Just a friendly reminder of what effective control is!

I had another lovely experience with a group of women that thought it was okay to let their dog run over while I was training two dogs, when I politely asked her to call her dog she then decided it was a great idea to come to my face and tell me her dog can say hello because itโ€™s an off leash beach and if I donโ€™t like it donโ€™t come.

Iโ€™m sorry but that is not the case, just because itโ€™s an off leash beach that doesnโ€™t equal my dog can run upto anyone it likes.

What if the dog i was training was an assistant dog?

What if the dog I was training had aggression?

What if the dog i was training was scared of other dogs?

What if the dog I was training reactive?

What if the dog i was training had anxiety?

What if the dog in training was sick?

What if the dog in training had an injury?

What if the dog in training isnโ€™t social?

What do you get out of stressing other owners and dogs? Please ask yourself that the next time you go to an off leash area and in your mind that means let my dog do what it likes!

We have a few hot days ahead ๐Ÿฅต,
Why we wonโ€™t operate when itโ€™s 30ยฐ and over?

Heatstroke is a highly fatal syndrome, caused by elevated core body temperature, where intrinsic and extrinsic heat production exceeds the capability of the heat dissipation mechanisms. In dogs it is characterized by core temperatures above 41ยฐC (105.8ยบF), with central nervous system dysfunction.1,15,50 It results from exposure to a hot, often highly humid environment (classical or environmental heatstroke), due to excessive voluntary strenuous physical exercise and/or prolonged uncontrolled muscle tremors or seizures (exertional heatstroke).4,36,51

Neurological abnormalities are invariably present in dogs with clinical heatstroke, including coma (40%), seizures (35%) and stupor (33%).30 Mild cases may show milder central nervous system (CNS) signs, such as disorientation or โ€˜delirium-likeโ€™ behavior. Extreme hyperthermia leads to cerebral hypoperfusion due to respiratory alkalosis and shock.72 This metabolic derangement is combined with the direct hyperthermic effects resulting in vascular damage, cerebral edema, hemorrhage and multifocal vascular thrombosis and infraction.72 Brain histopathology in fatal heatstroke cases in dogs has recorded cerebral edema, hemorrhage, hyperemia, and neuronal necrosis.34 The brain damage in heatstroke has been previously investigated in other mammals, including humans, and has been mainly attributed to a direct brain tissue thermal injury.73 Conversely, it has been shown that the canine brain has intrinsic thermal resistance, protecting it from direct thermal injury.72 It is therefore unlikely that direct thermal brain injury per se is the major factor in the pathogenesis of CNS lesions and abnormalities in dogs, although it might play a more minor part in the pathogenesis. The CNS abnormalities in dogs with heatstroke probably occur mostly secondary to shock and multi-organ dysfunction, including metabolic derangement, alkalosis or acidosis, hypoxia, hypoglycemia, bleeding and formation of microthrombi.34,72

So important to have qualified professionals looking after your pets!

Percy the dachshund has anxiety, heโ€™s very reactive and a bite risk canine.

his owners havenโ€™t been able to go on vacation until now.

Iโ€™m so pleased theyโ€™ve found me so they can go on holiday with ease.

Doing bite prevention, canine behaviour and psychology courses gives me the skills to confidently look after bite risk pets in their home making them feel comfortable and happy in their environment.

Go Percy for feeling brave enough to welcome me into his home to care for him ๐Ÿคฉ

And we canโ€™t forget the beautiful nervous kitties ๐Ÿˆโ€โฌ›

Heatstroke signs:

Panting, which increases as heatstroke progresses.
Drooling, salivating.
Agitation, restlessness.
Bright red tongue.
Very red or pale gums.
Increased heart rate.
Breathing distress.
Vomiting, diarrhoea (possibly with blood)

Your pets are more prone to heatstroke if:

Animals that are overweight
Flat faced breeds such as Pugs and French Bulldogs, or Persian cats
Pets with thick coats
Old or very young animals
Animals with pre-existing conditions, particularly airway, lung or heart problems

How to prevent:
Make sure your pet always has access to a cool shaded area, both indoors and outside
Restrict exercise on warm days (dogs should be walked early in the morning or later in the evening to avoid the hottest part of the day)
Pack a water bottle on walks
Remember, hot pavements can burn paws! If itโ€™s too hold your hand on, itโ€™s too hot for your pet to walk on
Never leave pets in a car or a hot room (eg conservatories)
Ensure your pet always has drinking water available, adding ice can help keep it cool
Ensure your pet is regularly groomed if this is advised for their breed

Heatstroke affected?
Take your pet somewhere cool, ideally a well ventilated area or use a fan
Offer them small sips of water (do not force them to drink)
Cold water immersion is an effective approach for young, healthy dogs
Evaporation method: Pouring water of any temperature that is cooler than your dog over them and combine with air movement from a breeze, fan, or air conditioning (evaporative cooling) for older dogs or dogs with underlying health problems.

if you cannot use the evaporation method, cool them down by pouring/hosing cool water on them. Itโ€™s important not to use ice-cold water as this can reduce blood flow to the skin, reducing their ability to cool down or even cause them to shiver, increasing heat generation.

Once youโ€™ve started these steps, call your vets who will be able to advise you further. Even if your pet seems to be ok itโ€™s important to have them checked (unless told otherwise), as the more serious signs of heatstroke may not be immediately apparent.

So proud of Brunoโ€™s progress!

This is Bruno engaging in a semi loose leash walk, on a street!

Iโ€™m expanding his socialising in new environments, Bruno is a powerful overexcited teenager whom struggles with stimuli of any kind.

Weโ€™ve been implementing structure, confidence and also working on his threshold to stimuli, a month ago I would never walk him on street or (high traffic area)

His owners are putting in so much work with Bruno and heโ€™s responding so well to training and itโ€™s definitely paying off! ๐Ÿคฉ

If you've ever had a dog that is reactive to other dogs, there's a real risk you're going to end up with the same problem from overcompensating....

๐Ÿคฏ Over socialisation to other dogs in an attempt to make your dog super friendly can backfire.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Over socisalisation to other dogs can create a dog that has such a high value for other dogs that it has little value in you and what you ask from the dog.

๐Ÿ‘‰ This can in turn create barrier/leash aggression as the frustration builds and plays out when the dog who has super high value for other dogs can't get to what they value.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Over socialisation can put your dog at risk of a bad experience with other dogs during a critical development period which can lead to fear based aggression.

If you and your dog have past trauma, working with a trainer with your new puppy can be a great way to set up some great positive experiences for your puppy as well as help your dog build value in you and not other things in their environment.

โœŒ๏ธThe term 'over socialisation' here is being used by way of a dog meeting/playing vs simply being in the same space without interaction. Dogs need to have lots of experiences with dogs in their environment where they feel safe, and balanced and where they learn/have learned to defer to their handler.

Choosing the right dog walker for your four-legged companion requires careful consideration. You want someone who not only enjoys spending time with dogs, but also follows high ethical standards. Here are the key factors you should consider ensuring that you're entrusting your canine friend to an ethical dog walker:

Understanding Your Dog's Unique Needs:

A considerate dog walker understands that every dog is an individual, with their own temperament, physical abilities, and personal comfort zones. They should be prepared to adapt their approach to suit your dog's specific needs, considering things like walking pace, distance, and any behavioural tendencies.

Considerate Group Sizes:

An ethical dog walker will limit the number of dogs they walk at the same time. This shows their commitment to offering each dog the attention and care they require, placing the welfare of the dogs above the potential to earn more by walking larger groups.

Commitment to Safety:

Look for a dog walker who prioritises safety. They should use suitable and secure equipment, such as robust leads and secure harnesses. Additionally, they should assure you that your dog will be safely fastened during transport and that they always follow road rules. The presence of a first aid kit is also a good indicator of their preparedness for emergencies.

Professionalism and Honesty:

A professional dog walker should maintain transparency with their clients. This means they're willing to discuss any incidents or issues that occur during the walk. They should also be clear about their services, fees, and any changes to schedules or plans.

Up-to-Date Canine Knowledge:

A responsible dog walker should keep updating their knowledge about dog behaviour, health concerns, breed-specific traits, and the latest developments in their field. This ongoing commitment to learning reflects their dedication to their profession and ability to provide optimal care for your dog.

By using these guidelines, you can find an ethical dog walker who not only provides a professional service but also genuinely cares for the well-being of your dog.
