Once upon a time, there lived a spirited Shih Tzu named Max, a three-year-old with a heart full of joy. One fateful day, Max found himself in the triage room, battling a sudden onset of vomiting, refusal to eat, and overwhelming lethargy. His worried owner watched as he vomited seven times, leading to urgent diagnostics that uncovered dehydration, low blood pressure, and low blood sugar levels. X-rays revealed an intestinal obstruction, and surgery became imperative.

The veterinarian promptly ordered IV fluid boluses of to stabilize Max. Despite these efforts, his blood pressure remained alarmingly low. With each attempt to administer more fluids, there was a glimmer of hope as his blood pressure finally showed a slight increase. Realizing this was the critical moment to proceed, the surgical team quickly prepared for Max’s abdominal surgery.

As the surgery room buzzed with activity, Max was sedated and all went smoothly. The surgeon soon discovered a linear intestinal obstruction. However, Max’s blood pressure began to plummet, necessitating a blood transfusion. With great care, blood was administered as the surgeon worked diligently to repair his gastrointestinal tract. A significant portion of the G.I. tract was removed, along with a surprising six-inch piece of chew rope toy that had caused the blockage.

After the surgery, Max was moved to the ICU, where he received IV fluids, antibiotics, stomach medications, and pain management. As I closed my eyes and took a deep breath, I couldn’t help but wonder about Max’s life at home. I envisioned a beautiful late spring day, the sun shining brightly, birds chirping cheerfully, and a gentle breeze kissing my skin, filled with the sweet scents of blooming flowers.
