APPLYING FOR A DOG:
Please keep in mind that there may be multiple applications for a single dog and that even if your phone interview and home check are successful, there is no guarantee that you will be matched with the dog you have applied for. APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS:
You must be 21 or older and must be able to meet the dog when it arrives to Vancouver, Seattle International Airport or at our pick up location in Langley. If the adoption does not work out, the expense to bring the dog back is also the responsibility of the adopter. FAMILIES WITH YOUNG CHILDREN:
Please note that with very few exceptions, it is our policy not to adopt any dog into a home with children younger than eight years old. Even if a dog has been tested with children, we cannot be 100% sure how the dog will react to all children in all circumstances. Therefore, for the safety of your children (and the dog) we will not process applications where there are children under the age of eight living in the home. We understand that this policy may frustrate some people, especially those who are very dog experienced and/or have children who are used to being around dogs but we hope you will appreciate our position. THE ADOPTION PROCESS:

STEP 1 – FILL OUT THE APPLICATION FORM
The first step in the application process is filling out the application form by clicking on the “Adopt” button on the dog’s web site profile. The application may seem rather long but the questions are all important in helping us determine the suitability of bringing an overseas rescue into your home. As a result, we recommend you take time to fill out each question fully and thoughtfully. If questions are not answered or an answer indicates that your home may not be suitable for one of our dogs, your application will be denied and a denial letter will be emailed to you. Please understand that denial is not necessarily a reflection on your ability to provide for a dog, just that we are not confident that a match would be successful for one of our dogs. Should your application be denied we suggest perhaps applying with a different rescue group or looking for a local dog that you can go and meet first. STEP 2 – COMPLETE THE PHONE INTERVIEW
The next step is a Phone Interview conducted by one of our volunteers at a time that is convenient for you both. Our volunteer will generally be in contact with you approximately three to five days after you submit your application. The purpose of the phone interview is to discuss answers on your application and ask any clarifying questions. We want to hear about your past dog experience, your lifestyle and what you are looking for in a dog. The average call takes about 15 minutes and will mostly be about you, not the dog you are applying for. Most of our volunteers are adopters themselves so the Phone Interview is also a great opportunity for you to chat about their adoption experience too! Upon completion, the volunteer will report back to the Adoption Team who will determine if your application qualifies to go to the next step. STEP 3 – COMPLETE THE HOME CHECK
Once the Phone Interview notes have been reviewed and approved, you will be contacted (generally within three to five days) with regards to setting up a time to do a Home Check. Home Checks are currently being done remotely by video chat, Skype, Whatsapp, etc. but will hopefully return to in-person visits once the Covid crisis has passed. The purpose of the Home Check is to ensure that your home is ready to accept a dog. Our dogs won’t care if the dishes are done or the laundry is folded and neither do we! Instead, we will be looking for things like possible escape areas and potential safety hazards. If we see any areas of concern we will discuss these with you so that changes can be made prior to the dog’s arrival. Upon completion, the volunteer will report back to one of our Adoption Facilitators who will determine if your application qualifies to go to the next step. STEP 4 – THE APPROVAL EMAIL/CALL
Assuming you have met all the requirements and it seems likely that an adoption would be successful, you should hear good news from our Adoption Team that your application has been approved! Approval notification is done via email within approximately three to five days of completing your home check. You will also be notified at that time whether a match has been made with the dog(s) you applied for OR if we feel that you would be better suited for a different dog. We will do our best to offer alternative suggestions whenever possible.

**Please keep in mind that there may be multiple applications for a single dog and that even if your Phone Interview and Home Check are successful, that is no guarantee that you will be matched with the dog you have applied for. LOCAL DOGS
If you have applied for a dog that is being fostered locally, once you have received the approval email, we will connect you directly with the foster family so that you can arrange to meet the dog. The meeting is typically done in a socially-distanced fashion at a mutually agreed upon location. It is possible that either you or the foster may request that additional meeting(s) take place before a final decision is made. Before taking the dog home you will be asked to complete and sign the adoption contract and send us the adoption fee by e-transfer. STEP 5 – SEND IN THE DEPOSIT
If you have been approved to adopt an overseas dog you will be asked to send a $150 CDN refundable deposit. The deposit is NOT refundable, if you decide to cancel the adoption after a Flight Volunteer has already been found. Flight Volunteers are extremely valuable and a lot of work goes into finding a willing passenger and booking the dog onto his or her ticket. This means it is extremely important that you let us know right away if your adoption plans change. STEP 6 – YOUR DOG GOES ONTO A FLIGHT WAIT LIST
Once the dog has been secured with your deposit, he or she goes onto a flight wait list. The shelter then works to find a traveler who is willing to add the dog & crate as ‘extra luggage’ onto their ticket. (There is no cost to the traveler to do this as the shelter covers all extra expenses.) Once a Flight Volunteer has been found, the dog is checked by a veterinarian who will ensure that the dog is healthy and that his or her shots are up to date. The vet will then approve the dog for flight and provide all medical documentation including their vaccination record. STEP 7 – RECEIVE YOUR DOG’S FLIGHT INFO
Once the dog’s flight has been booked you will receive an email with their flight information as well as specific instructions regarding where you need to park when you get to the airport, what time you need to be there and what you need to bring with you including a Martingale collar, 4-6’ leash, poo bags, food and water. You may also want to bring a few extra towels and blankets that you can keep in the car in case there are any messes to clean up. STEP 8 – PAY THE REMAINDER OF YOUR ADOPTION FEE
Once your dog arrives the remainder of the adoption fee is required
Please send the amount due by e-Transfer to [email protected]. You will also need to sign the Adoption Agreement and send it to [email protected]. After submitting both the remaining Adoption Fee and Adoption Agreement, the adoption is considered to be final. Please note: we are available if there are any issues with your new pup and will discuss options if the adoption will not work out. STEP 9 – MEET YOUR DOG! The wait is over and your dog is here! The dog’s paperwork including vaccination records will be handed over to you at pickup. NOTE: Our adoption fees do not include certain airport-related costs. If your dog is flying into Vancouver, you can expect to pay a $31.50 CAD Agricultural Inspection Fee in order for Canadian Customs to release your dog. There may also be a $20 CAD porter fee. If your dog is flying into Seattle, similar fees may apply. Please bring cash to the airport for these costs. If you dog is coming to Peace Arch park there is a duty required on the adoption fee but the other fees are not charged. If picking up a Peace Arch Park you may also be required to quarantine. CONGRATULATIONS! You are now on your way home with your newest family member! THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT STREET DOGS:

Street dogs have often never gone to the dentist. The majority of dogs will need to have their teeth cleaned upon adoption. This is at the expense of the adopter. Not all homes need a fenced yard, however, if a yard is partially fenced, you will be required to secure the yard. The breeds assigned to most dogs are educated guesses. We encourage you to do as much research as you can about the breed (if known) prior to applying. However, it is not recommended that you restrict your search for a specific type of dog, nor to put too much into what breed is identified for a dog. If you have to have a specific breed, we are not able to guarantee it. Keep in mind that the identified breed could be something different and don’t fall in love with an assumption. Dogs are vaccinated for rabies, parvo, distemper, and leptospirosis. Note that the dogs are vaccinated to the standards of the country of origin and for (CBSA) customs requirements, you may need to add booster shots to your furry friend, this is at your own cost. The rescue is not responsible for additional vet fees. Understanding that most dogs are not coming from a country that has the same standards of living for dogs as in Canada is important. Many dogs are living in a shelter and under less than ideal conditions. Most dogs eight months of age or older will have been spayed or neutered prior to their arrival to Canada. Exceptions are those for whom a health condition prevents them from safely undergoing surgery. Typically puppies younger than eight months cannot be spayed or neutered prior to their arrival. All adopted puppies MUST be spayed/neutered before the age of nine months. Confirmation that this has been done is mandatory for finalizing of the adoption. If adopting a puppy, the cost of the operation is at the expense of the new owner. REHOMING OR RETURNING A DOG:

Where an adopter wishes to return their pet, the dog MUST be returned to the rescue if the adoption does not work out. Adoption fees are non-refundable. Adopters who have returned their pets to us may not be permitted to adopt another animal from us in the future.

FOSTER found! 🙏🐶

This is Phillip, a handsome 2 year old boy weighing ~25 lbs. He is looking for a foster family while waiting for his FURever home. Please reach out us if you can help. His current fosters’ living situation has changed and he needs a new placement as soon as possible 🙏

Application link: https://www.wagtopia.com/search/pet?id=1875704&name=Philly+(Phillip)+-+LOCAL

Updates from Phillip’s current foster mom:

🔹 Phillip is a people lover! He’s a social butterfly, friendly with everyone he meets. He’s adorably affectionate too, he loves being petted and snuggled.

🔹 He is fully house trained and crate trained.

🔹 He is highly intelligent and treat-motivated. He makes training easy and enjoyable! He has mastered many commands since being with us (sit, wait, off, leave it, come, down, kennel).

🔹 His energy level is very well balanced, not too high and not too low. He enjoys activity time just as much as relaxation time.

🔹 Phillip loves to play! He likes nothing more than someone spending time playing with him, whether it's throwing or kicking a ball around, blowing bubbles so that he can chase them, running after a frisbee, or playing tug-a-war with his toys. If you're busy and can't play with him, he entertains himself with his own chew toys.

🔹 When visitors come over, Phillip knows to sit and lie down quietly, not jumping up or stealing food from guests.

🔹 He plays just fine with my 4 year old niece.

🔹 When out for walks, Phillip wants to play (very excitably!) with dogs and people alike. Imagine him as a child who wants to make friends, but doesn't quite know how. His exuberance can be off-putting as he doesn't fully understand social clues so he overcompensates. I always carry treats when I take Phillip for a walk. The treats re-direct his focus away from the "thing" that's getting him so excited, and back to me, the holder of yummy stuff. He WILL sit and focus on me.

🔹 He can live with other dogs, so long as the pecking order is established and observed. Since Phillip can be exuberant in his interactions with dogs (getting into their personal space), he might do best as an only dog.

🔹 Phillip can be “mouthy” when he plays. He responds to “no” when we correct him. He likes to put everything in his mouth so it’s best to keep lots of toys around.

🔹 He doesn’t have any experience with cats.

Halo is ready for ADOPTION and would LOVE to meet you in person! 🩷🐾 She is currently being fostered in Surrey.

Adoption application : https://www.wagtopia.com/search/pet?id=2063849&name=Halo+-+Local

Halo arrived to us on June 14th. She and her siblings were rescued as babies, when their mama was about to give birth on the streets of Guadalajara. Halo was very fortunate to be taken into the care of our rescue partners at birth, saving her from a life of homelessness.

Halo is now almost 1 year old and weighs 40 lbs. She’s a beautiful Labrador Retriever mix with a radiant personality to match! She is fully vaccinated, spayed, dewormed, and overall a healthy, happy girl.

Updates from Halo’s foster mom:

🩷 Halo is everything we love about puppies - playful, cheerful, and fun loving. She makes friends easily with both humans and doggies.

🩷 Although we don’t have kids in our home, we’re sure Halo would be just fine with children. With her sweet, friendly nature, we believe she’d love to have little human siblings.

🩷 Halo is very adaptable. She adjusted quickly to her new life in Canada and settled in easily with our four resident dogs. It’s as if she’s always been here!

🩷 Her energy level is well balanced. Although she loves to run and play like a typical pup, she also knows how to unwind. She naps like a champ and enjoys cuddle sessions with us on the couch. She also likes to chill out in her crate when she wants some quiet time.

🩷 Halo has picked up house training very quickly. She already knows that the yard is for potty time. She’s a very intelligent dog and will be a fast learner when it comes to training.

🩷 Halo loves her walks and she’s awesome on the leash. She looks back at us to check in while we walk and doesn’t have any reactivity at all when other dogs or people pass by.

🩷 She is not a vocal barker, in fact we’ve hardly heard her bark at all since she’s been with us.

🩷 She is not food aggressive. She eats side by side with my dogs and sometimes tries to help herself to their bowls too. 😆 She loves her food and treats!

🩷 We haven’t seen any prey drive with Halo. Even though she doesn’t have experience with cats, we believe she’d adapt well with proper introductions.

🩷 Like a typical pup, Halo likes to chew and she’s obsessed with stuffy toys! Keeping her busy with chew toys and stuffies is a great way to keep her entertained. She loves socks too, so beware if you leave your socks lying around! 😂 She even gets excited about the socks you’re wearing on your feet!

💛 UPDATE - Ben is adopted! 💛

AGE: 7 months

WEIGHT: ~ 15 lbs.

BREED: Dutch Smoushond Terrier mix

VETTING: Fully vaccinated. Neutered. Dewormed. SNAP 4Dx negative (Heartworm, Lyme disease, Ehrlichia, and Anaplasma). Distemper negative.

UPDATES FROM BEN’S FOSTER MOM:

- Ben is a typical cheerful, friendly, goofy puppy who has love for everyone and everything!

- He loves being outside, frolicking in the yard and playing with our other dogs.

- He is super personable and friendly with everyone he meets.

- Ben loves soft, fluffy spaces to snooze. Our bed is his favourite, nuzzling into the blankets.

- He is delighted when you give him affection. Cuddling, petting, cozying up on the couch, you name it!

- He's doing great with house training. We've been leaving the patio door open since the weather has been nice and he just takes himself to the yard to do his business. He is definitely a fast learner and we believe he will be easily trainable.

- Ben quickly and easily settled in with our 4 resident dogs. He has no problem making doggie friends and would be great with a fur sibling in his future home.

UPDATE - MAMBO IS ADOPTED! 🐶🐾

Mambo is a tiny little guy, approx 4 years old and weighs 6.5 lbs. He’s an adorable mix of Russian Toy terrier, miniature Dachshund and Chihuahua.

HISTORY: Mambo grew up with a family in Mexico but sadly his owners made the decision to surrender him due to financial hardship. Since January, Mambo has been in the care of our rescue partners in Guadalajara, living at their shelter.

PERSONALITY: Despite the sudden changes in his life, Mambo remains a happy, friendly, loving dog. He is sociable and gets along well with both adults & kids. He’s a total sucker for affection ... there's no such thing as too much time spent in your lap, according to Mambo! This little peanut will be your perfect lap dog. ❤️

DOGS: Mambo has been living with many other doggies at the shelter, all ages and sizes. He gets along great with his shelter mates and has not show any type of aggression or territorial behaviour. He would be just fine with a doggie sibling at his future home.

CATS: Mambo was recently introduced to a cat for the first time and did wonderfully! He let the kitty sniff him all over! No negative reaction whatsoever from our little Mambo. Video of their meeting available! 🐱

KIDS: Since Mambo is such a petite boy, we recommend kids age 8+.

TRAINING: Mambo was house trained at his previous home
before moving to the shelter. It shouldn't take him long to refresh this skill once he's back in a home environment. He is crate trained, comfortable walking on leash, and rides well in the car.

ENERGY: Mambo enjoys leisurely walks but is certainly not a high energy dog who would require heavy duty exercise.

VETTING:

✔️ Fully vaccinated.
✔️ Neutered.
✔️ Dewormed.
✔️ SNAP 4Dx negative (Heartworm, Lyme disease, Ehrlichia, and Anaplasma).
✔️ Distemper negative.
✔️ Flea/tick/heartworm prevention.
✔️ No known medical issues or injuries.

💜 ADOPT ME 💜

London is eagerly awaiting her FURever home. She is being fostered in Surrey and ready for meet-and-greets! Full bio and application link: https://www.wagtopia.com/search/pet?id=1916158&name=London+(Winona)+-+LOCAL

London is a sweet Labrador Retriever mix, 4½ years old, weighing approx 30 lbs.

London’s story is one of true resilience and courage. Despite all the struggles and hardships in her life, she is a shining light, radiating love and joy. She is a doggie that hasn’t let her past dull her spirit - in fact, she’s one of the happiest dogs around!

London comes from a life of homelessness on the streets of Mexico. Tragically, she lost her front leg after being attacked by a pack of aggressive dogs. She also suffered physical abuse causing a fracture in her lower jaw. After a year in the care of our rescue partners and veterinarians in Mexico, London made a full recovery, both physically and emotionally.

She flew to BC in February and adjusted quickly to her new life in Canada. Here are all the details about lovely London!

💜 PERSONALITY: Super friendly, wants to make friends with everyone she meets! She gets stopped all the time during her walks by people wanting to dote on her and she loves it! She is a sucker for affection, giving hugs and kisses, and cuddling up as close as she can get to her humans.

💜 ENERGY: Despite her missing limb, London is a playful, fun-loving girl. She enjoys daily walks, playing chase in the yard with her foster fur siblings, and wrestling with her stuffies. Although she loves activity time, she is not demanding of it and is just as happy to nap on her cozy armchair.

💜 DOGS: London gets along famously with the 4 resident dogs at her foster home. She quickly & easily became part of the pack. On walks, she is eager to sniff and investigate new dogs - sometimes a little too eager! In Mexico, she lived with tons of other dogs at the rescue shelter and got along great with all of them.

💜 CATS: She does not have any experience with cats.

💜 KIDS: London loves kids just as much as adults!

💜 HOUSE TRAINED: Yup, she is almost 100% there!

💜 LEASH SKILLS: Comfortable on leash, uses a harness for walks. She LOVES her daily walks.

💜 CRATE TRAINED: No, she has free roam in the house.

💜 SEPARATION ANXIETY: She’s totally fine when left home alone with the resident dogs.

💜 BARKING: Not excessive. She barks at her reflection in the mirror (super cute!) and barks initially when new people come in the house but very quickly settles and turns into a kissing machine!

💜 MOBILITY: Can go up/down short flights of stairs. Can jump on/off the couch with ease. Goes for moderate distance walks without any issues.

💜 MEDICAL HISTORY: Front left leg amputation a year ago. Lower jaw correction and 3 lower front teeth extracted due to damage from physical trauma.

💜 VETTING: ✔️ Fully vaccinated. ✔️ Spayed. ✔️ Dewormed. ✔️ SNAP 4Dx negative (Heartworm, Lyme disease, Ehrlichia, and Anaplasma). ✔️ Distemper negative. ✔️ Flea/tick/heartworm prevention.
