hello, November.

Today we headed over to our friend’s farm to butcher our home raised chickens. Our friends provided the land + time + care for raising the chickens, while we provided the feed + all hands on deck for butchering day.

We ended the day with 54 birds, 25 for our winter freezer and the rest for their family.

Always thankful for like-minded friends and the willingness to work together to achieve our goals. I’m very much thankful for our friends who gave my kiddos’ the space to learn something new and also had the patience to teach me a new way of doing things 🧡 Thank you 🙏🏻

🌿 We didn’t set up at the market this year, because I totally failed at sprouting my tomatoes early in the year, and now the second batch - some of them are too small to offer at the market.

When I share, I want them to look AMAZiNG. No half-ass’n it around here, or providing mediocre plants.

I had a few tomato plants left over that I’ve shared with those who have reached out + repeat customers. The rest have made it into our garden and luckily last night we covered them for the low temps. Upon uncovering this morning, we are happy to announce they all survived and are looking beautiful.

Always learning from my mistakes + striving to do better. A total disappointment for the start of the market season, but I know what to do (or rather not do) next time around. and sorry to say we aren’t at the market this month.

This year, we put an electric fence around the rows and I can safely say that it has worked at keeping the animals from digging up the plants. Excited to see if we get enough fruits this summer to share & we will keep everyone posted.

Sometimes things work out and sometimes they don’t, but we’ll keep trying to grow 🍅 because it’s what we LOVE to do 🌿

Garlic is in the ground!

…and the rest of the herbs have been harvested 😌Putting most of the garden to rest - aside from the greens I’ll keep under cover for winter.

Excited to plan for next spring -and- to see these massive cloves grow!

Chocolate cherries has easily become my favorite this year! Highly prolific and absolutely stunning! This far into August she still has deep green foliage and has been resistant to the bugs and diseases that are plaguing + bothering the other plants. She is in a raised bed and I did not prune her at all. She has taken over and has become wild and I LOVE it!

Heirlooms from the garden 😌 Grown from seeds + absolutely the best flavored tomatoes!

The garden has given us troubles this year. In which brings new learnings and challenges to overcome; however, for these beauties alone are worth all of it! 😊

Happy Harvesting 🌻

I pulled some of the garlic from the garden beds last night to see how the bulbs are doing -and- they are lookin’ mighty good! 🧄

I will need to increase the amount we over winter this year -because- we just need more of this in our lives 😁

I forget the names of these 🤔 They are hard neck though, as we were able to get garlic scapes this year! 🧄

Sarah, doing her golden duty. Protecting the garden from the squirrels + other critters lurking around unseen 😁

We have had to replace several tomato plants this season due to the critters digging them up, chopping the tips off, or completely stepping all over them 😒 the Ohio storm from yesterday, thankfully, did not do any harm to our plants.

We have a total of 86 tomato plants in our urban garden. I’ll be adding a few more into pots today! We’ll be rounding up the tally to 90, we hope!

🍅🌻🥰 C A N 🍅 NOT 🍅 WAIT 🍅 for garden tomatoes, we’re very excited around here!☀️

Today is the LAST day for our heirloom tomato starts! We are out of most of the 31 varieties we grew this year BUT there are still some beauties left!

Thankfully, we had plenty of extras this year as the squirrels 🐿 have made me replace several of our tomato plants in our own garden 😒

If the squirrels (or other critters) 🐛 have already gotten ahold of your plants too - come on down, say hello, and add some more (or replace.. 🙄) tomato plants to your garden! 😅😄🍅🌿

Can it be Spring + Summer yet? We’re ready for all of the homegrown heirlooms ☺️💕🌻

We’re changing some things up this year, especially with being diligent with organizing our seeds + plants and slowing down. We are a family Urban Farm and as we grow our plants we have little hands helping us (our 3 kiddos’). No rushing here this year! We don’t want any plants becoming mixed up. We’re doing extra labeling to prevent against that and our quality + true plant identity is our top priority.

We’re already receiving requests for tomato plants and we will be offering them again this year at our local market.

We are limited to the amount we are able to grow because of our small growing area. We will do our best to have enough available at our local market this coming May. First come first serve. We will have a list available soon of the plants we are growing this year.

What has started as extra plants available is becoming more each year as we work toward our dream of having a ‘real homestead.’ We Thank everyone who has bought our plants in the past and who encourages us to continue each year!

This is my passion to grow beautiful plants and flowers for my family and yours. Thank you so much for the support and we look forward to seeing your smiling faces this Spring🌻 -Angela

Garden Update🌿

We harvested our first set of peas for the season!

Zucchini + Tomatoes are steadily beginning to form & we are reworking the trellising for the tomatoes to make them more stable, the string we started to use at the beginning of the season just isn’t cutting it & falling apart.

I seen the first female cucumber 🌼 on the heirloom cukes and I’m beyond excited to see them grow + take off this year ☺️

I’m seeing a lot of flowers on the peppers but no fruits yet.

We had a weekend of celebrations for our 2nd son who just turned #3 ✨ we took yesterday off and feasted with a brisket and delicious leafy greens from the garden!

I hope that wherever you are that you’re having a beautiful day & if you are in that you’re ENJOYING this amazing 🌞 sunny + hot day 🌻

First generation Dirt Apples’ growing on our near acre farm.

We didn’t grow up farming, nor did we have family who taught us the long lost ways of putting seed to dirt and reaping the bounty. We found our calling like many others, wanting to know where our food comes from and how we can learn to do it ourselves.

We call ourselves ‘Dirt Apples’ because we may not be the prime of the crops, or within this industry of having ancestral lands to grow, or bountiful vegetables for each reaping, but we can also bring something to the table.

No matter how big or small (we truly hope to stay small + local) we continue to be, we still want to keep our roots to the ground and stay true to ourselves. We’re more liken’ to be barefoot in the garden and traveling the backroads for the excellent herbs in hiding. Teaching our children to put their hands to dirt and learn along side ourselves as we preserve the want and need to run wildly free.

We have many plans for the future. We are currently selling our plants and produce at our local farm market, and 𝒎𝒂𝒚𝒃𝒆 one day have a spot of our own that’s beautiful and bigger than our near acre lot, but until that happens won’t you join us on this amazing ride? We’d love to meet you and learn from you as well 😏
