🚩🚩🚩RED FLAGS WHEN PURCHASING🚩🚩🚩
I wrote this for my friends website and after seeing the increase in scams lately; I thought it prudent to share here as well.
IF ANYONE HAS ANY QUESTIONS OR CONCERNS ABOUT A CATTERY, FEEL FREE TO MESSAGE US REGARDLESS OF WHETHER YOU'RE WORKING WITH US.
*Not having a contract. ALL ethical breeders require a contract. This contract should have a return clause so that the puppy/dog/kitten/cat comes back to the breeder should the new family need to return them for any reason.
*Not allowing you to see the animal in a real time manner. By real time manner I mean by: FaceTime, Video Chat, In Person Visits, a live camera feed, etc. Essentially anything that will show you without a doubt that this puppy/dog/kitten/cat is alive and well in real time. Not all breeders allow in person visits. That in itself, is not a red flag. A lot of breeders operate out of their homes and they want their privacy and safety respected. There are also health concerns with live visits (parvo for example).
*Demanding payment without verification of anything or without a contract.
*Allowing breeding rights on any animal to anyone. Responsible breeders will limit the animals they allow to go with breeding rights and to whom can purchase them.
*Not doing any health testing OR not providing the health testing results they claim to have (ESPECIALLY THIS, AS THERE IS NO REASON TO NOT SHARE THE RESULTS UNLESS THEY ARE BAD OR NON-EXISTANT). They may redact certain information like an address or registration number for safety.
*Side note* Not all results are put onto the OFA website and a blank OFA does not automatically mean the tests have not been performed.
*Not answering reasonable questions that pertain to the animal you are purchasing. I say reasonable because over the years plenty of people have asked inappropriate questions that either had nothing to do with the animal in question or were personal in nature.
*Unclean/unsanitary conditions. I CANNOT stress this enough. If you consistently get videos and photos of unsanitary or unsafe conditions, do not purchase an animal from that breeder. Please keep in mind that puppies and kittens can and do make messes and get dirty. They will not always be spotless. There however is a HUGE difference between normal daily dirt and oils that accrue and a filthy animal. Dirty ears (mostly for kittens), dirty claw sheaths and claws (again mostly kittens), and matted fur (puppies and haired kittens) are all red flags for proper care. Again, kittens and puppies will play and they get dirty, but if that is all you see all the time; that is a problem.
*Too low of pricing. Raising kittens and puppies is VERY EXPENSIVE. We spend hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars doing this right. Most ethical responsible breeders do not make a lot of money. IF the pricing is far too low, it is either a scam (especially with Sphynx Kittens) or corners have been cut. There is the odd case where this doesn't apply but 9.9 times out of 10 it does.
*No vetting. If your animal (mostly puppies and kittens, as adult dogs may not need any vetting prior) has ZERO vet appointments prior to coming home, do not purchase from that breeder.
