Fun fact for all of you aspiring breeders out there! Babies need water too 😁 these little Poecilotheria Striata are about to molt which is the perfect time to give them a drink to help smooth the process. A fine mist on the webbing I find to work the best. Spray carefully though. Droplets too large can easily kill them.

Hello everyone! Happy holiday season from InVERTed Dreams! Now that Halloween has passed, it’s time for the annual Christmas post! Every year many animals are bought on an impulse and given as Christmas gifts, and every year many of those animals (while mostly given with good intentions) become victims of neglect or end up having to be rehomed, or otherwise put into a bad situation because the recipient was not prepared to take care of their new pet. Remember, when purchasing a new pet for yourself or someone else that there’s a lot of costs involved in caring for that animal properly. Heating, food, housing, vet care, enrichment, not to mention time spent on care, all of these things will continue to cost money and time over the animals lifetime. In conjunction with financial ability to care for, knowledge about the animal you are keeping is just as important to providing it what it needs to THRIVE rather than just survive in captivity. This knowledge should always be obtained before acquiring any animal through research or reaching out to a fellow hobbyist or breeder-something that cannot be done beforehand with a surprise Christmas gift.

Here’s a few things I always recommend people ask themselves before you buy an animal for you or someone else 😁

- can you afford to take the animal to an emergency vet if needed?

-can you afford to care for this animal for a minimum period of a few months if you were to lose your job or otherwise come into financial hardship?

- have you done your research on where it comes from, the climate there, what it eats, and common problems that may or may not arise with this particular animal?

-can you afford the upfront and maintenance cost of this animal and everything it needs throughout its lifetime without being put into financial hardship?

-do you have time or the desire to care for this animal now and until the end of its life or time with you? You may want it now, but are you going to still want it in a few months? (this is a big one)

Enjoy the holiday season everyone and thank you for an awesome year! 🤩

Interesting observation. I had a couple of bins in the building with a small population of grain mites and a couple with a handful of gnats. I chose to treat them with a variety of predatory mite species instead of any chemical treatments or mass cleanings. I have watched this colony of predatory mites move systematically through each enclosure, devouring any grain mites or gnat larvae they come into contact with, then they migrate to the enclosure next door when the food is gone. Not just the roach and pod bins, but they have moved through every single enclosure in the building. Spiders, snakes, scorpions, millipedes, geckos, pods, roaches, everything. The only negative effect that I have observed is that they will also consume smaller springtails. Each enclosure finished up with about 1/2 of the springtails it had when the mites first arrived. that being said, I’m willing to pay the price of a couple springtails for the quality of pest control these little mites provided! Definitely something to try if you’ve been curious.
