I cannot stress the expensiveness of the matting of this poor Pommie’s coat! This poor kiddo, a Pomeranian named Astro, I squeezed into my books and I’m so incredibly glad I did. Poor guy had so much matting all over, especially his rear. His mama rescued him the day before and he was in some dire need of TLC. Feces matted in his bum and thorough matting all over his body, especially his rear and armpits.
Honestly this is a situation where we as groomers have to ask: to shave or not to shave? His coat was physically saveable with a lot of elbow grease, but the question of is it worth it?
In this particular instance: yes. A couple of factors play into that:
1- was the coat physically salvageable? Yes. He had extensive matting but it wasn’t pelted to a degree that I wasn’t able to work it out with the proper product and technique. Sometimes, when matting is intense enough, the process of dematting would cause so much coat damage anyway and cause enough skin irritation that the process wouldn’t even be worth it for the end result and the level of skin irritation it would cause. Luckily that wasn’t the case here.
2. The dog’s temperament. If a dog is stressed already, dematting can be a very traumatizing experience for a dog. Luckily, even though his whole world’s been turned upside down in the last 24 hours, Astro is an ANGEL. An absolute resilient little guy with a trooper’s heart. He was the sweetest mellowest guy for this whole process, start to finish. I was big proud of him for this.
3. Will they get in this condition again? If I have a dog with matting where I know pet parents won’t be able to maintain the coat and the dog will end up right back here again in the same condition, I’m more prone to decide to shave. For double coated breeds like Poms, we try to avoid that as much as possible. Groomer Outfit check❤️. Just because I work with dogs every day, doesn’t mean I can’t try and dress cute/like myself! I love to try and wear what feels like me and while I’m a little limited by what I can wear based on what fabric doesn’t trap hair inside my shirt, I still find plenty of options. Putting effort into what I wear at work gives me a little boost each day and I love it! If only it were safe to wear heels at the salon, but unfortunately I WOULD slip and die😂
All that being said I am human (and chronically ill) and do still often come to work in a t shirt and leggings. Hey, sometimes you just have to get through the day and that’s a win in and of itself! The ability to have flexibility in my job is always one of my favorite parts about it.

Bigger bird indeed Miss Wren😍! I love a bird themed dog name! Sounds very specific but my own pets are all named after Birds! It started with Penguin (my logo dog) and then followed with my cats Kiwi and Puffin, and my newest pup is named Saoirse which means freedom and her middle name is Starling, which is a bird.

Surprise! Penguin now has a retro style poodle moustache🥸. I was going to go back to a clean face, but took it as an opportunity to try something fun and different on my way there.
