Let’s talk about the absolute joy of being an equestrian, shall we? 🌞🐴We love our horses, right? Doesn’t matter if we’re frying alive in a heatwave, trudging through snow, or knee-deep in mud – we’re out there, doing what needs to be done!Summer mode: You’re out in the field, practically roasting alive, because your horse needs more fly spray. Of course, their fly rug is all bunched up, so you wrestle that back into place. Oh, and their fly mask? Gone. So now you’re on a treasure hunt across 30+ acres in blistering heat, knowing you can’t give up because, obviously, the world might end if you don’t find it.Winter mode: Now it’s survival time. You’re layered up in three coats, three pairs of socks, and gloves so thick you can barely bend your fingers. You’re hauling a hay bale like a pack mule because you know if your horse sees you empty-handed, you’ll be judged for life. And of course, they’ve activated dragon mode. 🐉By the time you make it halfway across the frosty field, you’re begging them to come to you – just this once. But no, every single horse in the field looks up… except yours. 🙄 So, the trek continues. Finally, they notice you. Relief, right? Wrong. They give you the “Oh no, there’s a puddle, I can’t possibly cross it!” look. So, now you’re hiking to them. As you slip and slide your way over, they casually walk past you – straight to the paddock where their hay is waiting. Oh, don’t mind me, I’m fine! 😤And just when you think you’re done, the other horse, who you assumed had followed, has somehow managed to detour all the way back across the field, crash through a ditch, and trot over to join their hay buffet. Meanwhile, you’re left standing in the middle of the field like the unpaid intern you are.Moral of the story? Horses will always keep you humble. 🐴💁‍♀️

Walking the course is your brain’s rehearsal before you head off into the ring. You’ve already got a plan on distances and turns but what happens when things don’t go to plan?

Are you ready to change your option in a split second?
Not so easy on the back of a horse like driving a car using Google Maps, so you’d best be prepared for plan B.

You can measure everything to an inch but horses being horses can put in the odd surprise but if you can sit tight, adjust your seat to stay anchored, stay soft in your hands, keep your legs on and the balance ⚖️ between horse & rider will adjust … and all of this can be done in a matter of moments, if you’re training is up to scratch because you’re already prepared.

Training gives you an edge, a preparation like no other tool can.💪🏼

Horse version, Never ever have I?
Give yourself one point for each one you haven't done, I'm expecting some people to score low.

1/ Bought tack and told your partner it was half-price.
2/ Fallen off your horse and been air lifted to hospital.
3/ Go to see one horse and return with two or more.
4/ Purchase a horse with a bank loan because its too good to miss.
5/ Breed your own foal.
6/Bought a horse of the same colour so your partner will not notice.
7/ Sleep in the stable overnight with a poorly horse.
8/ Pop and get an hours sleep in the wagon/trailer with a rug for bedspread.
9/Fall off at an event as you hadn't tightened your girth.
10/Tried to jump off and back on whilst in canter.
11/ Been out on a ride with friends and got lost.
12/ Gone to the pub on horseback.
13/ Lost toe nails due to horses standing on them.
14/ Broken bones due to falling off.
15/ Broke your heart due to losing one of your best pals.
16/ Gone swimming with your horse.
17/ Kept a horse until old age took them from you.
18/ Gone to the river to bath your horse in the summer.
19/ Took your horse on holiday.
20/ Met your partner or best friend through horses.

WHY I KEEP THE OLD HORSES

A young man stood in the entrance way to the stable trying to understand the connection with horses that his girlfriend seem obsessed with. As we chatted he hesitated for a moment before asking the question. "Why do you keep all these old horses?" he said. "They aren't being used anymore, why don't you take them to auction like other stables do?" he added. I smiled and looked out to the south. Trying to explain it isn't always about economics, I began my sermon.

"The ribbons may be faded, the applause silenced, but the memories of good rides and victory passes never leave." He cracked a smile as I went on. "Some of these horses I've bred, raised and trained. Many I have purchased. Some have been donated back to farm by their owners when they could no longer ride them. All have worked hard; all have trusted me with their welfare." I smiled back at him and then continued. "They are in fact an extension of myself. I care for them as I would like to be cared for." I went on. "Just because our bones are aged and some of us don't stride as easily or gracefully as our younger counterparts, we are wise." My visitor strained his ears to listen for more. "When they have aches and pains, I treat them. When they are tired, I rest them. And when I can no longer ease suffering, they are laid to rest by my veterinarian." I looked to the gravesite as I went on. "You see this horse business is an emotional business. It is unlike any other job you will have. These horses are a gift that are lent to us for a short time. We have a duty to care for them and not betray them. They have a history with humankind and I don't mean being displayed on a dinner plate." I continued with my sermon sadly acknowledging that the kill pen is the last stop for many unfortunate horses. "When you take on a horse, you take on a financial responsibility. It shouldn't be an impulsive purchase. You can never tire of it and throw the horse away when you are done with it." My visitor's face was softening as I pointed to a headstone. "I have a conscience that makes me at ease in my heart knowing my old friends have lived and passed on the lands they freely roamed and enjoyed. I gave them dignity in life and death and loved them all." As I turned back to face the young man, I noticed a small tear roll down his cheek. I think he got my message.
