We don’t see them as pets, that’s an animal right activist claim. Claiming that people who have big cats under their care, have them as pets, is an animal right activist claim. Not everyone has big cats under their care but the ones that do, which is not many, don’t see them and treat them as pets (like a dog or a cat). This is a false claim.

Also, Tiger King is an animal right activist documentary, it’s not legit. It didn’t put a spotlight on the treatment of big cats, It only put a spotlight on garbage. It did however further expose Carole Baskin which was the only good thing about it. Why is this big cat abuser and murder still walking among us? Why do you praise and support her?

Thank you Tiger World for already roaring your opposition about this personal agenda, unethical, and unconstitutional act. Keep causing an uproar. This fight isn’t over. They will not take away the lives of big cats, livelihoods, jobs, and our future. This personal agenda, unethical, and unconstitutional act will be amended.

A Rowan County Zoo is voicing its opposition to a bill that would put restrictions on big cats.

Unfortunately the Senate has approved the Big Cat Public Safety Act. This will affect many small facilities who use volunteers. We will continue to push for trained volunteers and inters to be able to participate in the husbandry and care of big cats in a zoological settings.

Our boys and girls enjoy the view from their backyard of our small herd of longhorns. We are asked often if we raise our own meat; no, we do not. We manage the tremendous amount of beef we feed every week through the generosity of local farmers. We are happy to give that cow or bull a purpose by feeding our tigers; we take care of all the butchering ourselves with just a couple of knives.

Fresh beef with some organs, hide and bones to promote healthy activity, supplemented with vitamins and fish oil - nothing but the best! One of the many behind-the-scenes responsibilities we undertake to give our animals the retirement they deserve.

“You don't tug on Superman's cape
You don't spit into the wind
You don't pull the mask off that old Lone Ranger
And you don't take lunch away from Diego.”

OK, we may not be the best lyricists but it’s good advice nonetheless! 🌲🐅🐾🐂🥩🦴

Zuri said forget about all the others and - she is the queen! Who could possibly argue that? 🐅🐆🐈🐾

Happy to you and your furry friends! We have 12 of the big guys and girls that call Growler Pines Tiger Preserve home. A few fun cat facts for you on this striped (or spotted, or solid) day.

🐾 There are seven species of big cats - lions, tigers, jaguars, leopards, snow leopards, clouded leopards and Sunda clouded leopards - and 33 species of small wild cats.

🐾 Only lions, tigers, leopards and jaguars are capable of roaring because of a bone in the voice box replaced by a ligament. That same bone in small cats is what enables them to purr - something those other four species can’t do!

🐾 Five subspecies of tigers survive in the wild - Bengal, Amur, Malayan, Indochinese and Sumatran. North China tigers only exists in human care. Three subspecies are completely extinct - the Caspian, Javan and Bali.

🐾 Bhutan is the only country in the world where leopards, snow leopards and tigers share habitat.

🐾 The Indian state of Gurajat is the only place in the world to have lions, tigers and leopards sharing habitat.

We did a bit of landscaping and “furniture” moving in our new South Habitat for the tigers to enjoy. The boys sure enjoyed having new hiding spots and something more to sink their claws!

Our current public tour schedule continues through the end of the month at 1:30 on Fridays, 11:00 and 1:30 Saturdays and 1:30 on Sundays. We begin to cut back into September through November. Private tours and field trip opportunities are always available as well though! Book your reservations at https://growlerpines.com/book-your-tour/ 🌲🐅🐾🌲

Mirage says it’s her toy and she’s not going to share! A common question we receive is if people can pet the tigers. That’s a big no.

1) Public contact with an adult big cat is illegal by federal regulation. No reason for us to tarnish our fantastic record! 📄💯💪
2) Looking is free - touching would cost you an arm and a leg! 🐅🦴😵

Tigers are the largest species of big cats in the world but how big is big? It depends on their genetics! Male tigers grow larger and mature later than females, typically reaching full size by the age of five. An adult male Amur tiger can reach nearly 700 pounds while an adult Sumatran tiger typically won’t weigh more than about 300 pounds.

Two of our boys, 8-year-old brothers Zeus and Diego, weigh 400 and 460 pounds each, respectively. They have very different body types and we have to manage their diets accordingly. Diego is quick to put on weight and hard to drop it; Zeus is the opposite! 16-year-old Faber differs as well and we have made accommodations to his needs as we brought he and his girls back to health earlier this year after their arrival.

It is important to maintain healthy weights for our animals, not only to maintain their active lifestyle and training but to prevent health problems as they age.

has been a day of celebration and activity for us for many years. It was eight years ago today we began teaching Zuri to finger paint and sharing our mission of with school groups visiting the circus big top in their hometown. Six years ago, we began our fundraising campaigns to support river patrols in Sumatra’s Way Kambas National Park, a new endeavor supported solely by our big cats in cooperation with the International Elephant Foundation. Four years ago, we held the first of our two annual fundraisers “An Evening with Tigers” when we doubled our annual pledge to the IEF to help with the restart of patrols in the Sumatra’s Seblat Nature Park. Two years ago, the IEF reached out to us and asked for our support in helping begin a new project, mitigating human-tiger conflict in Nepal’s Bardia National Park.

To date, our big cat family has raised and donated more than $45,000 in support of wild tiger habitat protection and conservation projects across Asia. Today is a worldwide day to raise awareness about the plight of wild tiger populations and habitat, but that is what we do everyday. We are proud to have our m tigers lending a paw to help protect wild tigers that do not have the same luxuries as the guarantees of food, shelter, protection, love and affection.

25/12/2022

DID YOU KNOW? In 2010, 13 tiger range countries pledged to double their tiger population by 2022. While progress has been made by many, only Nepal was successful in this effort and even exceeded their goal! With a count of 133 tigers 12 years ago, the recent census shows 355 tigers this year. However, this growing population of apex predators brings the threat of conflict as people and animals compete for the same space. Nepal is quickly approaching its tiger capacity though and an average of three people are killed every month by wild tigers.

We are working to have a direct impact on the mitigation of human-tiger conflict in Nepal’s Bardia National Park. In cooperation with the International Elephant Foundation, our tigers help to raise funds for public education campaigns to learn how to safely coexist with tigers in their own backyards and well as the purchase of camera traps to monitor local tiger movement. Growler Pines Tiger Preserve donates every month a portion of proceeds from admissions and souvenirs toward this project, proudly having our tigers lending a paw to help protect wild tigers that do not have the same luxuries as the guarantees of food, shelter, protection, love and affection.

Zeus is one of our beautiful tigers you will meet during a visit. He and his brother Diego joined our family in November 2014 at four months old. They were just little guys back then but both are now well over 400 pounds each.

White tigers occurred naturally in the wild in India with records of them there dating back to the 1500s. The last was killed almost 70 years ago. They are the result of a recessive trait, just like people with blue eyes!

We talk a lot about and help to dispel some of the oft-repeated hate rhetoric about these beautiful animals. WhiteTigerTruths.Wordpress.com always has some incredible information based on facts and detailed research.

Long have we shared that white tigers originated in India with detailed records dating back to the 1500s but two years of new research show over 1500 years of white tiger sightings in China and Korea as well!

It is truly sad an animal with such a long and magical history garners so much hate in the present as many in the United States push for their extinction completely.

“They dismiss the notion that the white tiger trait is a genetic deformity. That matured white tiger adults have been sighted in the wild negates this notion. Despite its low frequency, they emphasise that the mutation is a naturally occurring one and should be considered as a “part of genetic diversity of tigers that is worth conserving.”

Cats will be cats, no matter what size! Our kitty toys are definitely comprable though. Zuri loves her scratching post to keep those claws nice and sharp. Clawing on trees is a natural behavior tigers exhibit to mark their territory by utilizing scent glands between the toes. 🌲🐅🐾🌳

Tabby tigers, like our 3-year-old Amara, are “redheads” of the tiger world. This natural variation is called erythrism, the opposite of white tigers due to an overproduction of red pigment and an absence of black pigment. Tabby tigers are harder to identify in historical records but they too were native to India like white tigers. One was just photographed in the Kaziranga National Park a few years ago!

DINNER IS SERVED! 3-year-old Amara (and all our boys and girls) are blessed to enjoy a lot of fresh beef donated by local farmers in Hugo and Choctaw County. A direct path from the pasture to the plate, figuratively speaking. We are very thankful to be a part of our community and are blessed for the support we receive to satiate the appetites of a dozen big cats!

As requested by our supporters in celebration of our new “Adopt a Tiger” program and the arrival of our new retirees the Faber Four, we are showcasing the amazing individuals that gave us cause to create Growler Pines Tiger Preserve.

9 year old Zuri needs no introduction. She is the star, the favorite, the Chosen One, the princess... you get the idea. Zuri was the first to join our original group of five tigers in 2013. If one were to tell us then that we would build the relationship we developed with her over the years, we would have been incredulous. It took a lot of time and patience to build the level of trust and cooperation we cherish. She is of course the star of our tiger finger painting, taking the place of Zeya with her unending patience. Everyone always enjoys a laugh watching her grate the back of my neck with her rasp tongue or drooling down the side of my face. As we have continued to bring in additional tigers to our group over the years, Zuri acts as our rock when teaching new animals to transition their new trained behaviors from individually to alongside another. God broke the mold when he made this tiger.

13-year-old Mirage is one of our two new white tigers enjoying their retirement at Growler Pines Tiger Preserve. She has an incredibly assertive personality and is always paying attention to her surroundings! Like all white tigers, she carries the recessive trait that blocks red and yellow pigment. This trait originated in India where records of white tigers in the wild date back to the 1500s. Mirage’s new name was inspired by a character from the 1990’s television series Aladdin (one based on an Egyptian cat-like goddess) which we have been watching as family in the evenings after our day is done. Both personalities are similar, making it much more rewarding that Mirage is beginning to greet us with more chuffs and less indignation each morning!
