Let's stop demonising variation, but ALSO help create habits that are sustainable and MAKE SURE your dog's needs are met.

YOU CAN DO THIS and you deserve to work with someone kind to help you get there.

STRENGTH IS A CRITICAL PART OF PAIN MANAGEMENT.

Ziggy here is a beautiful case. He is a rescue and had behaviour problems from a young age, which was diagnosed eventually as likely resulting from pain related to a spinal fracture and protrusion - you can clearly see it on the first slide.

His amazing trainer Alice .au helped him in so many ways and he is able to even work as a stooge dog 🐕 these days - their relationship is just beautiful to watch.

After being released from a rehab program with ongoing exercises for management they started working with me on a general strength and conditioning program with some adaptations for Ziggy to help him go from management to thriving.

The difference is incredible!!

As Alice says - he used to get tight fascia and muscles with relatively limited work - which would show as twitching in his back - check out the pain story for an examples. With load management and slow but steady increases, he is super strong and you can see it in his behaviour and his posture - and no twitches!!

I’m so proud of them and so happy to see Ziggy with so much less pain.

His back and core and strong protecting his spine and regular movement and targeted exercises help to manage and prevent imbalances.

If your dog is in pain and you don’t have a fitness pro on your team, get one!

Seriously! I mean it. You wouldn't launch straight into a sprint without a warm-up - or maybe you would - but if so YOU are actively choosing to take that risk.

It might be an unpopular opinion, but YOU are in charge of your dog's welfare, and warming up (and the opportunity to move their body and mind) is part of that.

AND if you need help with a warm-up for work sports and play, I made you a present! You can check out the full blog and grab your FREE gift here:

The skeleton of the canine foot has over 30 bones!

In the rear feet (also known also as pelvic limbs due to proximity to the pelvis), the talus connects to the tibia and fibula, and together with the calcaneus and five smaller tarsal bones forms the hock (ankle), acting as a hinge and facilitates movement of that joint up and down.

The long bones below the joint are known as metatarsals. They connect the ankle and toes and interface with the ground. There are 4 metatarsals, consistent with other Canids (such as wolves and foxes).

Although all of the metatarsals bear some weight, the two central ("second" and "third") metatarsals are the primary weight bearing bones.

Sesamoid bones are essentially tendon anchors - they help align, protect, and relieve stress on tendons, as well as redirecting force, allowing muscles to apply more direct force to the part being moved. The total number of sesamoid bones varies slightly among breeds, although there are typically 8.

The phalanges are the toe bones and consist of three sets of articulated bones. The phalanges are the bones that support balance, stability and coordination, helping cope with uneven surfaces or unstable terrain, as well as extending and flexing toes to allow grip.

The ungual processes support the claws.
