Here’s the truth, ignore the myths going around on fb!!

Is it true that if we use cold water on heat stroke pets they will go into shock?

One of the most common things we still hear is that we can only use tepid water on a pet with heat stroke, incase they get some complications like hypothermic overshoot, peripheral vasoconstriction hindering a cooling response, and cardiogenic shock...

We have heard not to use cold water in case it causes shock... this rarely happens!

But guess what? In a recent study over 26% of dogs presented with heat stroke died, with flat faced breeds making up nearly half of heat stroke cases seen in the study.

You should:

💧Get someone to call the local veterinary practice and tell them you're going to travel down with a heat stroke patient
💧Pour, hose or if possible immerse the pet in very cold water (this should obviously be done under constant supervision, ensuring the head is fully above water and immersion should not be attempted if the animal is too large, or you are unable to do so without hurting yourself)
💧NB: If using a hose pipe, make sure it has run through until cold, as they can often contain water that is extremely hot in the tubing initially
💧Do not drape in towels and leave them in situ. Keep the cold water flowing.
💧Move to a cool, shaded area
💧Prepare to transport to vets in a cold, air conditioned car

In studies they found that:

🌅International consensus from sports medicine organisations supports treating EHS with early rapid cooling by immersing the casualty in cold water.
🌅Ice-water immersion has been shown to be highly effective in exertional heat stroke, with a zero fatality rate in large case series of younger, fit patients.
🌅Hyperthermic individuals were cooled twice as fast by Cold Water Immersion as by passive recovery.
🌅No complications occurred during the treatment of three older patients with severe heat stroke were treated with cold‐water immersion.
🌅Cold water immersion (CWI) is the preferred cooling modality in EHS guidelines and the optimal method applicable to UK Service Personnel
🌅Studies suggest using either ice-water or cold-water immersion

The best intervention is PREVENTION, but if you find yourself with an animal with heat stroke, using cold water either by pouring, hosing or ideally (if safe) immersion then this may help reduce their temperature to safe levels while you transport to a veterinary practice.

BOOKINGS for 2024 - Important Info ‼️

With the increasing costs and licence fees over the last 18 months, we have tried to absorb most of the costs as possible, but we will now be rising the cost of homeboarding to £30 per day for one dog. Two dogs will have a massive discount of £47 per day.

It wasn’t a decision that we have taken lightly but also looking at the costs of some kennels in the area, we feel this is still very reasonable. When I make sure your dogs are cared for like my very own, and they stay with me in my own home, in the countryside with acres of land to roam. We are also a 5 ⭐️ licensed (with North Yorkshire CC) homeboarder.

We have always had a cancellation policy in place (outlined in our policies and procedures that are signed by client per year) but I never felt the need to enforce it before. However, last year we had last minute cancellations (some of the day of the booking), dates changing and it has affected the business. So I’m sorry to say that I will now be enforcing it.

A 25% deposit will be payable on booking to secure your dates. If a cancellation occurs, then all fees except the deposit will be returned, or you can transfer your deposit to another booking.

If a booking is cancelled between 14 days and 48 hours then 75% of the fee is payable. Within 48 hours, 100% is payable.

All fees are payable before your dog arrives also. As it’s difficult trying to chase for payments long after the stay.

Some dogs are in for a week or two at a time so when a cancellation happens, we have no income for that time. We are not a big kennel and only have very limited space.

I hope everyone understand this decision that we have had to make.

Please get your dates in and I’ll send the booking forms over to you ☺️

You want your puppy to think that hanging around with you is the best thing in the world; when you’re on the move he wants to be too, when you’re doing nothing he wants to be too.

Just in the way that you sat on the step with your puppy and stood at the car then so too you’re going to get into the habit of doing nothing out on your walks... and it is one of the hardest things in dog training to get into the habit of; when you’re on a walk you want to be walking, when you’re training you want to be training, not hanging around doing nothing, however, there are times, many times, when you’re out and about and doing exactly that... meeting friends in the street, browsing a shop window, having lunch in the pub or waiting your turn to do an exercise in a training group.

Stand still for a minute and watch the world go by... if your puppy starts to wander off, take a little step away from him and give him a gentle prod with a finger; when he comes back to you smile and continue admiring the view – if the prod isn’t enough say his name in a fast and almost, but not quite, sharp way as you do so. He’ll get the hang of it very quickly and the more you do it the easier it will be for your puppy to just chill out when you stop and do nothing.

Good advice!! Stay safe ❤️ 🐶 🐴 Stay cool 😎

THE HEAT IS COMING - KEEP YOUR ANIMALS SAFE!

This is the current prediction for Monday and Tuesday.

You should not be riding or walking dogs or exercising yourself during the hours of 6am to 9pm on these days.

Do NOT take dogs out in cars except Iin an emergency.

You can wet down your animals if they have to be out but dogs should be inside.

AT NIGHT (starting tonight) - OPEN as many WINDOWS as you safely can.

IN THE DAY - CLOSE all WINDOWS and CLOSE all CURTAINS/SHUTTERS/BLINDS. Your house has good insulation and should be cooler than outside.

Avoid cooking on stoves as this heats the house up. Microwaving or air fryers generate less heat. Or just eat cold food.
