This week's question.

Puppies, gnaw and bite.
There are three reasons why, can you name them?

21/01/2024

Really bad weather and strong winds.

Don't let your dogs in the garden unless you check your boundary fence first, or take them out in the garden on a lead. Better to be safe than sorry

WARNING, IF YOU HAVE PEDIGREE DENTASTICKS, THROW THEM AWAY NOW.

Just over two years ago, my dogs vet recommended we use the large Pedigree Dentastick once a week to help with her teeth.

Last year she had two fits, this year she has had 4 fits, and we can't work out why.

Until today..... I discovered that PEDIGREE DENTASTICKS contain TRIPOLYPHOSPHATE. Of which can cause seizures in dogs.

Please throw them out, and share this post far and ride. We need to get them off the shelfs

Monday was my very last day with Coco, after many years of walking her. She was a very nervous dog and I felt honoured that she allowed me to be part of her life.

September 2019 was when Coco first joined me on my walks, because she was such a nervous girl it took a couple of weeks, but eventually we became the best of friends. Visiting her on her lasts days were sad, but I was so happy to see her wag her tail and pick up when she saw me.

Coco's final walk was sadly alone, over the rainbow. She will be sadly missed, I'm glad her owner was with her and she wasn't alone when she passed.

She was so very special and I loved her so much and will never forget those precious eyes asking for "more treats"

Love you Coco rest in peace baby girl xx

So with a very heavy heart, I have to inform you that as of yesterday DEFRA has made the decision to ban XL BULLYS.

Our government is offering owners who don't want to keep their dog £200 to kill their dog. Unfortunately there are such alot of money grabbers out there that they will do this in a heat beat. These are the people who are responsible for things going wrong in the first place. So the government are lining these peoples pockets. (Understandably some will be good owners, that live in rented properties and will have no choice. For these owners talk to your landlord and find out what they have been told before you make that heartbreaking decision)

For the good XL owners out there, and you want to and are able to keep your dog, you can apply for an exemption certificate.

COST £92.40

EXEMPTION RULES are as follows

DOGS
muzzled and on lead at all times, by December 31st 2023

Kept in a secure garden.

Microchipped

All XL's to be neutered
Under a year old on January 31st 2024 ...must be done by 31st December 2024

If your dog is older than one year of age on January 31st 2024 ..... must be done by 30th June 2024.

If this is not done by the given dates you are owning an illegal dog and committing a criminal act.

OWNERS

must be over 16 years of age

take out insurance against your dog injuring other people - this is provided through Dogs Trust Membership

be able to show the Certificate of Exemption when asked by a police officer or a council dog warden, either at the time or within 5 days.

DOG WALKERS

can still walk XL Bully's, but they must be exempt and adhere to the same rules as the owners.

But incase of an accident, they will not beable to claim on their business insurance.

BREEDERS

It will be a criminal offence to breed XL Bully dogs from 31 December 2023. This includes:

breeding from an XL Bully dog

allowing for an XL Bully dog to be bred from any combination of other dogs

There is a 9-week period until the ban on selling comes into force to allow puppies that were bred before this legislation was introduced to be legally sold. It will remain the case that puppies must not be sold before they are eight weeks old.

If you purchased a puppy before 31 December 2023, but it is less than 8 weeks old at that point, you will still be able to collect it legally when it is eight weeks old.

RESCUES

From 31 December 2023, it will be illegal to rehome, sell or transfer ownership of XL Bully dogs. From this date rescue and rehoming centres should not rehome XL Bully dogs

If you are not sure whether a dog in your care may be considered an XL Bully, use the official definition of an XL Bully. Rescue and rehoming centres should consider whether the dogs in their care may be XL Bully dogs.

From 31 December 2023, it will be a criminal offence to rehome XL Bully dogs. However, it will be for rehoming centres to decide whether to apply to the Index for a Certificate of Exemption to keep these dogs, or to euthanise them.

Rescue and rehoming organisations will be able to claim a £100 contribution towards any euthanasia cost.

ABANDONED AND STRAY XL

From 31 December 2023, it will be illegal to abandon an XL Bully dog or allow it to stray.

If you find a stray or abandoned dog, you should contact your local council who are solely responsible under law for providing a stray dog service.

When we are pationate about our jobs it's always nice when people leave nice comments about how you helped them
BELOW IS FROM Ruth Brown . Thank you for your kind words and I'm glad I could help you and Joey

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Many thanks for the excellent training with Joey. Joey wore a muzzle but with Belinda's knowledgeable training Joey is a lot calmer meeting other dogs now and even brings himself back to me when he sees another dog. Joey is not perfect but is definitely showing improvement and will tolerate being closer to other dogs that we meet than he ever would before. Joey doesn't need to wear a muzzle anymore. Thank you Glapthorn Happy Pets from Joey and I 😀

G.H.P DOG TRAINING is offering free advice on muzzle training

Many people don't like muzzles for many reasons, which are.... it makes my dog look aggressive, my dog doesn't bite, they are cruel. I have even heard people say..... Dogs can't greath properly, muzzles make dog ill. My answer to this is.....a dog in pain can bite, so if a dog snaps at a vet they will muzzle your dog. A correctly fitted muzzle is not cruel. There are no illnesses caused by a dog wearing a muzzle, of course the dogs can breath, in a correctly fitted muzzles a dog can still drink and take treats. As for looking aggressive if that what people think then I know they will lead up near my dog, and give us space, that's a bonus in my opinion)

IF YOUR DOG HASCTO WEARVA MUZZLE FOR ANY REASON,
The Vet has asked the dog to be muzzled
The courts ask you to muzzle
Your dog becomes reactive
Or just through personal choice. (As is my dog, she's a greyhound with very sharp teeth, a big gentle girl who wouldn't hurt a thing, but I respect her bite capacity and I choose not to but her at risk, so 8 muzzle up. She is so used to her muzzle she waits for me to get it before 3ach walk and pops her head in it even before I'm ready.)

Putting a muzzle on a dog that isn't used to one is very stressful for the dog and can leadvto anxiety issues. So if asked in the vers for example, and your dog is ill prepared it will make the experience much worse for your dog.

You don't have to get a muzzle to teach your dog to wear one. Follow the instructions below for the beaker game, a great game to play with your dog. For any further advicecon muzzle training please ask
[email protected] or

WHAT YOU WILL NEED
Get yourself a plastic disposable beaker, big enough for your dog to get their nose in and beable to open their mouth a little bit.

1. Hold a treat infront of the beaker, when the dog touches the treat say, yes good boy and give him the treat. Repeat 10x

2. Place the treat inside of the beaker, holding the beaker flat and the treat resting on the side, when your dog reaches in for the treat say yes good boy they will help themselves to the treat inside, but still reward from out of the beaker. Repeat 10x

3. Keep moving the treat further towards the back of the beaker until you can pop it in and your dog can pop his nose in and keep in mind to mark what your dog has done and you good boy girl as a verbal reward and repeat 10x before you make it harder.

4. When your dog can put his nose in the beaker, now you can extend the time he keeps his nose in there. Do this by marking the length start with dog touches treat, wait 1 second then say yes, good boy and offer reward.
Then 2 seconds then 3 and so on. Always remember to mark with a yes at the end if the count.

If the head comes out no reward just try again. If your dog makes 2 mistakes go back a step ie 10 second is a struggle return to 9 and Repeat 10x before trying 10 again.

Hope you all find this useful and remember to make it fun.

There is obviously a lot of emotions right now around XL Bullies.

Draconian Dogs Act helps those who are affected by BSL - Breed Specific Legislation and have a free advice line should you need it.

Also I am copying Clair Litster-Huckle advice on what you can be doing if you own XL Bullies or those that may look similar

Clair has written 'At moment we don’t know what the plan for this ban is. But for my clients I am calming them and getting them prepared and being proactive.

Ensure all dogs are insured with a minimum of 3rd party cover, You can pay £25 a year to dogs trust for 3rd party cover.

Make sure microchips are working and information on the database is up to date.

Muzzle training.

Behaviour report - nothing emotive just how you have seen this dog behave in a number of different situations.

Neutering - not ideal sadly as we know how detrimental this can be.

None of this mitigates what may happen but the police and legal system will see that you are being responsible and it could speed up the process should your dog be typed.'
