Let’s talk Summer Safety!

As you all know, it is stated in my policies & procedures that if temps are too high or too low, we will do an impromptu puzzle day. Let’s talk about other summer safety precautions.

This wonderful infographic shows the importance to maintaining safety precautions throughout the summer months. This includes, but is not limited to: walking during the early morning hours, keeping pets away from unsafe plants/flowers, and being aware of your pet’s body temperature.

Did you know that during peak sun hours, the pavement that most pets walk on can skyrocket into a range that can become very dangerous? When the temp reaches 95 degrees, the pavement can be well over 150 degrees on the surface. At the same time, you must be cognizant of the temperature inside your vehicle when transporting pets to and from cooler walking areas. The temperature of leathered interior is one example of high surface temps in a vehicle. Always be sure to carry towels or blankets in your vehicle for safety!

Paw pad damage, heat stroke and heat exhaustion are all common occurrences when pets are walked on dangerously hot surfaces and in intense summer heat.

Heat Exhaustion Signs:
- Heavy Panting
- Weakness
- Disorientation
- Vomiting
- Short snout breeds and breeds with heavier coats are much more susceptible to heat exhaustion
Heat Stroke Signs:
- Heavy Panting
- Disorientation
- Diarrhea
- Seizures
Paw Pad Burn Prevention:
- Walk during early hours or as late as possible during the day
- Let dogs walk in grass
- Moisturize paw pads regularly – Mushers Secret is a great product for pet paw pads!
- Walking your pet on cement during their regular walks can also build up calluses that makes them stronger when dealing with paw pad safety.

In the end, if your walker tells you that it is too hot for a regular afternoon walk, please know they are looking out for the safety of your pets. Walking dogs in extreme heat can not only be danger, but it is also a major liability for your sitter and their business. Note, mental stimulation (puzzle toys, games, etc) can be just as fulfilling as a regular walk!
