Another customer favorite, Swedish Ducks! This breed is admired for their striking appearance and gentle temperament, as well as their exceptional hardiness and versatility.

A fun historical fact about Swedish ducks is that they have been raised in Sweden for centuries, with records dating back to the 19th century. The breed was developed from a mix of native Swedish ducks and imported breeds, such as the Rouen and the Mallard. Historically, Swedish ducks were highly valued for their meat and eggs, and they became a staple on farms throughout the country. Interestingly, during the 20th century, the breed nearly faced extinction, but dedicated breeding efforts helped bring the Swedish duck back, preserving it as a unique and important part of Sweden’s agricultural heritage.

Swedish ducks are a “dual-purpose” breed, meaning they can be raised both for their eggs and for their meat. This made them particularly valuable to farmers in Sweden, where resources were often limited, and having a breed that could serve multiple purposes was essential for sustainability. While they are still raised for both eggs and meat today, Swedish ducks are especially popular among small-scale and backyard farmers due to their calm demeanor, efficient foraging abilities, and attractive coloring.

Swedish ducks are also known for their impressive cold tolerance, which made them well-suited for the harsh Scandinavian winters. Their dense feathers and insulating down help keep them warm even in freezing temperatures. Historically, this resilience to cold weather was a key factor in their survival and popularity on farms in Sweden, where winters can be long and severe.

📷: It sounds like Louise R. who submitted this great photo would agree! ❄️ She says, “We’ve found Swedish are very hardy even in Iowa’s extreme weather. We got the duck in the middle from Metzer 13 years ago! Smokey is turning white but she’s still perfectly healthy.”

Do you have a Swedish duck in your flock? Share a fact or a photo below!!

The African goose originated from the wild Asian Swan Goose of China. It was introduced into Europe in the late 1700s and into the USA in the mid 1800s. The original Lion Head breed of goose in China is the same shape and coloration as our African geese. How these geese from China got the name African has always been puzzling. Apparently, it was usual to apply the term "Guinea" to anything foreign and of uncertain origin. As Guinea is off the coast of Africa, it appears the African goose got its name in a similar way.
In northern climates, it is recommended the African geese be provided shelter as their k***s have a tendency to become frostbitten if not given sufficient protection from the cold. If the k**b is frostbit, spots may turn orange but then the k**b returns to black once the tissue is completely healed the following year. African geese are similar to Chinese geese in that they are a bit noisier than other breeds. They are a beautiful goose and are very active foragers. They are good egg producers with above average fertility. There are two recognized breeds of colored geese from China, the African and Brown Chinese Geese. Our African are midsized between these two and are a very common goose. If you want the larger, show-type African goose with a pronounced dewlap, you want our Super African Geese.

For a comparison of this breed with all other breeds in traits such as egg production, temperament, weeding and mothering ability, go to Our Breed Comparison chart.

Are you looking for a new addition to your flock? Call Ducks might be the answer for you. At Metzer Farms, we offer healthy Call Ducklings for sale. This duck breed is perfect for anyone seeking the joy of pet duck ownership. Call Ducks are ideal for the hobbyist that wants beautiful and charming ducks but has little space.

At Metzer Farms, we have a spectrum of Call Duck breeds & colors, ensuring you'll find the perfect match for your preferences. We have seven different colors of Call Ducklings that you can choose from: Black, Blue, Gray, Pastel, Penciled, Snowy and White.

The exact origins of Call Ducks is debatable, but it is believed they were developed in the Netherlands in the 17th or 18th century. They were initially bred to lure or “call” wild ducks into traps or nets. The small size and loud quacking of Call Ducks made them effective decoys. Hunters used them to attract wild ducks closer, making it easier to catch wild waterfowl for food and sport.

Please note, Call Ducks can fly very well. Historically Call Ducks have been bred with short, wide heads (brachycephalic) and short bills. Here at Metzer Farms, we are not going to stray from the APA guidelines, but we aim to breed a naturally shaped duck - just much smaller. We feel this will allow them to be more productive in terms of fertility, longevity and hatchability.

Any breed can be in the mixed selection - from the common Pekin to the rare Silver Appleyard. You can request sexes for the mixed duckling, but not breeds.

At Metzer Farms, we are committed to delivering excellence in every aspect of duck farming. Our female and male Khaki Campbell ducks, known for their distinctive khaki-colored plumage and vibrant personalities, will complement your breeding program perfectly. Whether you're starting a backyard flock or expanding your farm operation, our Khaki Campbell ducks are guaranteed to exceed your expectations.

The Khaki Campbell duck breed is one of the more famous and popular duck breeds due to its excellent egg production. It was introduced in 1901 by Mrs. Adele Campbell of Gloucestershire, England. She experimented with Runners crossed with Rouen and Mallards but never revealed the exact genetic makeup of her Campbells. The advantage over the pure Runner was a more useful carcass for meat and improved egg production. Though they have been turned into an exhibition type breed, she was adamant that her birds were designed for production, not the exhibition hall.

Explore our selection of Khaki Campbell ducks today and experience the difference quality breeding makes. Join countless satisfied customers who trust Metzer Farms for superior ducks and exceptional service.
