Miss Skye dropped by for a visit and practiced hanging out in a crate. She thinks maybe crates aren’t so bad, especially when they come in cute colours!

Here in Winnipeg we have been getting A LOT of snow lately. Inclement weather presents a lot of struggle for many aspects of dog ownership. Less time outside, annoying dog boots, and cabin fever just to name a few. Training doesn’t have to fall to the wayside just because it’s blustery out there! DM me for details on how to sign up for personalized, online training!

Hello Friends! I hope your New Year has started out filled with love and paw prints! Ours certainly has! It ha been very cold here in Winnipeg so Twig and Pepper have been getting shorter walks, learning to love boots and sweaters, and doing LOTS of indoor mental stimulation. What are your pups favourite ways to fight off cabin fever?

Your dog can sleep on your bed.
🛏
There are lots of reasons to choose to share your bed with your dog or to not. Some people choose not to allow it for space or hygiene reasons. Makes sense! Some people choose to allow it because they like to cuddle with their pups. Very fair, pups are great snugglers!
🐕
Letting your dog sleep on your bed will not make your dog think they are “an alpha” and it will not cause obedience issues. Where your dog sleeps is a matter of comfort and convenience. It is not moral. In a crate, on a dog bed or on your pillow, what is important is that it works for you and your dog!

Dogs are not people and we expect them to suppress a lot of natural urges to fit into our homes and lives. Barking, digging, chewing, and chasing are all normal things for dogs to enjoy doing but it’s understandably maddening when they chew your shoes or bark at the mailman.

Engaging with these moments of outburst with compassion and trying to recognize that your dog isn’t trying to be bad is crucial for helping you and your dog build your relationship.

Next time your dog “misbehaves” try stepping back from that feeling of frustration and ask yourself why your dog is acting out. Is there a natural need that they have been suppressing for your comfort?

Meet Pepper!
Pepper is a busy lady and as one of two dogs in the household, training can be tricky. She and Twig are still getting to know each other and they tend to like to get in each others way when the treats come out. It’s only natural but it makes training tricky.

This is just one of the many reasons why I love crate training my dogs! Twig is in her own crate off camera while Pepper and I work on building a positive association.

The key to crates is working very VERY slow. You want to avoid making your dog feel trapped at first so don’t even touch the door until your dog will go in and stay in until released or called out.

Crate training is a safety tool and what I consider to be “Cooperative Care”. You should start crate training as early as possible so that your pup has the skill well before they need it.

Are you struggling with crate training? Let’s chat about it! Book a session by following the link tree in my bio and filling out my intake form or DM me for details!

Door Manners!! They are so SO important for safety, especially if you live on a busy street. Here is a brief glimpse into Twig and I practicing calmness at the door and waiting for a release cue before exiting.

Let’s talk about Drive. I’ve heard a lot of people get very confused about what Drive is in dogs.

As I understand it, Drive is a fundamental part of your dogs personality. It’s what interests them; what motivates them! This varies from dog to dog and from breed to breed. Some dogs might be interested in food or play while others might be more into chasing things.

Knowing what Drives your dog is a huge benefit to training them. If your dog is driven by toys or chasing things chances are high that treats on a walk will never make you “Sexier than a Squirrel”.

Once you understand what motivates your dog you will gain two major things
1. you will know what distractions will be the hardest for your dog to work through
2. You will have a clearer idea of what reward will be the most engaging to them
Not every dog will be motivates by treats or food and some dogs aren’t that into play or tugs on a walk and that’s okay. Knowing what works for your dog is the first step to building engagement!

First Post!! 🥳 This is my little sidekick Twig, she is a 4-5 year old mixed breed I adopted in late 2020 after the passing of my boxer, Bacon. Twig is such a character, she is so full of quirks and personality and you will likely be seeing a lot of her here.
