In saddle fitting, thereâs often concern about saddles with slightly curved trees, with many believing that this could cause the saddle to rock and become unstable. However, we need to rethink this! ð
ð Hereâs what we should really focus on:
1. ð¡ðŒð ð·ððð ððœð¶ð»ð² ððµð®ðœð² but also the ðºððð°ð¹ð²ð determine what shape of tree you need! In this case the spine might seem straight, but if we look at the muscles (where the saddle lies) it slopes down a bit. This might cause a straight tree to have the balance backwards.
Also, a little space and movement under the back of the tree isnât necessarily a bad thingâit can help the horse move more freely, as long as the panels and saddle balance support this shape. ðð²ðð®ð¿ð² ð³ðŒð¿ ð²ð

2. ð§ðð¶ðð ðªð¶ð±ððµ ð ð®ððð²ð¿ð: With curved trees, especially, itâs crucial to have enough width in the twist so the horseâs spine has room when they lift their back. A too-narrow twist (which we often see with curved trees) can make the saddle unstable.
3. ð ð®ðžð² ððð¿ð² ððµð² ðð¿ð²ð²ðð¶ðð² ð¶ð ðð²ð ð°ðŒð¿ð¿ð²ð°ðð¹ð: every wide tree will be unstable. Although you might notice this faster with a slightly curved tree, this doesnât mean you should avoid a curve if the horse actually needs it!

When Mandy first got Noa, she was a petite, young horse just starting out. Thanks to our TreeClix system, her saddle has grown with her as she developed muscles and matured. From 35mm wedges to just 10mm today, TreeClix has allowed her saddle to adapt perfectly to her changing shape.
For the future we expect Noa to become a little smaller again around the withers, as her posture becomes more upright with the withers coming more out. ðªð

During our recent TreeClix masterclass in the Netherlands this August, we worked with some interesting horse-and-rider pairs. One of them was Annabel and her lovely mare. Letâs be honestâbeing a saddlefitter is no easy task! Itâs not just about fitting a saddle; itâs about understanding the horseâs biomechanics, having a sharp eye for whatâs right, and communicating all that with the rider, who may have their own (sometimes mistaken) opinions.
Saddle fitters know how much effort it takes to get the perfect fit for your horse. Thatâs why weâre here to help make things a bit easier (and cheaper) with TreeClix.

Jannekeâs first impression of her horse Sjef wasnât too positive. But after a while the connection came and she decided he could stay. Thatâs when she had her saddle fitter Jeanette from @zadel_en_zorg fit them a @harrydabbssaddlemakers jump saddle. Of course with TreeClix.
Sjef, a nine-year-old Zangersheide, has developed stable musculature and overall build. But he fluctuates a bit in weight and shape over the year, as does every horse. Janneke appreciates that her saddle fitter can easily make small adjustments with TreeClix in his saddle. The advantage of TreeClix is that it allows for ongoing adjustments, so youâre not locked into a final result.
While some saddle trees can only be adjusted a few times before reaching their limit, TreeClix offers a more flexible option. Janneke says, âI preferred another option, and TreeClix provided that, so I am very happy with it.â

This interview was conducted some time ago and in light of recent developments regarding horse welfare and the way our sport is portrayed in the media, I want to delve deeper into this topic and provide more insight into my thoughts.
I truly believe there is a future for our sport, but it relies on our commitment to improving how we handle horses and address their welfare. Unfortunately, what Iâm seeing is a troubling amount of hostility among those who should be working together for the betterment of horse welfare.
In the saddle fitting industry, Iâve observed a concerning trend. Many professionals seem more focused on selling additional products or services rather than genuinely addressing the needs of the horse. For instance, some still measure tree sizes incorrectly, like over the shoulder bladesâclearly not where we should be measuring. Others, even when aware of the correct methods, opt for shortcuts because theyâre quicker or cheaper, often at the expense of the horseâs comfort. This approach, coupled with the reluctance to acknowledge when a saddle simply cannot be adjusted to fit properly, is problematic.
Moreover, thereâs a significant number of saddle fitters and riders who fail to recognize when a horse is lame or otherwise unfit to ride. This issue extends beyond the top levels of sport and reflects a broader need for improvement at every level.
The recent controversy around the Olympic games and similar stories has brought horse welfare to the forefront of public discussion. Yet, real change often starts on a smaller, more personal level. We need to collaborate, admit our mistakes, and avoid pitting customers against each other based on past treatments or opinions.
Letâs work together, focus on whatâs best for the horses, and make meaningful changes in our practices. Itâs time for us to b

I know I am convinced about TreeClix, but itâs certainly good to hear riders also feel the difference whenever I change the TreeClix setting in their saddle. U25 dressage rider @quintyvossers rides her horse with different saddle brands, but all of them have TreeClix in it.
In this interview she tells why she thinks it is important her saddles are adjustable. And we couldnât agree more! As we train our horse they change shape (most of the times the become narrower around the withers, because we train them to activate their thoracic sling muscles). And a saddle needs to be able to follow these changes!

ð Working as a saddlefitter isnât easy⊠ð
Weâve all been thereârevisiting customers because their horses have issues again, even after a recent check. Itâs frustrating and exhausting. I know these struggles all too well, because I used to face the same challenges.
For me everything changed when I started working with a brand that had me open the saddles, measure the treepoint length and treesize, and set it to the right size. Suddenly, I could predict and achieve the desired results consistently. Whenever the horse changed and I adjusted the saddle again to the measurements, it would actually work again. Knowing how to find the problem and knowing how to fix it is fantastic.
Can you relate? What are your struggles or tips? Let us know in the comments!

Meet, Sander Gepkens, a saddlefitter from the Netherlands. Heâs a real pro when it comes to fitting saddles for horses. We had this nice chat with him back in November 2023 during our Dutch TreeClix Masterclass.
Sander explained to us how TreeClix is a game-changer for him when saddle fitting, especially for those saddles with wooden trees that otherwise are non-adjustable. With TreeClix he can adjust his customersâ saddles when necessary, so the whole âyour saddle doesnât fit anymoreâ story is becoming less and less common.
So happy we can help Sander with making his job as a saddlefitter easier and more enjoyable!

Hereâs my opinion: you canât fit a saddle properly without opening it to check the tree and the inside. Iâve seen all sorts of things, protruding bolts, saddle nails sticking out. Even with a thick pad underneath, the horse feels it. And when you adjust it, the horse literally moves better. So, it pays off to open a saddle and take the time to check the inside!
