Luna, the Border/ACD mix is finishing up her time here with me and her transformation has been AMAZING. She came in high strung and insecure. She will be heading home on Monday with a ton of new confidence, skills, and manners. Her human sister Finley has missed her terribly and I'm sure Luna feels the same. I am SO proud of this young little dog.
From an uncontrollable wiggle butt, to chill and attentive. Archie nailed his go-home session pulling out all the stops. The real test will be maintaining his manners at home with his favorite little human. Transferring foundational skills is part of the process which means our follow up sessions are dedicated to those nuances that happen outside of the bubble of board & training.
Look who came for a post Board & Train visit!!! Brady is growing like a w**d and his mamma brought him in for his first of a few follow up sessions. He is a rockstar and I really enjoyed my snuggle time with Mr. Brady.

Slowing down to let your dog take in all the smells is a great way to ease into a new environment. Luna is a flighty young lady but this simple exercise was the perfect way to help her relax.

To those contemplating the rehoming of a pet, this is not intended to cause shame or guilt, but rather to encourage thoughtful consideration.
It is essential to recognize that there is no ideal home where individuals magically acquire more time or resources. Similarly, there is no farmer in need of an untrained dog, nor is there a rescue organization with unlimited resources and time to devote to every dog.
The reality is that many well-behaved and loving dogs languish in shelters and foster care for extended periods, sometimes exceeding a year, without receiving any adoption applications.
Before resorting to rehoming, it is crucial to exhaust all available options and make every effort to ensure a successful and fulfilling life for your pet. This may involve seeking professional training, exploring alternative care arrangements, or addressing any behavioral challenges.
Remember, rehoming should only be considered as a last resort, and every effort should be made to find a suitable and loving home for your pet.

Bed training with Riggins the Silver Field Lab means being on your toes. He’s SMART, but like most working line dogs his brain processes things extremely fast.
Riggins is learning all things manners and control and his people are not only learning how to help him settle but find fulfillment in his day to day life too.

It’s the weekend! Don’t forget to stop and enjoy the things around you. At only 9 weeks old, Thor is taking in the beauty and the smell of the roses at Lowe’s from the safety of his sling. It’s never too early to explore the world from a safe place.
Adventures with your dog may be just a few sessions away from reality. Brady is just 4 months old and is a master adventurer already.
When you find yourself down and out and alone, just know there is someone out there who will love you and will be there for you to walk with you through all the pain and troubles.
Gracie was found dumped near a local gas station and a sweet passerby decided to make sure she was safe. It took several weeks of coaxing and feeding for her to build a trusting relationship. Now she, along side her new mama, are learning how to do doggie things. We’ve been working together for a few weeks on settling into the home so that dad isn’t a threat plus some fun confidence building exercises. This week we added the dreaded leash to the equation (flight is a huge part of Gracie’s programming). Gracie is being trained using almost exclusively using positive reinforcement techniques (with the exception of a slip lead for safety and a side touch for redirection) so the process has many layers and will take time. Her human mama is 100% committed to this little girl and the transformation has been incredible.

Training is individualized and it takes a solid foundation and finesse to switch gears when necessary.

Echo and Delta are Giant Schnauzer siblings (different litters) and their owner has really been putting in the work with them.
These two ladies are providing great therapeutic support for some very lucky local clients.

Brody is a 4 month old Australian Cattle Dog. He is shy but busy. He has been learning so many valuable things during his private sessions and each day he’s growing in confidence and skill.

Oscar Moya from Elevated K9 is a very well known trainer and I really enjoyed his insight on his two Malinois and his Rottweiler. The protection world (sport or personal protection) is not for the faint of heart and should be taken very seriously. I do not work in this line of training, but I can direct you to people who do.

Teddy reminds me of Mokey from Fraggle Rock (yes I’m an 80’s girl). My dad and I would watch Fraggles together and it makes me smile to think that Teddy brings back those memories while we train.

Brady is just about 4 months old and his owner is in college. He is in training to be the best boy in public so that they can enjoy all that their coastal college town has to offer.
During feeding time I spot vacuum and mop the puppy area. Nim is not afraid of either, so it creates a great opportunity to exposure them to the puppies. So many dogs are upset by common household items and activities. Exposure to these things before the first fear period can significantly reduce the likelihood of a fearful response later on.
Sebastian went from wanting to know what EVERYONE else was doing to focused in public. He’s eager to learn and is a happy young guy. Distance down, place, & impulse control with these 2 goobers. Frederick is SO smart and I was able to free shape most of his behaviors. Bella has loads of foundations already built in from her owners but they opted to put her through bootcamp while away to help guide her busy personality in public and with greetings so that she could become a service dog.

My name is Heather Thomas and I have been working with and training dogs since I was 15. Anyone who knows me will say I am absolutely, positively, crazy, in LOVE with dogs! This love for dogs and helping others led me to take the leap and open the Long Dog Inn in the summer of 2019. What an amazing journey the past few months have been! I could not imagine the joy of caring for other’s dogs would bring to me and my family, but here I am living my best life.
What’s next? While I may not be in a place to provide training services full-time, I am fortunate to be surrounded by a wonderful dog training community that allows me to continue my training pursuits in hopes that someday that dream would become a reality. For now, I enjoy teaching new tricks and reinforcing obedience skills to my current clients while they stay with me.
