Huge separation anxiety training success for our little terrier friend đđđ
Huge separation anxiety training success for our little terrier friend đđđ
Heâs not only succeeding at his happy home alone training (3 hours plus now đŞ) but has also recently proofed that heâs generally grown in confidence and has generalised the feeling of safety when alone, by settling home alone in a completely new environment (while on holiday with his humans).
He was of course carefully monitored by his incredibly dedicated humans (who were able to enjoy that very well deserved cocktail in the sun without canine companionship).
Couldnât be happier for both our four-legged friend and his people for improving their quality of live all round.

How to get a rock solid recall with your dog
For a rock solid recall add some fun and variation
- Vary the rewards (food, toys, play)
- Vary how you deliver the rewards (throw a food treat to âgo findâ, have the dog catch the treat, whisk a tug toy out and more)
- Vary the cues: from your recall cue to other cues na behaviours that make your dog come back to you, such as a hand target (touch), Middle, running through your legs, pattern games like 123&treat, etc

Why you shouldnât leave your dog with food during Separation Anxiety training.
1ď¸âŁ A lot of dogs wonât eat the food as they are too anxious being home alone.
2ď¸âŁ You risk the food becoming a pre-departure cue if you havenât yet taught your dog that being home alone is ok. So the food (Kong, lickimat, etc) becomes a scary predictor of you leaving.
3ď¸âŁ Some dogs may be just be temporarily distracted by the food and once the food is gone, the dog gets anxious. And this wonât allow you to assess how long your dog is actually able to be comfortably be home alone for.

Tip 3 for separation anxiety training success
Setting up the right training environment for your dog â¤ď¸đâ¤ď¸
đ§ If you live in an apartment building and your dog might get triggered from the noises coming from the stairwell, consider having your dog in a room away from the front door, and behind a stair gate (your dog needs to be happy and relaxed behind that gate before you start to practice alone time).
đŞIf your dog likes to look out of the window and might get triggered by seeing people or other dogs passing, manage access to the window/s
đś If you have a puppy or adolescent dog and thereâs risk of them chewing stuff around your home, create a puppy/ teenage proof space for them.

Tip 2: how to train & your training checklist for separation anxiety training success
Understanding the why and how is crucial for separation anxiety training success.
Familiarise yourself with the concept of gradual exposure, assess what your dog is comfortable with right now (this might only be getting up from the sofa and taking a step away or it might be going out the front door for 5 seconds) and plan your training schedule from there.
The more organised your are about the training process and whatâs needed for it, the smoother it will be for all involved.
As this will quite possibly be a long journey for you and your dog, it really makes a difference to be prepared.
Wolfgang and I are wishing you all the best with your training and get in touch if you need help.

Tip 1 for Separation Anxiety Training Success
One of the most important components of all of my separation anxiety programmes is to teach my client what their dog is communicating. How to spot those early and subtle signs of stress (during alone time training and, matter of fact, all day every day).
For alone time training, you need to catch the more subtle signs. The signs that tell you that your dog is getting a little worried BEFORE he or she may enter full blown panic. And when you see those signs (in general, an increase in, or combination of, subtle stress signs) you to return home, pronto. And review your separation anxiety training steps accordingly.
Subtle signs of stress or anxiety can look like:
* Yawning/ snappy yawns (out of context, I.e. not when your dog has just woken from a deep slumber)
* Lip or nose licking
* Eyes blinking
* Lowering of head and neck/ lowered body posture
* Immobility - freezing or extreme decreased activity (which can look like nothing!!)
* Frequent changes in (body) position
* Grooming
Your task is to become an expert in your dogâs individual ways to communicate. Note down whatâs ânormalâ for your dog. What do they look like when playful, when relaxed at home, when startled or stressed, when in need of some exercise or attention from you.
That way you can then assess what is a stress signal, for your dog specifically, and what isnât.

HOW TO TEACH CHECKING IN đâ¤ď¸
Step One:
* When out walking, mark every time your dog looks at you, or in your direction.
* I use the word âyesssâ to mark the desired behaviour.
* After youâve marked, deliver a treat which you can throw towards your dog or feed from your hand.
Please note: this is not about getting your dogâs attention with a word or sound, this is about capturing a behaviour that your dog offers you, unprompted.
Keep this up for a few weeks and eventually, switch to marking & treating intermittently, or as I like to call it Las Vegas slot machine style.
For example with Wolfgang, I mark once or twice when out walking, sometimes not at all for a few days, then a little more frequently again.

Synchronised recall is on fleek đ
I use what I would call a âuniqueâ recall cue for Wolfgang (pup pup).
Why? So I donât âpoisonâ my recall cue in other situations (ie using the same word in other scenarios) and can keep it perfectly positive for my dog.
A lot of my former puppy training clients tell me (to date) that their dog would hear my voice (recall cue) on a social media video and react instantly #saysitallâ¤ď¸

I work with Chirag Patel's method to teach an automated 'drop' behaviour, using a classical conditioning based approach.
I love how the dog responds in this video. It's almost like he doesn't know what's happening to him; hearing the word 'drop' automatically makes him open his mouth and the ball falls to the floor.
Et voila!
'Drop' is one of the behaviours I pay VERY well for (and for life). After all, dogs are natural scavengers and we all need motivation to perform potentially difficult behaviours.
Please note, I would not use this method with dogs who are protective of their food (resource guarding). Please consult a professional in this case.

Navigate and negate every day aversive situations for your dog via building a strong trust account.
In every day life, there will be situations (big or small), with your dog, where you have to retreat to something that is a little negative, in the eyes of the recipient.
The aim is of course always to prepare your dog for all eventualities, teaching cues and behaviours that as a result mean you wonât encounter these situations in the first place.
But as we all know, itâs quite impossible to prepare for everything and anything!
Building, and maintaining, a strong trust account with your dog will help to negate those negative experiences, so a bad experiences wonât tip the scale and will have less of a negative impact overall.
How you build that trust account:
- By being your dogâs safe place
- By giving your dog choice and asking for consent whenever you can (learn to talk dog)
- By using positive reinforcement training methods
- By playing with your dog, on their terms!

PREY DRIVE, SAY WHAAAAAT?!?
I take every opportunity to work with Wolfgang on checking in with me when sheâs close to other animals that may spark her instinctive prey drive.
In addition to good quality socialisation and desensitising her to other animals (she would love to chase), we also worked on teaching her alternative, and mutually exclusive, behaviours to do instead: meaning to check in with me when she sees birds. And then get rewarded for this tenfold (after all Iâm competing with something incredibly exciting here).
But most importantly itâs key to understand that so many other learned behaviours come into this. Ie Wolfgang knowing that good things come from engaging with me at all times, that I give her choice and control over her environment (and the trusting bond that comes with this), that I provide other outlets for âchaseâ and âgrabâ and âshakeâ and so forth.
And I honestly never thought weâd come this far! Considering sheâs a terrier cannon and then some, Iâm so proud of her how calm sheâs become around birds (and rabbits!!).
Note: sheâs on lead here as some of the birds were very close to the path and I donât want to risk it, after all, sheâs a dog and not a machine!

Accidental Dog Training #wolfgangsway
A lot of Wolfgangâs learned behaviours and associated cues havenât been taught, in the way how I teach my wonderful clients to train their dogs.
Instead, Iâve often said something to her (with words or body language), she then offered me a behaviour in response (which in her observant ways is mostly exactly what I want her to do) and I would reward her for it. After a few opportunities and repetitions, itâs become a learned behaviour. Et voila đ
In this video she does âstep outâ (âŚof the lead wiggled around your super sweet little leg), which is a great example of those accidentally learned behaviours, and I have no idea when she even learned this one đ
Dogs are amazing, in how they can read us. And Wolfgang is an extra observant furry noodle, she can sit and stare at me for ages (yes, creeps me out at times..).
What are your dogâs accidental behaviours and/ or cues?

REINFORCEMENT, it works both ways âď¸
When I see her glowing little face and that she has fun when we train, my heart simply melts every single time 𼰠pretty much the best reinforcement (for me) there is.
After all, training should be fun for both the student and the teacher (Wolfie & I swap those roles quite regularly).
Here we are working on generalising her âstayâ and release (âfreeâ) cues.
Her reward on this occasion is chasing after me down the hill (sheâs a real sprinter!), at other times it would be food or a toy or a good scratch on her neck.
I incorporate training in our day to day activities, as and when I can and Wolfieâs up for it. In the park, she often encourages me to do some training via sitting down and staring until I give her something to do.
And sheâs persistent!!!
And I LOVE that!
