Story Time 🥰

Once upon a time... There was a little dog in the shelter. She didn't have a family and didn't like other dogs. On a Sunny Saturday, she went to a pup party for adoption... and that is where she met her new mom.

She went home with her soon to be mom not knowing what to expect. Nervous and scared she made her way into the house. She didn't like the dog there and thought the hoomans were chew toys. She even pottied all over the fluffy carpet.

Not knowing if she was going to stay she continued to Think Pawsitive. Mom and family continued to help her through some of the tough times. And now after 2 weeks it was time to decide if she was going to stay.

We believed in her and she believed in us. We now have an amazing little Willow in our lives. She overcame tough times through consistent training and is now happy as can be.

Never give up on your puppy, learn what training styles work for them. Be sure to hang in there through the tough times. Just because someone gave up on Willow doesn't mean we ever will. 🥰

With all the holiday cheer let's not forget that our furbabies need to be brushed and groomed regularly.

My Pitbull has a really short coat and she actually needs to be brushed more than my German shepherd husky mix.

I was actually surprised when I found that out. But grooming her spreads oils through out her coat and it also helps remove dirt.

Not sure what brush to use....No worries, I know there are a lot on the market, but this one is the cream of the crop. It gave me the best of both worlds, especially since I have 2 dogs with COMPLETELY different coats.

Here is Leonardo our German Shephard Husky Mix Loving his Groom Time. I also use the same brush on my Pitbull Willow. They both have two different coats and we just simply switch out the brush heads.

Another example of just how much they can love being brushed.

TIPS TO DOG BRUSHING

Truth is mine were not that thrilled in the beginning. They would run away from the brush or just bite it until I gave up.

After I did some research, I found that this is something that I could easily remedy.

Through Desensitization and Positive Conditioning...and an actual good brush 🤣Shameless plug >> https://myplandog.com/5-in-1-dog-grooming-brush ) I was able to start my journey.

I first began with letting my dogs sniff the brush and reward them for being calm/curious.

I then started to lightly touch them with the brush and reward them when they let me touch them without resistance.

Finally, I did small and light strokes and rewarded them when they let me do that without resistance.

This all happened within a course of 30 minutes. Granted it took a lot of patience and persistence on my end. But now my dogs know that brush time means they are getting love and not punished. 😊

🤔 Most people don’t think about these things, but they are just as important if not more important to complete prior to teaching basic commands like, “Sit, Stay, Down, Drop it, and heel”.

It is never too early to get your puppy used to it’s environment and to start handling your pup.

When I say get them used to their environment, I don’t just mean your home. I’m talking about getting them out in the world. Expose them to other dogs, car rides, different noises, and other humans.

👉 Another key thing to get your dog used to is handling. This will come in handy all through your pup’s life when they have to go to the vet, get groomed, or even just to teach them that it is ok to be touched.

👍👍 A great way to practice this is through daily brushing sessions that will get them used to being touched. This is something that you want to be a good experience, so be sure to use patience, take it slow, expose them to the brush, and treat them when they allow you to brush them without resistance.

You see when I got our second pup from the humane society, (Pitbull) Willow, our adult dog (German Shepherd/Husky) Leo was not having it. They fought so much we had to keep them separated, Willow would also freak out and use my family as a chew toy, additionally she was not potty trained. We were super close to ending the foster period PRIOR to end date. I tell you this only to let you know, that it IS possible to turn those behaviors around.

Now Willow is an irreplaceable part of our family. She has learned all the proper behaviors, and even snuggles with our older dog. I realized that even though I already had one dog, that our second dog had a completely unique personality and set of needs of her own. Not only did they have different hair and skin needs, but they also like different kinds of toys, attention, and behavioral issues.

And that is when I decided to start My Plan Dog.
