Flame 🔥

I know I say it all the time. I can think of only approximately three clients that I would visit a lizard for so don’t ask me to do lizards/reptile visits. I am normally not your girl. However, Flame is very loved and I appreciate doing things for a client who appreciates me!

Extending a warm welcome to the PPP family to this sweet girl, Sasha! She’s so beautiful and a bit shy and scared! We were so pleased with how quickly she warmed up to me after a neighborhood walk (and some cheese 🧀) ♥️♥️♥️

Have you ever felt unsafe? If so, did you panic? Feel afraid? Feel unable to make good choices because your fear and anxiety were clouding your head? Did you just want to find a way to remove yourself from what made you feel uneasy?

Feeling safe is the most fundamental component to a dog's well being and happiness. It's so common to see a post of a dog who has been rescued and the post says "SAFE". Does the dog feel that way? We know they are safe, but do they?

If a dog does not feel safe, creating a healthy relationship with their human and their environment is going to be tough and you may see them communicating their anxiety in all kinds of ways. Often this communication gets mislabelled as bad behavior or even aggression, when in fact they are just saying "I don't feel safe with . . . (that person, that dog, that noise, that place, that experience, etc)". And, all too often, that behavior just leads them right back to the shelter or being passed to yet another home.

For so many dogs that find themselves displaced from their lives - the homes and families they knew, the stressful environment of a shelter or even the unfamiliar environment of a new home is enough to make them not feel "safe". It does not matter that we know they are with the best person on the planet. Do they know that? Have we taken the time to help them understand that in a way that is safe and supportive?

It is important for anyone who shares their lives with dogs - whether you work or volunteer with them, or just try to do what you can as a community member - to remember that helping a dog feel safe is the most crucial thing you can do and always where you start. So often we are in a rush to save lives that we forget that it's a life at the other end of that leash and we need to stop and pay attention to how they are coping.

We said this yesterday when we posted about a sad situation where a well meaning rescue got in over their head. And we're saying it again now. Rescue is so much more than simply saying "yes". There is real work involved and it begins the day they exit the shelter and enter your care. If you are going to pick up the leash and say "yes" it has become your responsibility to make sure that animal lands softly and well. And you begin by helping them feel safe.

The dog in this photo is Phoebe. She has lots of reason to struggle with feeling safe. She has significant separation anxiety, is experiencing skin issues that are uncomfortable (she has seen a vet and is being treated) and does not have alot of reason yet to trust that humans are going to listen to and help her. Feeling unsafe is not always about physical fears. Dogs can also experience emotional trauma that leaves them feeling unsafe. She needs stability, time, patience, love, understanding. If you think you might be able to offer that to Phoebe please reach out and let's chat about her.

Please help me extend a warm welcome to tiny dog Beau! Beau may be tiny but he definitely wanted to take a not so tiny bite out of me when I tried to harness him up for his walk.
🤣 Thank goodness I move quickly! He’s one scared little boy. Hoping to win him over and build his confidence!

Just a little appreciation post for my little boyfriend, Miso, who also happens to be Saki’s little brother. Miso is the sweetest, most sensitive boy who would literally crawl into my skin if he could especially in the morning which is his favorite time to cuddle! It’s hard on him when Saki is away at her appointments fighting cancer so we’ve had a lot of time to hang out together to keep him company! So glad his mama knows what’s needed and provides that for everyone!

Also, I mean really?! What could be better than that flowing hair and those eyelashes??!

Vital info for our furry friends’ safety!!

It's Fireworks season folks and already the lost dog posts are exploding. Please share this everywhere so we can help pet parents avoid an avoidable tragedy.

REMEMBER your backyard is not a secure space for your dog if:

- they are afraid of fireworks
- they are newly adopted and skittish
- they are a curious/adventurous dog who is also an escape artist
- you have gardeners, utility workers or constructions workers coming into the yard (these things are generally scheduled so keep your dog indoors or a secure kennel on those days).

If any of the above conditions applies to you, just play it safe and keep your dog securely indoors - especially on July 4th!

Green-eyed boy Princey was happy to see a human this morning! He tried to convince me he’d been left alone for years but I absolutely know how much his pawrents love him and exactly when they left (2 hours before). Nice try, buddy! You did get some nice ear rubs and treats though because you’re just irresistible like that! Love you, Princey!

“Rescue dogs are truly remarkable! They overcome extreme obstacles and are incredibly resilient.

The possibilities are endless, but most of all, they are love in the purest form and it is hard to imagine a more loyal, worthy companion. “
