POCO, the brave little burro & friends

From Feb. 21, 2021. While I have tried to keep this page current with posts of Poco's friends and horses from JERAS, it was pointed out to me that this was Poco's page. Please understand my history with him was short and we tried very hard to help him and it was very emotional for us trying to help his body which was failing badly when his mind wasn't. We did not have the years when he was healthier nor the videos and pictures of those day. For those who want to re-live those days of Poco you can scroll back through the pictures on here and historically reminisce. I leave you with a song from Poco. I cry as I post this because while he was here I was the one daily caring for him and I miss him more than you will ever know. I know others miss him too but you didn't have to make the decision to let him go and I am still devastated I, we could not do more. I don't want to have to re-live that pain to keep the page current so here we are. Run In Paradise POCO. You are missed.

Introducing Dave and his mom, Jelly to the herd went very smooth after they shared a fenceline for a few weeks. This makes us happy.

The minis that come back a few weeks ago are now back in the pasture they shared before being adopted. It was as though they never left, even though it has been several years.

Rain dance by baby Maisie. Her first play date today with Miss Kitty in the stall with her AND is rained!!!!

As baby Maisie works through the trauma to her hooves from her malnourishment and illness she had last January we are pleased with the progress she is make and feel Poco's presence with us watching over her.

I have to be quick to catch Maisie's song....lol.

Apologies this has been a crazy week. Baby Maisie is out of the hospital and back at her foster moms. She has firm wraps on her knees to help support them as the bed sores health. She was buckling over at the knees when she was surrendered to us on 3-11-22. More physical therapy is needed and she has a follow up dr appt Monday. For now we are all very happy with how much better she can get up and down and walk around.

Maise came to us a week ago, unable to stand on her own because she lacks muscles from being so underweight. She had been seen by the prior owners vet the end of January and was doing no better when seen again approximately 10 days ago. We agreed to take her into the rescue and our friend Rachel had room and the ability to care for her at her ranch in Cave Creek. Kelly picked her up for us and transported her directly to Chaparral Medical Center where Rachel, our vet and several interns and externs from Midwestern Veterinary University were waiting her arrival. Numerous tests were run and xrays taken on her knees to be there was no infection in the joints where she had bedsores from laying down so much. While she looks fluffy, there is nothing but bone under her fur, she is malnourished with a body condition score of 1 out of 9. Her hind legs wobble as she walks and her hocks rub on each other because she has no upper body muscle to sustain proper conformation. We put her on our refeeding program and are slowly increasing the amount of food she gets throughout the day/night. After a week she is now able to stand on her own and slowly walk around. The wounds on her knees are starting to heal and the swelling is way down. In a few weeks she will be coming up to Snowflake to keep Teddy company as she goes through the months of rehab ahead. We can hardly wait.

Snow day in Snowflake.

I am tired of the cold nights, but love seeing him happy to see me coming with food and blanket.

Rain, turning to freezing temps overnight. Keep them dry and they will stay warm. The horses and donkeys all have shelters they can go in to stay dry. Hopefully NO snow.
