The red eft, the land-dwelling juvenile form of the eastern newt (Notophthalmus viridiscens) is a fascinating and brightly colored amphibian of eastern North America, and the population consists of at least four known subspecies. This bright coloration is aposematic, warning potential predators of the toxin they produce in their body.

Eastern newts have three life stages after hatching from eggs:
• The aquatic larval or tadpole stage, lasting roughly three months.
• The terrestrial eft stage, lasting about 2 to 3, or even 4 years.
• The aquatic adult stage.

The waxy monkey tree frog (Phyllomedusa sauvagii), is sometimes also referred to as a waxy monkey leaf frog. These arboreal specialists are native to Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay, and Brazil, in the hot, semi-arid region known as Gran Chaco, or Dry Chaco, in addition to more humid rainforests and montane forest habitats. The frogs utilize a “waxy” lipid secretion, which they wipe around their bodies carefully to ensure coverage, as this protects them from evaporative water loss. Resting on a perch during the day to further reduce evaporative loss, these frogs are active at night.

These frogs are popular as pets, and have been successfully maintained under human care for several decades. They are considered hardy, docile, and easy to care for amphibians with engaging personalities.

Red-eyed tree frogs (Agalychnis callidryas) will usually sit motionless during the day with their legs tucked tight to their bodies. This allows them to blend very well and remain hidden on green foliage. However, once their eyes open and their orange feet and blue sides are exposed, they are quite easy to spot.

This iconic arboreal frog is native to neotropical rainforests, ranging from northeastern Honduras through most of Central America, and into northern Colombia.
