SPEAK UP!

Much of the contemporary anti-animal research sentiment stems from a philosophical perspective known as "animal rights" which holds that animals, like people, have intrinsic legal and moral rights. This indicates that using animals as pets or for any other purpose, such as food, clothing, recreation, or research is unethical.

Whether or whether animals have "rights" is a matter of definition. Animals would have rights if they were given the "right" to continue to live. However, most ethicists do not use the term in such a broad sense. Animals are incapable of developing or belonging to societies capable of applying mutually recognized ethical standards to specific situations. Animals are not capable of forming or belonging to such societies. They cannot be granted rights in this light.
