Dr. Warren J. Hess, DVM, epitomizes a unique career trajectory in Emergency Veterinary Medicine & Disaster Response. After graduating from Colorado State University in 1989, he honed his skills in small animal practice before transitioning to pivotal roles at the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food. With early involvement in organized veterinary medicine, including the presidency at UVMA.
Dr. Hess led various state and national organizations, notably NASAAEP. Recognized as Veterinarian of the Year (2014), he embodies resilience and leadership in crisis management. His journey underscores the need for diverse skills, from clinical expertise to strategic leadership, for aspiring veterinarians in this critical field.

Dear IVSA Members,

A policy paper is a document that presents analysis, recommendations, and proposed solutions to address a specific issue or problem within a particular context. It aims to inform policymakers, stakeholders, and the general public about the issue at hand and to influence decision-making processes.

Learning to write policy papers is vital for veterinary students. Firstly, it equips them with the tools to advocate for crucial issues like animal welfare and public health, influencing policymakers and stakeholders. Secondly, it fosters critical thinking and research skills through in-depth analysis and evidence-based recommendations. Lastly, mastering policy writing nurtures students' professional development, preparing them for leadership roles and advocacy within the veterinary profession, enhancing communication and advocacy skills essential for diverse career paths.

"Gratitude to our esteemed panelists, Dr. Deborah Aronson, Gabriella Grande, DVM and Zuzanna Czekaj, DVM for their insightful contributions to our discussion on euthanasia in veterinary practice.

As a short recap of our event,
- Dr. Deborah shared valuable insights into the animal welfare aspect and procedure of euthanasia, illustrating her points with a poignant example of Nova Dog.
- Gabriella, DVM, enlightened us on the importance of wellness for veterinarians and students, emphasizing effective communication with pet owners.
- Zuzanna, DVM, drawing from her recent graduate experience, bravely shared her insights and emotions about her first contact with euthanasia, both from a new grade and a student perspective, and talked about veterinary education on this topic.
