So tiny...
It's a wee one! This young-of-year Eastern Red-Backed Salamander was among many dozen recently found during amphibian surveys at the Algonquin Wildlife Research Station. At less than 1 gram in weight this individual is small, but the sheer abundance of salamanders in the forests of eastern North America makes them mighty agents in nutrient cycling and forest health. Out-of-sight should not mean out-of-mind for these "little things that run the world" (E.O. Wilson 1987).
