“Love and knowledge are the only things that grow stronger the more you share them.”

This principle drives everything we do in the TreeClix Specialist Program (TSP). We’re already halfway through, and the feedback has been incredible! Participants are telling us that the knowledge gained so far is already making a real difference in their saddle fitting work.

One participant said: “The TreeClix Specialist Program has been set up so clearly, and it provides exactly the kind of information that’s missing in many training programs for saddle fitters.”

Another shared: “This training is all-encompassing and very comprehensive. Even for me, as an experienced saddle fitter, there are those ‘Aha’ moments! It’s a must-have for any saddle fitter who takes their work seriously.”

What’s covered in the program?

The TSP focuses on practical, essential skills for saddle fitters, including:

- Anatomy & movement of the horse: Understanding the horse’s body and how the right saddle supports movement.
- Saddle design basics: A deep dive into saddle components and their effects on the horse and rider.
- Measurable Parameters: Key data like twist width and tree point length to ensure precise saddle fit.
- Key Fitting Points: How to focus on the four key areas to make a real difference.
- Rider-Horse-Saddle interaction: Understanding the interaction between these elements and where your responsibility begins and ends.
- Common saddle fitting problems: Tackling real challenges and finding practical solutions.
- TreeClix in action: How to make accurate adjustments using TreeClix in real-world saddle fitting.

With video tutorials, practical assignments, and bi-weekly online meetings, this program integrates seamlessly into your daily saddle fitting work. Expect to spend about 3-4 hours per week and join in on valuable group discussions where everyone shares insights and experiences. 🗣️

As we continue to share knowledge and love for saddle fitting, we’re growing stronger together.

When fitting a saddle, it’s important to understand how a horse’s body supports weight and moves. We can look at a horse’s back as being made up of two main types of structures: 𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘇𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀, which can carry weight, and 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀, which are important for movement and stability.

𝙃𝙤𝙧𝙞𝙯𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙖𝙡 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙡 𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙪𝙘𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚𝙨
- 𝗛𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘇𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀 like the ribcage and the m. longissimus dorsi (a large and thick back muscle).
- 𝗩𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀, such as the spine, the shoulder blade (scapula), and some muscles and ligaments. They help the horse move, move the scapula, keep the spine stable, and support the neck.

𝙒𝙝𝙮 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙞𝙨 𝙞𝙢𝙥𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙖𝙣𝙩 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙨𝙖𝙙𝙙𝙡𝙚 𝙛𝙞𝙩𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜
A saddle must place the rider’s weight only on the horizontal structures. These are strong and able to support weight. The vertical structures should not carry weight because they are needed for movement. If a saddle puts weight on these vertical structures in front, it can stop the horse from moving properly. This can cause discomfort, pain, or even long-term problems.

𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙖𝙧𝙚𝙖: 𝙖 𝙨𝙥𝙚𝙘𝙞𝙖𝙡 𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙣𝙜𝙚
The wither area is a unique and sensitive part of the horse’s back. In this area, the bony parts of the spine (spinous processes) are longer than in other regions of the back. These vertical structures are crucial for attaching muscles and ligaments that help the horse move and stay balanced.

If the saddle applies too much pressure in the wither area, it can cause discomfort and restrict the horse’s movement. A good saddle should provide enough space around the withers to avoid this pressure and keep the horse comfortable. This requires tree points that are long enough to ensure the saddle loads on the horizontal structures, along with the correct tree width.

𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙜𝙤𝙖𝙡 𝙤𝙛 𝙨𝙖𝙙𝙙𝙡𝙚 𝙛𝙞𝙩𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜
By understanding the difference between horizontal and vertical structures, we can make sure that saddles are fitted correctly. The saddle should put weight only where the horse can safely carry it. This helps the horse move freely, stay comfortable, and perform at its best.

🐴 A story about a mare and her saddle pad!

I’m not against using correction pads; some horses genuinely benefit from them, especially those with underdeveloped muscle in their backs and around their withers. However, I am always cautious with pad use, as they don’t automatically improve saddle fit.

A couple of months ago, we organized a TreeClix masterclass in the Netherlands with a wonderful group of saddle fitters. As is our practice, we invited several horse and rider combinations to ride for us, allowing us to test various TreeClix settings and observe how different horses responded.

One particular case stood out to me: a lovely mare who was ridden in a dressage saddle that had:

- Tree points that were slightly too short for this particular horse
- Tree width that was more than 5 cm too wide

After TreeClix adjustments, we were able to:

- Lengthen the tree points somewhat
- Narrow the tree width by 3.5 cm using the maximum wedge size

The rider shared that her mare normally took quite a while to warm up each time she rode, often feeling sluggish at the start. After the above mentioned adjustments, the mare moved more freely and found it easier to canter. However, as the saddle was still 2 cm too wide, we tried adding a correction pad to fill this gap. Interestingly enough the mare's performance actually worsened. We could not only see this, we could also hear it. And the rider felt that the horse was a bit slower, downhill and less responsive to her aids.

This highlights an important point:

- While pads can be beneficial for some horses—especially those with underdeveloped muscle in their backs and around their withers—excessive padding can lead to instability.
- Excessive pads can also cause the rider to sit further away from the horse's back, limiting both comfort and performance.

Of course we sent the rider home with the message that she would need to be looking for a saddle that would better suit her horse, but the adjustment with TreeClix meant that she could at least keep training her horse a little so it would stay in shape to have a new saddle fitted.

✨ Happy 2025! ✨

Looking back on 2024, I feel so grateful. It was a year full of big decisions and exciting changes! I stopped working as a full-time saddle fitter to focus more on my other businesses, and it’s been the right choice. Now, I can do what I love most: helping saddle fitters improve saddle fit for horses and riders.

One big highlight was starting the **TreeClix Specialist Program** in December. Seeing the first groups get started has been amazing!

We also hosted three webinars: one in Dutch, one in English, and one in German for saddle fitters. On top of that, we organized two Dutch masterclasses and two fantastic sessions in France with . We also reorganized the webshop with new products, and hearing how much easier it is to use now made it all worth it!

In 2025, we’ll continue with the TreeClix Specialist Program (there are still a few spots left for the groups that start in March!) and bring you more webinars and masterclasses. The first webinar of the year is coming in February, so keep an eye on our website and social media.

Thank you for all your support this year. Let’s make 2025 even better! 🎉

Train your eye! As you can see, the balance of this saddle is backward. It’s a common misconception to solve this “problem” by widening the tree. However, this saddle is actually set to the correct width (even slightly wider, in fact). Yet, the balance of the saddle remains backward.

What do you think might be the reason for this? Let us know in the comments! We’ll post a few reels about this topic over the next couple of weeks. Keep an eye on our socials!
