy, happy, socialising, exercising and generally getting on with things. I noticed the pain when I stopped and rested. Also, my body can take a couple of days for that pain to build.

Anyone ever gone for a run and then hurt two days later?

A lot of the dogs I work with will go on 2 hour walks, no problem, but their behaviour flares up in the evening or the morning after or when they are asleep.

Why do our dogs do things that hurt them? Why did I do all of those activities? - Because I wanted to...because I didn't understand or think through the consequences... because they felt good at the time...because I had no choice.

In traditional dog training, punishment is often used to discourage undesirable behaviours. This can include physical corrections such as leash jerks, alpha rolls, or even the use of choke or prong collars. The aim is to establish the trainer's dominance and control over the dog.

Traditional training methods often focus on correcting or suppressing behaviours that are deemed undesirable, rather than teaching the dog alternative behaviours or reinforcing positive ones. The primary goal is obedience and compliance, rather than considering the emotional well-being or natural instincts of the dog.

Moreover, traditional training may not prioritise building a strong bond and trust between the dog and the trainer. Instead, it is more focused on establishing a hierarchical dominance structure, with the trainer at the top.

It is important to note that the views on traditional training are evolving, and there is a growing understanding and shift towards more ethical and humane training approaches that prioritise positive reinforcement and consider the dog's welfare as a whole.

Ethical dog training encompasses much more than teaching behaviour change. It involves understanding a dog's natural behaviours and instincts, and using cues to communicate effectively. This type of training places a strong emphasis on meeting the dog's needs, ensuring their emotional well-being is prioritised throughout the process.

Ethical dog training recognises that teaching new behaviour options is just one aspect of a broader approach to dog care. It takes into account the dog's overall well-being and fosters a positive and respectful relationship between trainer and dog. By understanding the dog's needs, ethical training aims to meet them through a combination of physical exercise, mental stimulation, and social interaction.

In ethical dog training, the trainer is aware that a dog's behaviour is often a result of their environment, genetics, and past experiences. Rather than attempting to suppress or control these behaviours, ethical training works with the dog's natural instincts and focuses on positively reinforcing desired behaviours. This ensures that the dog is not subjected to unnecessary stress or harm.

Overall, ethical dog training in the UK combines the use of cues to effectively communicate with the dog, along with a comprehensive understanding of the dog's needs. By considering the bigger picture of a dog's well-being, ethical training aims to create a harmonious and trusting relationship between trainer and dog.
