Never thought i’d be this excited over a piece of plastic, but here we are haha. Here’s Luka utilizing our Klimb to work on positional changes while remaining in place 🐕
Both dogs need work with completing commands at a distance, and not creeping forward, so that’s one of our goals for the next few weeks..⚡️ @blue9petproducts #EssentialCanineTraining
We had planned to work on our exterior searches today, but we improvised with the rain and came to our local Home Depot to do some indoor Birch searches. She killed it for never having done searches here before ⚡️
Let’s talk about 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲.
Do you ever wonder why your dog is having a hard time picking up a new behavior/command/exercise? It’s easy as a dog owner to automatically blame the dog for not picking something up at a reasonable rate, but here’s a secret, most of the time, it’s US. I want you to really sit back and question your consistency before you question your dog’s learning ability.
Think to yourself: Are you communicating with your dog in a way that they understand? Do you let things “slide” sometimes? Are you marking the behavior in a timely manner? Are you consistent in marking the same exact behavior?
Dogs rely on us as their owners to be consistent and communicate in a way that they understand. Here’s a goal for this week: Think of one behavior you’re teaching your dog (heel, place, hand touch, etc) and pay attention to the way you’re marking the behavior, how consistent you’re being with that marker, and how clearly you’re asking your dog to repeat the same behavior. Filming your training session is a great way to look at things from an outside point of view! It’s amazing how we may not realize our inconsistency until we hyper focus on it 🙌🏼
Be consistent in your expectations.
Be clear in your communication.
Be patient, and as always, and most importantly, make it FUN 🥳

What is 𝐅𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠, and why is it so beneficial?
Free shaping is a type of training where you encourage your dog to offer a variety of behaviors, and mark/reinforce the behaviors that are gradually moving the dog closer to the end goal. It not only allows dogs to be creative in their own way, but free shaping also requires your dog to use his/her brain and problem solve! Instead of luring them and giving them guidance to the desired behavior, we are allowing them to freely offer behaviors and marking (clicking) the behaviors that are close to what we are asking!
Here in this video, we are working on a nose target that I will eventually translate into a nosework indicator. I’m using a rubber travel bowl as a target for my dogs to interact with. This is the second session of this behavior so i tried to challenge them a little bit to see if they’d offer me more duration. You’ll notice that Xena still requires a faster marker than Luka (although I do challenge her closer to the end). It’s always important to understand that all dogs learn/advance at different rates, so always focus on training the dog in front of you ✨
