Meet Buddy 🐾
Buddy is an 11-year-old male Cockerpoo who presented as an emergency due to breathing difficulty to Camilla, one of the specialists in Internal medicine. Our imaging service performed CT which showed a pneumothorax (air in the chest) and a bulla in the left caudal lung lobe. The pneumothorax did not resolve after drainage. Lara, one of the soft tissue surgeons performed thoracic surgery to explore the cause of the leakage. The source of the leakage was confirmed to be from the lung bulla and the affected lung lobe was removed.
Lung bullae can be caused by trauma, inflammation, emphysema, bacterial infections, cancer, congenital abnormalities or can be idiopathic (no underlying cause). When the lung was analysed, there was no underlying cause which is great news.
Buddy's owner was extremely relieved when he was signed off at the last check-up appointment. His breathing has not been affected with removal of one lung lobe as he has 5 other lung lobes which will compensate. We are very pleased for Buddy and his owner that he has recovered so well after major surgery.
At Blaise we have specialists in multiple disciplines and complex cases like Buddy require a multi-disciplinary approach to obtain the best outcomes for our patients.
