During these financially unstable times I’ve found myself pennie pinching a bit more, without doubt my biggest expense with regards to the birds is their French red millet, as part of their daily essentials I’d also give a spray of millet to each breeding cage and also a half spray in the box with the hens, now although one would never want to scrimp on a nutritional necessity we all know that the birds will devoure the millet spray pretty much prior to all other foods, with the exception of perhaps their soaked seed. To that end I decided to continue to give the half a millet spray in the nest boxes but to beef up their soaked seed in a less expensive fashion. Therefore I’ve started adding sweet corn to their soaked seed, this is really cheap when purchased frozen and added to a bowl with hot kettle water is ready in less than a minute in addition to this I’ve started adding the stripped seed from the red millet to the soaked seed mix, this means in essence I have cut down on the overeating of this rather expensive produce but it’s still in their diet, my rough calculations should mean I’m saving more than 60-70%. In addition to this as my birds take this soaked seed mix without exception it’s very easy to administer any additional additives. In addition to this I’ve also started to strip the sprays and sprout these too, this is a tad more of harder seed to sprout but well worth it when you see the chicks crops full of this, quite clearly a favourite of nursing parents.

Part three of three:
Cheap Toys;
This is just a bit of old drift wood I found on the beach, to ensure it was safe for my birds I firstly let it soak in clean hot water for 24hours then thoroughly rinsed before a further soak in Vanodine and hot water for 24 hours before allowing to dry and then placing in the oven for 2 hours to ensure all bacteria that may potentially be harmful to your birds was dead. Once ready I just hung from the roof of the aviary for my birds again another cheap stimulating toy to ensure your birds don’t get bored. As you can see from this video this young hen is particularly interested in the wood and is attempting to create a nest hole, further stimulating your flock in to breeding condition for the future season.

Part two of three:
Cheap toys; this colourful magic ball is a kids play toy I purchased from eBay, to make it safe I’ve cable tied it in the open position, as well as the toy it’s self being fun you can also hang treats for your birds within the toy as you can see I have done here for additional fun for your birds.

PART ONE OF THREE:
Cheap Toys;

Keeping your Budgies stimulated, especially the youngsters goes a long way to having a happy stud. However, some toys can be rather expensive, but this need not be the case, I use lots of things that are cheap and easy to find and usually only require a little bit of ingenuity to mate them in to a safe cheap alternative toy for your aviary.
In this video all I’ve used is old milk carton tops and cable ties, additionally the white rings are from my feeders also made in to a fun mobile to keep the Budgies amused, as some birds like to perch in a similar position within the aviary you can try moving them on a regular basis so that all your flock enjoy the benefits of these cheap toys.
Please see parts 2/3 for more cheap ideas on how to stimulate your birds without braking the bank.
